R&D had reached the final step, and they were critically short of the special refrigerated materials. The whole company was scrambling to help, but my wife bent the rules for her own reasons. She abandoned a truckload of materials and used the refrigerated truck to haul the bodies of her childhood sweetheart's parents, who had fallen to their deaths. "They died such a wrongful death. They came here so happy, just for a trip, and they slipped and fell and died. I have to bring them home to rest!" I tried everything to stop her, told her this was an accident, that there was no way to prevent it. And the whole company was waiting on this truckload of materials. She had to deliver it on time. She absolutely could not haul it across state lines and leak the company's core secrets. But she didn't care about any of it. She even used the baby in her belly to threaten me. "I'll tell you the truth. I'm pregnant. If you stop me, I'll abort the baby and divorce you!" I froze, my heart dead as ash, and watched her force her way through the checkpoint and drive off. Later, I didn't want her or the child, and I agreed to the divorce too. But then she was the one who regretted it…

She absolutely could not haul it across state lines and leak the company's core secrets. But she didn't care about any of it. She even used the baby in her belly to threaten me. Later, I didn't want her or the child, and I agreed to the divorce too. But then she was the one who regretted it… …… The rain came down in sheets. The black sky hung there like a bottomless pit, pouring without pause, without rest. Just like my mood, heavy and with nowhere to go. Everyone in the company was on edge. R&D had reached the last critical moment. Everything, all the work and research every single person had poured in, hinged on this final step. I couldn't imagine how furious they would be if they found out what Sharon Rodriguez had done. Tearing her apart wouldn't be enough. Not one person in this company would go along with her recklessness. I prayed with everything I had that Sharon wouldn't actually do this. Five minutes later, the materials truck she was driving rolled slowly toward me and stopped. She'd handed off the load. It had reached my checkpoint, and from here it was my responsibility. I rushed over like a madman and yanked the door open. But when I got it open, there was nothing inside. Just two bodies. "Where are the materials? Where are they?" I was frantic. Sharon, though, was perfectly calm. She even held out the materials form for me to sign. "I can't get the materials to you right now. They're still back at the last checkpoint. I'll find a driver to bring them over tomorrow." She glanced at the bodies in the refrigerated truck, her face set like she was ready to face anything. "Didn't I already tell you? I have to take George James's parents back home." "They died such a wrongful death. They came here so happy, just for a trip, and they slipped and fell and died. I have to bring them home to rest! Open the checkpoint, quick, and let my truck through." I honestly doubted I'd heard her right. "What?" The entire company was waiting on her materials, and she was throwing away everyone's hard work for these two bodies? And if this batch of materials didn't arrive today, R&D would very likely fail. Tens of millions in research costs, all down the drain. There was no way she could ever cover that. "Are you out of your mind, Sharon? This is serious. All those people are waiting on your materials, and you dumped them at the last checkpoint for two dead bodies?" "What do you mean, just two dead bodies? They're people too! And they're George's parents. Have you thought about how much pain George is in?" I hadn't. And I couldn't care less to. I knew Sharon and George were close, that they'd grown up together as childhood sweethearts, that they knew each other's families. Their bond ran deep, sure. But this was the worst possible moment. This was no time for her to let her feelings run the show. "Sharon, calm down. These people are already dead. They're already just two bodies, so what more can be done? But every living person in this company is waiting on your materials!" "If the materials don't get there now, R&D is one final, critical step away from finishing. If it fails, do you have any idea what you'll be on the hook for?" "Sharon, please don't do something rash. Get the bodies out now, send the truck to be decontaminated, and bring the materials over. I can cover for you a few more hours." I'd made it as serious as I could, so anxious I nearly bit through my own tongue several times. This whole thing was like a bomb that could go off anytime, anywhere, and every nerve in my head was pulled tight. I was terrified someone would find out, so I'd deliberately sent the others away, my mind racing through where I could possibly put these two bodies. But Sharon wasn't grateful in the slightest. She threw my hand off hard, more resolute than anything. "I don't care. Worst case, I pay up and go to prison!" She looked me dead in the eye, the warning in it unmistakable. "Preston Fisher, don't get in my way. I'm going to do this no matter what." "Sharon, listen to me…" "Stop talking! I'll tell you the truth. I'm pregnant. If you stop me, I'll abort the baby and divorce you!"

“What did you say?!” I was stunned all over again. Sharon and I had been married four years, and she'd always refused to have a child, quietly staying on birth control the whole time. I never imagined she'd end up pregnant at a moment like this. She knew perfectly well how much this child meant to me, that my whole family had been longing for it, and now she was using it as a threat. “I said I'm pregnant! Preston, I don't have time to play games with you. Open the checkpoint, let me through, and stop making this hard for me.” She pressed a hand to her stomach and pulled an ultrasound printout from her pocket to show me. “I was going to tell you, but all this got in the way. It's not too late to say it now. I'm almost three months along.” The date on the ultrasound was a week old. Back then R&D was still in progress; the core breakthrough only came in that final week. And at that point she could easily have brought the report to the company, requested to be excused from the rest of the project, and just rested until it was over. But she came anyway. She came for George. A week ago George's parents had come here on a trip and fallen to their deaths, and their bodies were still being held at the funeral home. George was away on business and couldn't get back, so he'd asked Sharon to go retrieve the bodies. And Sharon had done it without any regard for the fact that she was pregnant. Now she was turning that same pregnancy into a weapon against me. “Did you hear me? Preston, hurry, open the checkpoint! I'll be back soon. I'll haul the bodies over and turn right around. You just cover things here for me.” I shook my head. Something in me had already gone cold. “What's that supposed to mean? Preston, you won't help me?” I gave a cold laugh. The heartlessness on her face struck me as nothing but absurd. “Is our child just a bargaining chip to you?” “I don't care! Preston, will you stop making a scene? In the time you've spent on this, you could have just let me through.” “No.” My tone was firm. My mind was made up. “You can't pass without your materials. Management has a rule on this, and it strictly forbids any team member on the R&D project from crossing state lines. Your materials are still unaccounted for. I'm reporting this to the company right now.” Crack——— Before I could finish, Sharon slapped me hard across the face. “Preston! How can you be this cruel? It's not your parents who died, is it? That's why you can stand there and say something so cold.” “Or is this you settling a personal score on company time? You resent how close George and I have been? You've been jealous all along, and now you're using this moment to punish George and me? How small can you get?” The slap burned. And it burned me awake from the thing I'd been clinging to. So she'd known all along. For four years she'd stayed close to George, testing again and again how much I, her husband, would tolerate, and she had known exactly what she was doing. She simply hadn't cared, hadn't feared I'd ever turn on her, and had gone on testing that limit the whole time. I didn't want to endure it anymore. I hit the checkpoint lock and sealed the barrier shut for good. “Think whatever you want. I'm only doing my job. It's the rule.” “So you don't want your child anymore?!” Sharon hissed it low, the picture of someone in agony. “If you don't open this checkpoint and let me through, then like I said, I'll abort the baby and divorce you!” Divorce? I'd lost count of how many times she'd thrown that word out. Over four years of marriage it had stabbed me more times than I could count, until my heart bled. But now that it had gone cold, it didn't hurt anymore, didn't bleed anymore. I could take the word gladly. “Do as you like.” I answered flatly, and it sent her into a rage as she climbed into the car. “Fine! Preston, don't you dare regret this.” Without a thought for how I felt, she got in, flashed the headlights a few times, laid on the horn, and gunned it straight at the checkpoint. Bang——— A few violent crashes, and the barrier gave way. Sharon's car shuddered three times. After a pause of a few seconds, Sharon drove off without once looking back.

Watching her tear off through the barrier, I knew it wasn't only our marriage that had ended tonight. My child, I'm sorry. Your father couldn't bring you into this world the happy way you deserved. I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and pulled myself together to report it to the company. "Hello, this is the Cedar Tower checkpoint. Sharon Rodriguez, one of our materials couriers, has rammed a refrigerated truck through the barrier. She's carrying two bodies and heading toward the city. You have to stop her, before it leaks classified R&D material!" The company went quiet when they took my call. It took a few rounds of questions before they understood, and then they moved fast, mobilizing people at the next checkpoint to intercept her. To make sure the materials still reached their destination, I took another refrigerated truck and headed for the materials warehouse myself. I was determined to get them where they needed to go before the day was out. The whole drive I had the pedal down, racing, my head a tangle of thoughts I couldn't even name. Rain hammered against the windshield, blurring my vision over and over. Like the tears that wouldn't stop running somewhere inside me, bitter enough that I couldn't speak. Two hours later I finally reached the warehouse at the last checkpoint. But the warehouse manager told me Sharon had already collected all the materials. We pulled the security footage and traced her route in a hurry, and found that she'd stopped once along the way. So that was it. Just so she could take the refrigerated truck to finish her run, she'd signed out the materials and dumped them in some unattended warehouse with no refrigeration at all. Then she'd loaded the two bodies onto the truck and driven flat out to my checkpoint. She thought I'd wave her through, that I'd help her hide the whole thing. She'd even prepared her leverage on me in advance, already planning to use the baby to force my hand. Every insane thing she'd done, she'd done for George. She threw the whole company's hard-won research work to the wind, and threw her weight around because she was pregnant on top of it. I honestly didn't know whether she'd lost her mind. I forced down the rage and the collapse inside me, loaded the materials back onto the truck, and kept escorting them. I worked for more than six hours. It was already dark by the time I could stop and catch my breath. At least it wasn't too late. The materials were fed into the research process after all, and no serious damage was done. Thank God for that. I'd barely started to breathe when the phone in my pocket started buzzing without stopping. It was Sharon. She'd already sent me a flood of messages and called again and again, voice notes stacking up one on top of another, thirty seconds each. I didn't want to hear any of it. I knew she'd been stopped at the next checkpoint, that the bodies had been seized and never made it to George. She'd panicked. I hung up on her a few times. She just kept calling. In the end I picked up by accident. On the other end she was sobbing, breaking down, begging me for help. "Preston, Preston... come save me, my stomach hurts so much. Preston, something's wrong with the baby, I'm bleeding." She cried her way through it, then rounded on me and started cursing. "Was it you? Did you report me to the company and get me stopped? Why would you do this? Do you have any idea how upset George is? He cried! I've never seen him cry, and this time he cried." "Heh." I let out a scoff, feeling only that my tears were salty and coppery like blood. "Then go comfort him. George needs your comfort more than anyone right now. You can do what you always did, spend the night at his place, keep him company."

“What's that supposed to mean?” Sharon's voice went hard, still accusing me of being petty and snide. “Don't you know George's parents both died? You say something like this when he's at his lowest? Dragging up old grudges? Preston, are you even a man?” I couldn't be bothered to answer her. I stayed silent and moved to hang up. She realized I was about to end the call and screamed into the phone. “My stomach hurts so bad! Preston, I'm not lying, it hurts so bad……the baby's in danger, you have to come right now. Don't you want the baby anymore? This is the child you waited four years for!” She was crying like her heart was being torn out, shrieking and wailing, her sobs echoing through the whole room. She'd been detained at the next checkpoint. She wouldn't be released until the R&D was completely finished, and there'd be harsh punishment waiting for her. For now, basically no one was looking after her. I hardened my heart and told myself not to care. But one call after another came, begging for help, every voice message and text full of her wretched pleading. I couldn't bring myself to leave it. I still cared about the child, and I was afraid it might turn into something we couldn't take back. So I got in the car and drove through the night to the next checkpoint. Past midnight, a little after twelve, I finally got there. Before I'd even gone in, the moment I logged my report, my coworker on watch started ribbing me. “Preston, your wife's a real handful. She was crying her eyes out calling you, wasn't she? Gave us grief for hours too! And just now some guy came in looking for her.” “A guy?” My heart dropped. I already knew who. “Yeah, real anxious-looking, making a fuss about seeing your wife. And she was worked up too, carrying on like she'd kill herself if she couldn't see him, so we let him in.” “How long ago?” “Not long. Beat you here by ten minutes!” My coworker let me through too. I walked slowly toward the room where Sharon was being held, and sure enough, there was a man pressed up against the security bars. It was George. Dressed all in black, a mourning band on his arm. “Sharon! Where are my parents' bodies? Didn't you promise you'd get them shipped back for me? Now you don't even know where my parents' bodies went? How can you not pull off a single thing?!” “George, don't panic. I already tricked Preston into coming to help. When he gets here I'll have him go find your parents' bodies.” “If you couldn't handle it, you shouldn't have said yes! You'd make my parents suffer even in death? How can you be so vicious? If you can't do the job, don't put on a big front, okay? All you did was set me back.” George went wild with rage. He suddenly grabbed Sharon by the hair, yanked her to the window, slapped her hard across the face several times, then wrenched her by the collar and slammed her head against the bars, every inch a violent lunatic. The blows left Sharon dazed. It took her a long moment to come back to herself, blood at her nose and the corner of her mouth, and she stared at George in a stupor. “You hit me? George……I got locked up in here because of you, and now I'm facing serious punishment. I'm pregnant and still running all over the place, just to get your parents' bodies shipped back, and you actually hit me?” “So what if I hit you? You want me to pick a good day for it?” George spat on the window in his fury, his words crude. “Sharon, don't play the innocent little victim. You're the one who's married and still throwing yourself at me, wanting it both ways! You didn't get the job done, you made things worse, and a few slaps is letting you off easy!” He let go, gave a hard shove that knocked Sharon to the ground, and strode off. Sharon broke down sobbing, calling my phone again and again. I watched George get far away before I stepped out of the shadows and walked slowly toward her. Sharon looked up at me through her tears, her eyes red and streaked with blood. “Save me! Preston, save me and the baby.” Her voice came out weak, her gaze drifting downward. Her pants were soaked red, and a pool of blood had spread across the floor beneath her. “Preston! The baby……our baby……”
