At the Christmas dinner, my husband's mother, Margaret, slammed a thick stack of hotel receipts into my face in front of the entire family.
"All of you—look! Look at what my son married!"
"Three years. Three hundred and twenty-four hotel stays. Every single one at the Ritz-Carlton, Suite 1204!"
I stood there holding the papers, and my first instinct was to look at my husband, Ethan.
Because that supplementary credit card—he'd been the one who borrowed it, said he needed it to entertain clients.
But he just sat there, face ashen, and didn't say a single word in my defense.
The next second, Margaret lunged at me and slapped me twice across the face. Then the whole family pressed in, forcing me to sign away every last piece of our joint property.
Three months later, I sank into a severe depression. I put a gun in my mouth and pulled the trigger.
It was only after I died that I learned the truth.
The one who'd actually been checking into that hotel room was my husband—with Lindsay, his first love and his coworker.
Margaret had known all along.
She just needed an excuse to throw me out without spending a cent, so that mistress—three months pregnant—could walk right in and take my place.
Then time rewound. I was back at the moment Margaret hurled those hotel records at me.
This time, I didn't cry. I didn't scramble to defend myself.
Instead, in front of everyone, I picked up my phone and dialed Lindsay's husband.
"I have all the hotel records for your wife and my husband right here. Would you like to come see them?"
The line went silent for two seconds. Then the man's voice came through, low and cold.
"Address."
I gave it to him.
"Wait for me."
The moment the call ended, the dining room went dead quiet.
Ethan was the first to react.
He shot to his feet and reached for my phone, his face twisted.
"Evelyn, have you lost your mind?"
I took a step back and gripped the phone tight.
"What—scared?"
Margaret sprang up.
"You have the nerve to sling mud at my son?!"
"Caught red-handed sleeping around, and now you want to drag my son down with you? What kind of vicious woman are you?!"
Chloe caught on then and yanked out her phone, aiming it at me.
"Evelyn, unbelievable. Evidence right in your face and you still won't own up."
"I'm recording all of this. I'm posting it on Facebook so every single person who knows you can see exactly what kind of woman you are!"
My chest went cold.
Before time rewound, it was videos exactly like that one that had made the rounds—reaching every person I knew. After that, wherever I went, I could hear people whispering. Even the retirement community where my mother lived had been buzzing with it.
This time, I didn't lunge for her phone.
I just stared at Ethan.
"Aren't you going to explain?"
"You know exactly whose hands that supplementary card was in."
Panic flickered through Ethan's eyes and was gone in an instant, replaced by that same wounded, long-suffering look.
"Evelyn, are you done?"
"After what you've done, you're going to make me spell it out in front of everyone?"
He pulled two documents out of his briefcase and slapped them on the dining table.
A divorce agreement. And a waiver of property rights.
I glanced down and my stomach dropped.
The house, the car, every dollar in every joint account—all of it went to Ethan. I got nothing.
And on top of that, the agreement stipulated I owed him a million dollars in "emotional damages."
I stared at that document, so clearly prepared well in advance, and suddenly I laughed.
"Very thorough."
"How long did you rehearse today's little performance?"
Margaret's hand flew and cracked across my face again.
"You have the gall to talk about *rehearsal*?!"
"You spent three years taking my son's money to sleep with other men, and now the evidence is right in front of you and you're still trying to talk your way out of it!"
The slap rang in my ears. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.
Chloe held up the agreement and the hotel records together and shouted at the relatives around the table.
"Robert, Diane, look at this! She used my brother's money to book over three hundred hotel rooms, and now that she's caught, she's trying to flip it on him!"
The relatives, who'd been watching like it was theater, changed their expressions all at once.
Diane sighed first. "Evelyn, honey, the most important thing in a marriage is fidelity. How could you do something like this?"
Patricia frowned. "Ethan hasn't treated you badly, has he? What exactly weren't you satisfied with?"
Vanessa piped up snidely, "No wonder there's still no baby after all these years of marriage. Her heart was never in this family to begin with."
Every word aimed straight at the softest places.
I clenched my fists and looked at Ethan.
"When you took that supplementary card, you told me you needed it to entertain clients."
"So what—now you entertain clients in hotel beds?"
The room went still.
Ethan's eyes turned to ice.
But before he could say anything, Margaret collapsed to the floor in a heap and began wailing, pounding her thigh.

"God in heaven! How did I end up with a lying whore for a daughter-in-law?!"
"Sleeps around and then dares slander my son! What kind of monster does something like this?!"
The moment Margaret started crying, Chloe rushed over to prop her up, cursing the whole way.
"Mom, don't work yourself up! This kind of trash just wants to drag my brother down so she can bury her own filth!"
"She's not stepping foot out that door until she signs!"
Then she grabbed my arm and started dragging me toward the table.
"Sign it!"
I wrenched free.
"I'm not signing."
"I didn't do it. Why would I admit to it?"
Chloe backhanded me across the face and grabbed a fistful of my hair.
My scalp burned. I stumbled and nearly knocked over a chair.
Ethan didn't move. He just stood there, watching me with a dark expression.
"Evelyn, we can end this the easy way. You sign, and we part civilly."
"If you keep this up, I'll call the police. I'll file for concealment of marital assets."
I almost laughed.
He was the one who had done wrong. And now he stood there like the long-suffering husband forced into a corner.
The relatives ate it up.
"Ethan's been more than fair."
"After all this, he's still willing to settle it privately. What more do you want?"
"Just sign it, Evelyn. Stop making a scene."
I knew—every word I said now would be wasted.
They didn't care about the truth. They just wanted to see me bow my head.
I reached out, grabbed the divorce agreement, and tore it clean in half with a sharp *rip*.
"You want me to walk out of here empty-handed so someone else can move in?"
"Dream on."
That was when the room really erupted.
"You dare tear it up?!" Margaret shrieked, lunging at me. She dug her nails into my arm. "You've slept with half the city and you still want to freeload off my family?!"
Chloe rushed in too, shoving down on my shoulders.
"Kneel!"
They yanked me off balance and my lower back slammed into the corner of the table. Pain flashed white behind my eyes.
But not one person in that room moved to stop them.
Then Margaret suddenly turned toward the open front door and started shouting into the hallway.
"Somebody! Come see! Everyone come look!"
"My son's wife has been caught cheating—won't admit it, and now she's *hitting* her husband's mother and sister!"
My stomach lurched.
Before time rewound, this was exactly how she'd summoned every neighbor on the floor.
Sure enough, within thirty seconds, doors began opening up and down the hallway. Heads peered out of doorways.
Some had their phones out, filming.
Others walked over, looking at me with disbelief.
"Oh my God, what happened?"
"She always seemed so quiet. Who would've guessed?"
The more people gathered, the harder Margaret sobbed.
"My son works himself to the bone, and *this* is what he brings home!"
"Plays the proper wife by day, spends his money on other men by night!"
Every accusation drew a chorus of agreement from the doorway.
"Disgusting woman."
"Throwing her out with nothing is still too good for her."
"Someone needs to put this online. She should never be able to show her face again."
The words landed in my chest like weights.
But I knew better than anyone—if I flinched now, they'd stomp me into the ground exactly the way they had before.

I forced my head up and looked at the crowd in the doorway.
"You're taking their word for it? Just like that?"
"Then why doesn't anyone ask why that supplementary card was in *his* possession? Why he had a divorce agreement drafted and printed and ready to go?"
The murmuring in the doorway paused, just for a moment.
But Ethan stepped in smoothly, sighing.
"Neighbors, I'm sorry you have to see this."
"I really didn't want any of this getting out. Yes, I borrowed the card a few times—but I never bothered checking the statements. Who could've imagined she'd use it for something like this?"
Every word airtight.
He admitted the card had passed through his hands, and in the same breath washed himself clean.
The people outside bought it, most of them.
"Ah, so that's how it went."
"A man wouldn't think to check up on his own wife."
"This woman's a real piece of work."
I was shaking with rage. Before I could speak, Margaret grabbed the wine glass off the table and hurled its contents into my face.
"Still trying to talk your way out of it?!"
The cold wine ran down my cheeks.
Before I could catch my breath, Chloe kicked me hard in the back of the knee.
I went down—hard. My knees cracked against the floor and pain drained the color from my face.
A ripple went through the doorway.
Not one person stepped forward.
Someone muttered, "Would it really kill her to just apologize? Why drag this out?"
I braced my hands to push myself up, but Chloe pressed down on my shoulder.
"Stay down!"
"You love your pretty face so much—well, let the whole building see just how much that face is worth now!"
Chloe grabbed the compensation waiver and shoved it in front of me.
"Sign!"
"One million. Not a penny less!"
I gritted my teeth.
"I don't accept this."
Margaret grabbed my hair and forced my head up, making me face the crowd at the door.
"Look at her! Still won't admit it!"
"A woman like this—if you don't teach her a lesson, she'll never learn what shame is!"
Voices from the crowd picked it up.
"Apologize in public!"
"Apologize to Margaret! Apologize to Ethan!"
"Woman like that deserves to be taught a lesson!"
Listening to it all, I almost wanted to laugh.
The same people who smiled and greeted me every day in the elevator, in the parking lot.
The instant they heard I'd "cheated," they were tripping over themselves to grind their heel into my face.
I lifted my head and looked at Ethan. My voice was cold.
"You really think if you just crush me tonight, all of this goes away?"
"That baby in Lindsay's belly—when exactly were you planning on bringing it home?"
The words dropped into the room like a stone into still water.
Everything froze.
Then something dark flashed through Ethan's eyes. He crossed to me in two strides and clamped his hand around my jaw.
"Evelyn, say one more word. I dare you."
His fingers dug in like he wanted to grind my bones to dust. Pain blurred my vision, but I still smiled up at him.
"What—afraid to let them hear the rest?"
"Afraid they'll find out the one who cheated was never me. It was you—"
The slap came before I finished.
My head snapped to the side. My lip split. Blood dripped onto my white blouse and mixed with the wine stains.
Even the neighbors in the doorway froze for a beat.
But Margaret snapped into action, wailing louder than before.
"Look at what you've driven my son to!"
"He loves you so much, and *you* pushed him to this!"
"Why don't you just go die?!"
The words drove into my chest like a needle of ice.
Before time rewound, on the night I put the gun in my mouth, that was the last thing she'd said to me on the phone.
Word for word.
I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, only cold remained.
"Don't worry."
"This time, the one who dies won't be me."
"You will."
