My ex-wife called me a 300-pound loser, smashed my hot dog cart, and threw me out. Broke and homeless, I spent my last six dollars feeding a little girl I'd rescued from kidnappers. The next morning, a convoy of luxury cars appeared outside my apartment. Her mother was Vittoria Bellandi—the city's most feared Mafia Donna. And now she wanted me to become her daughter's stepfather.

Chapter 1

My ex-wife said no woman would ever want a three-hundred-pound guy like me. The day we divorced, she smashed my hot dog cart to pieces. Broke and jobless, I was carrying everything I owned when I saw several gunmen shove a little girl into a van. I chased them for two blocks, grabbed a propane tank, and knocked all three men flat. The little girl curled up in my arms. She whispered, "Mister... I'm hungry." I spent my last six dollars on sausages and buns, and made her a hot dog to eat. The next morning, several luxury cars pulled up outside my apartment. They wanted me to become her stepdad. A woman in a wheelchair said calmly, "My daughter refuses to eat anything unless you make it. Name your price." I was walking down the street with my bags when I saw several men forcing a little girl into a van. "Help! I don't know them!" she screamed, struggling desperately. I dropped my bags and ran after them. The van had just started moving when I grabbed the door. It dragged me several yards before the driver swerved sharply, throwing me onto the roadside. Someone nearby was unloading propane tanks. I grabbed one, chased after the van, and smashed its window. The driver lost control and crashed into a guardrail. Three men climbed out, cursing. "You fat bastard! You got a death wish?" I flexed my wrists. My ex-wife always complained that I was fat and rough, nothing like a respectable gentleman. Well, she wasn't wrong. They opened fire. I dodged the bullets, swung the propane tank into one man's chest, and sent another flying into the van. Less than two minutes later, all three men were sprawled on the ground. I pulled open the van door. The little girl was huddled in a corner, trembling. I held out my hand. "It's okay. The bad guys are all down." She stared at me for a long moment before crawling over and clutching my sleeve. At the police station, every time she heard footsteps, she pressed against me and trembled. Then her stomach growled. "Mister... I'm hungry," she whispered. I checked my pockets. Six dollars. That was all I had left. I bought some sausages and buns, then borrowed the station kitchen to make her a hot dog. She stared at the hot dog without touching it. I gently patted her head. "Go ahead. I'm right here." Only then did she pick it up and start eating, taking one small bite after another. She didn't leave a single crumb. The officer contacted her family and told me I could leave. But the moment I stood up, her face went pale. She clung desperately to my leg. "Don't go..." I tried to reassure her. "Your mom will be here to pick you up soon." Her eyes filled with tears. "Will you come back?" I opened my mouth, but I couldn't bring myself to make a promise I might not be able to keep. So I forced myself to gently pry her hands off my leg. When I got back to my apartment, my landlord was waiting at the door. "Pay your rent by tomorrow, or get out!" The apartment was close to both my hot dog stand and the hospital. I sold hot dogs during the day and cared for my ex-wife's paralyzed mother at night. She'd only married me to get a free caregiver for her mother. Two weeks ago, her mother died. The moment she no longer needed me, she immediately kicked me out, and went straight back to her old flame. Now even my last six dollars were gone. The next morning, I was about to head out and look for odd jobs when several black luxury cars suddenly screeched to a stop right in front of me.

Chapter 2

A car door opened, and a butler-looking man helped a little girl out. The girl I'd rescued yesterday. When she saw me, she froze for a few seconds before pulling free of the butler's hand and running toward me. I crouched down. "Hey, sweetheart. Remember me?" Her eyes filled with tears, and she finally threw herself into my arms. "Mister..." I patted her back. "What are you doing here?" She buried her face in my shoulder and whispered, "Why didn't you come back?" I hadn't promised her I would. But looking into those hopeful, nervous eyes, I couldn't bring myself to explain. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I had something to take care of." She immediately clutched my shirt tighter. "Can you come with me now, please?" I looked at her helplessly. Sweetheart, I had no job, no money, and nowhere to sleep if I didn't find work soon. Just then, I heard the sound of a wheelchair rolling up behind her. A beautiful woman in a tailored suit sat in a wheelchair, her expression cold, a thin blanket covering her legs. The butler introduced her. "This is Miss Lily's mother, Ms. Vittoria Bellandi." Vittoria Bellandi. The most powerful Mafia Donna in the city. Anyone who crossed her vanished without a trace. Six months ago, a car bomb paralyzed her legs. She stopped in front of me. "You're the one who saved my daughter yesterday?" I nodded. "I just happened to be there." A bodyguard handed me a check. "That's your thank-you. Take it." One glance at all those zeroes, and I nearly choked on my own spit. I immediately waved my hands. "I can't accept this." Vittoria raised an eyebrow. "Not enough?" "No, that's not it." I pointed at the little girl. "I didn't save her for money." "Yesterday, I would've done the same for any child in her situation." Vittoria studied me for a few seconds before taking back the check. Suddenly, the little girl clutched her stomach. "Mommy, I'm hungry." The butler propped open a warmer. Fancy pastries, fruit I didn't recognize, the kind of breakfast that cost more than my rent. Lily took one look and immediately shrank back behind me. The butler coaxed her gently. "Miss Lily, please try to eat a little." She shook her head. "No." The butler grew anxious. "Miss Lily hasn't eaten anything since last night. We've tried several different chefs." Vittoria softened her voice. "Lily, sweetheart, please eat something." Lily's eyes reddened. She pressed against my back and whispered, "I want the hot dog. The one he made me." Everyone turned to look at me. I had the butler get some sausages and buns. Ten minutes later, a hot dog was served. Lily didn't touch it. She just looked up at me. I sat down beside her. "Go ahead. I'm not going anywhere." Only then did she lower her head and start eating, one small bite at a time. Vittoria's expression finally softened. "Something happened to Lily when she was three. She's been terrified of strangers ever since." "Yesterday's kidnapping brought back that trauma. Now you're the only person she'll go near." She paused. "Would you be willing to move into the Bellandi estate and take care of her until she's better?" "Name your price." Wait, wasn't that basically a live-in nanny? Free room and board, plus a salary? That was way better than working odd jobs! I nervously held up five fingers. "Would five thousand dollars a month be okay?" Vittoria replied without hesitation, "I'll give you fifty thousand." I shot to my feet, my mind made up. "Deal!"

Chapter 3

The Bellandi estate was ridiculously huge. It felt like we walked forever before the butler finally led me to Lily's room on the second floor. He opened the guest room next door. "Mr. Hayes, this will be your room." I stood in the doorway, stunned. Soft carpet. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Clean sheets that smelled like nothing. It was the most beautiful room I'd ever seen. That evening, I made Lily some mac and cheese and played with building blocks with her. Once she fell asleep, I went back to my room. In the middle of the night, screams jolted me awake. "Go away!" "Don't touch me! Help!" I rushed into Lily's room. She was curled up in the corner of her bed, drenched in cold sweat. She must have been having a nightmare. Whenever the servants tried to approach, she frantically waved her arms. "Bad guys! You're all bad guys!" The butler wheeled Vittoria into the room. Lily cried even harder. "Stay away!" I hurried to her bedside and gently pulled her into my arms. "Lily, it's me." She struggled at first, then wrapped her arms tightly around my neck and sobbed, "Mr. Hayes, they're trying to take me again..." "Don't be scared." I patted her back. "I already beat up the bad guys." "One punch each. And I smashed their van with a propane tank!" Lily sniffled. "Will they come back?" "If they do, I'll beat them up all over again." "Nobody touches you while I'm here." She finally calmed down, but her little hands still clung tightly to my shirt. I held her close and hummed a song the orphanage director had taught me when I was little. It took a long time before Lily finally fell asleep again. I quietly slipped out of her room. Vittoria was still waiting outside. She lowered her head, looking guilty. "When Lily was taken, I couldn't protect her. She blames me for it." I glanced at her motionless legs. "It's okay. Give her some time. She'll understand." She didn't answer. After a moment, she asked, "Who taught you to fight like that?" "No one." "I grew up in an orphanage. Always the biggest kid there." "The others loved to remind me. Until they found out big means hard to beat." Vittoria fell silent for a moment. "Didn't you go to school?" "For a few years." I smiled. "But I only made it to high school before I had to start working." "I don't have much education, and I'm no good at office work. All I can do is earn a living with my strength." "Honestly, I've always envied people who got to stay in school." Vittoria studied me for a moment but said nothing. The next morning, I came downstairs to find the living room covered in streamers. Lily wore a little bridal veil and held a bouquet of roses she'd picked from the garden. She nervously gripped the stems and asked, "Mr. Hayes..." "Will you marry my mommy?" I nearly missed a step. "Marry who?!"
