Silas, a 302-year-old zombie, runs a midnight counseling clinic and survives by absorbing people’s emotional scents. When anxious copywriter Madeline visits, her stress smells like spoiled sour yogurt, disgusting him. He helps her resolve work and life troubles little by little, and her anxious odor fades into warm sweet strawberry cake joy. Silas gradually falls for her and can no longer feed on her emotions. He even starts to develop a heartbeat, a living body temperature and human sensations, risking slow decay without emotional nourishment. After overcoming the fear of his undead identity, he chooses to stay with Madeline. She opens an all-night bakery, and Silas abandons his old zombie lifestyle, learning to live a genuine warm life alongside her.
