Forced to Marry a Crippled Mafia Heir, I Made Him Don
My family abandoned me for twenty-five years, then dragged me home when their adopted daughter refused to marry Cassian Moretti, a crippled Mafia heir everyone thought was finished. They expected me to be a disposable substitute bride. They forgot one thing: I grew up at Blackthorn, treating criminals and mastering poisons. Then I discovered Cassian wasn't truly broken. Someone had been secretly poisoning him to keep him weak. My new husband and I were both brought into this marriage as pawns. Instead, we joined forces, destroyed the people controlling us, and put Cassian in the Don's chair. They chose the wrong couple to underestimate.

第1章
My family spent twenty-five years without me, then they found me in three days.
Not because they missed me.
Because the daughter they raised in my place refused to marry Cassian Moretti.
Once, Cassian was supposed to inherit one of the most powerful Mafia families in the country.
Now he walks with a cane, rarely appears in public, and everyone says he's finished.
Lillian didn't want a cripple.
So the Ashfords remembered they had another daughter.
Me.
Three days later, they dress me in black, bring me to the Moretti estate, and announce that I'll take her place.
The ballroom is packed with men in tailored suits, women covered in diamonds, and enough armed security to start a small war.
Lillian stands across the room surrounded by friends.
She looks exactly like a daughter who has never once had to wonder whether she belongs.
One of her friends lowers her voice.
"She really grew up at Blackthorn?"
Another laughs.
"That's what I heard."
"God. All those criminals coming in and out at night."
"Who knows what kind of men she lived with?"
A third woman glances at me.
"Poor Cassian."
They laugh.
"Don't say that. Elara didn't choose how she grew up," Lillian says.
She doesn't insult me herself.
She lets other people do it while she plays the saint.
I turn one of the dark wooden beads around my wrist.
Aldric gave me these beads seven years ago when I left Blackthorn.
Count them when you're angry, he'd said.
I'd asked why.
Because prison would be inconvenient.
He wasn't joking.
Neither was I.
I grew up inside Blackthorn, the private clinic every criminal family knows and no one admits visiting.
Gunshot wounds, knife injuries, overdoses and poisons.
People who need a doctor but can't afford police asking questions.
I learned enough medicine to keep people alive.
Poison was another matter.
Poison came naturally.
By seventeen, I could make compounds even Aldric needed time to identify.
He found that concerning.
I found it fascinating.
For the last seven years, the beads have worked.
People started calling me Saint Elara.
Aldric nearly choked when he heard.
"Elara."
I look up.
A blonde woman has stepped into my path.
Beatrice Hale.
Lillian's closest friend.
Her father handles enough Moretti-connected money that Beatrice seems to think criminal proximity is the same thing as power.
She looks me over.
"So you're the real Ashford daughter."
"So I've been told."
Her smile tightens.
"No one taught you how to dress for a Moretti event?"
I glance down at my black dress.
"I managed to put it on without assistance."
Someone behind her laughs.
Beatrice doesn't.
"You should be grateful, you know."
"For what?"
"The Ashfords taking you in after whatever kind of life you had before."
I stare at her.
"They gave birth to me."
"Blood doesn't make you family."
Behind her, Lillian murmurs, "Beatrice."
She still doesn't tell her to stop.
Beatrice steps closer.
"Everyone knows why you're here anyway."
I turn another bead.
"Lillian didn't want Cassian, so they found someone else to take him."
"A crippled Moretti and a girl raised in a clinic full of criminals."
"You two might actually suit each other."
I smile.
"Are you finished?"
She blinks.
"What?"
"Talking."
Something in my voice makes her hesitate.
Then Lillian speaks.
"Elara, she's only joking."
There it is.
Beatrice's smile returns.
She reaches for my wrist.
I move back.
"Don't."
"What? You think you're too good to be touched?"
She grabs me.
I twist away.
Her nail catches the cord around my wrist.
Every bead scatters across the marble floor.
One rolls beneath a table.
Another stops beside Beatrice's heel.
For seven years, those beads have helped me remember not to poison people when I'm angry.
Beatrice looks down.
Then laughs.
"Oh, relax. They're just beads."
I stare at my empty wrist.
Across the ballroom, a glass hits the floor.
I look up.
Julian Moretti is staring at me.
He looks terrified.
He remembers me.
第2章
Julian Moretti has looked better.
Seven years ago, for example.
Before he tried to force me into his car outside Blackthorn.
He'd been drunk.
Twenty-something and convinced the Moretti name meant no woman was allowed to tell him no.
I told him no anyway.
He grabbed my arm.
A few hours later, the itching started.
By morning, it had turned into nerve pain so bad he couldn't sleep.
By the second day, he'd scratched his own skin bloody.
The Moretti doctors couldn't identify the cause.
Neither could the specialists they quietly brought in.
On the third day, his family came to Blackthorn.
Aldric took one look at him and knew exactly who'd done it.
He made Julian apologize before I prepared the antidote.
Julian has kept his hands to himself ever since.
Now he looks from my face to my empty wrist.
Then to the beads scattered across the floor.
Smart man.
I bend down and pick up the first bead.
Beatrice folds her arms.
"You're seriously doing this now?"
I pick up another.
"You broke them."
"They're pieces of wood."
"Yes."
"Then buy another set."
"Are you finished?"
"Excuse me?"
"Talking."
I close my fingers around the beads.
"Are you finished?"
Lillian steps forward.
"Elara, don't make this into something bigger than it is."
I turn toward her.
"Do you agree with her?"
Her eyes widen.
"About what?"
"That I should be grateful your family finally remembered I exist."
"I never said that."
"No."
"You let other people say it."
Several people nearby go quiet.
"I've done nothing but try to welcome you."
"Have you?"
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because you look afraid."
That lands.
"Why would I be afraid of you?"
"You've spent twenty-five years with my name, my parents, my place in that family."
I step closer.
"And now I'm standing here."
Her eyes fill immediately.
"I never asked for any of this."
"No."
I smile.
"But you seem very attached to keeping it."
A sharp sound cuts through the silence.
Julian's hand tightens around his glass.
Everyone turns.
Sweat has appeared along his hairline.
Beatrice notices.
"Julian?"
He doesn't answer.
I decide to help.
"Julian."
His hand jerks.
The glass slips from his fingers.
It shatters against the marble.
Conversation across the ballroom dies.
Beatrice stares at him.
"Do you know her?"
Julian says nothing.
A deeper voice comes from behind him.
"What's going on?"
People move aside.
Don Vittorio Moretti stands at the center of the room.
He doesn't need to raise his voice.
Men who order killings for him go quiet without being asked.
Isabella Moretti stands beside him.
A few feet away is Adrian, the son everyone now expects to take Vittorio's chair one day.
Vittorio's eyes move from Julian's broken glass to me.
Then to Beatrice.
"Julian."
Julian wipes his palm against his suit.
"Nothing happened."
Vittorio looks unimpressed.
"Doesn't look like nothing."
Beatrice laughs nervously.
"We were only talking. Elara got upset because I accidentally broke her bracelet."
"Prayer beads," I correct.
She rolls her eyes.
Vittorio looks at Julian again.
"You know the Ashford girl?"
"No."
I almost laugh.
Julian was always terrible at lying.
I tilt my head.
He sees the movement.
His shoulders go rigid.
Vittorio notices.
"So you do know her."
Julian's mouth tightens.
"Julian."
The warning is clear.
Lillian is watching now.
So are Richard and Margaret Ashford.
Richard no longer looks embarrassed by me.
He looks confused.
Julian finally exhales.
"She's Blackthorn."
A man near the bar lowers his glass.
Someone behind Isabella stops whispering.
Vittorio's gaze sharpens.
"Blackthorn who?"
Julian looks at me.
He clearly hates what he's about to say.
"Elara."
Silence.
Then someone behind Lillian whispers,
"Elara from Blackthorn?"
Another voice answers.
"The toxicologist?"
Beatrice looks at me again.
This time, she isn't smiling.
I am.
Julian takes one step backward.
That makes me smile wider.
