On the day Dante Moretti proposed to me, he promised he would give me a real home.
I found out the truth on the second day after moving into the brownstone in Brooklyn.
Upstairs lived Clara Bellini, the woman he had grown up with.
Downstairs lived Vivian Hart, his first love.
Across the street lived Grace Malloy, the private secretary who had been with him for seven years.
All four properties had been bought by Dante with Moretti family money.
I went to the house steward and asked to check the resident records. The old steward looked at me hesitantly.
"Mrs. Moretti, you don't know about the private group?"
He handed me his phone.
The group was called: [The Moretti Family House].
Inside were Dante's men, our mutual friends, and the staff in charge of security and the brownstone.
Everyone was in it except me.
Clara was urging the steward to fix her fireplace.
Vivian was asking Dante which floor he would be having dinner on tonight.
Grace sent a photo.
In the photo, Dante was asleep on her leather sofa, covered with the wool blanket I had knitted for him by hand.
And last night, when I had just moved into the main house, Clara had deliberately reminded everyone in the group:
[The legal wife arrived today. Everyone behave for the next few days.]
A row of laughing faces followed.
One of Dante's men opened a betting pool.
[Taking bets. How long before she finds out?]
Someone bet three months.
Someone bet six.
In the end, Dante himself replied:
[Don't overestimate her. One key to the main house made her happy enough. Even if she finds out, it won't matter.]
I stared at that sentence for a long time.
So what he had given me was not a home.
It was humiliation.
I did not make a scene.
I did not confront him.
I only sent my lawyer a message.
"Draft a divorce agreement for me. The sooner, the better."
Then I booked a flight to Atlantic City.
New York had no home for me.
And it never would.
...
On the way to the airport, my lawyer messaged me.
[The divorce agreement can be ready tonight. Send me the major assets first.]
I took out the folder I had picked up from Dante's study.
Inside were four property deeds.
The third floor was under Clara's name. The first floor belonged to Vivian. The apartment across the street belonged to Grace.
Only the "marital home" I had moved into last night was still under Dante Moretti's name.
All four properties had been signed over on the day he proposed to me.
That night, he had told me he would never let me be without a home again.
My phone suddenly rang.
It was Dante.
"Where did you go? Why is no one at the main house?"
I asked, "Aren't you going to explain that Moretti Family House group to me?"
"You know?"
He was silent for a moment, then said, "They've been with me for so many years. They don't have a title, so they deserve some security."
"You are my wife. What's the difference between my house and yours?"
I tightened my grip on the deeds.
"So because they don't have a title, they all get houses of their own?"
He sounded impatient.
"It's just property. If you like it so much, I'll transfer one to your name later."
"No need."
I looked out the window as the streets of Brooklyn grew farther away.
"Dante, let's get divorced."
The other end of the line went quiet.
"Over a few properties? Is it really that serious?"
I did not explain further. I hung up.
In the departure hall, I opened the group records the steward had forwarded to me.
The chat history was long.
I kept scrolling upward until a video from three years ago stopped on the screen.
The date of the video was the day Dante proposed to me.
In the video, Clara, Vivian, and Grace were sitting in the living room of what was now the main house.
Each of them held a new house key.
One last key lay on the walnut coffee table.
Someone laughed off camera and asked, "Who's the fourth key for?"
Dante picked it up.
"For her."
Clara laughed.
"You're really putting all four of us on the same street? What happens if we run into each other?"
Dante tossed the key back onto the table.
"She won't find out."
The room burst into laughter.
At the end of the video, Dante stood and adjusted the collar of his suit.
Someone asked where he was going.
He took a ring box out of his pocket.
"To propose."
The video ended there.
I sat in the departure hall for a long time without moving.
That night, he had come to me with that ring.
He had gone down on one knee and said he would give me a home.
But before he ever said those words, my place had already been arranged alongside three other women.
The boarding announcement sounded, and Dante sent another message.
[Go clear your head for a few days. We'll talk when you come back.]
I sent the property deeds, the group screenshots, and the video to my lawyer.
[Keep all of it as evidence.]
Then I turned off location sharing and blocked Dante.
Your family house can go on without me.

My plane landed in Atlantic City. As soon as I turned on my phone, I received a call from the manager of an Italian restaurant.
"Mrs. Moretti, tomorrow's housewarming dinner has been moved to Miss Bellini's place, correct?"
I had booked that dinner half a month ago.
On the confirmation form, [Dante and Elena's New Home Dinner] had already been changed to [Clara's New Home Party].
The guests and the menu had not changed at all.
"Who changed it?"
"Mr. Moretti."
I canceled the reservation and got the deposit back.
Less than two minutes later, Dante called.
"You canceled the dinner?"
"That was my housewarming dinner."
He paused.
"I had someone check. You ran off to Atlantic City. Clara happened to move some new furniture in, so what's the difference if she uses it?"
"The name was changed, but the menu and guests stayed the same."
I raised my voice.
"That was the first time I was inviting my friends to our home."
He sounded helpless.
"It's all in the Moretti family neighborhood. Which floor isn't home? Come back, and I'll make it up to you."
I hung up and told my friends the dinner was canceled.
Not long after, the interior designer updated her social account.
The layout in the photos was painfully familiar. It was Dante's family house.
The caption read:
[Miss Bellini's residence completed according to the original plan. Thank you, Mr. Moretti, for confirming every detail.]
I opened the photos.
On one design drawing, several familiar lines stood out clearly.
[Plant roses on the terrace.]
[Adopt a cat after moving in.]
[Go to the neighborhood market together on weekends.]
[If we have a child one day, save the south-facing room.]
Six years ago, when Dante and I were living in a cheap apartment in Queens, we had written that life plan together.
In the final inspection photos, the flower boxes, the cat tree, and the south-facing room had all been completed.
The life he promised to build with me six years ago had now landed first in Clara's home.
I had just closed the files when the hotel front desk called.
"Ms. Rossi, Mr. Moretti extended your room for fifteen more days and upgraded you to an ocean-view suite."
Soon, a staff member brought up a new room card and a breakfast order.
Warm milk.
Oatmeal without cinnamon.
Delivered to the room every morning at ten.
All of them were my habits.
Dante's messages came right after.
[Didn't you always want to go to Atlantic City? Since you're there, stay a few more days.]
[Don't sleep until the afternoon and go out on an empty stomach. Your stomach can't handle it.]
[I'll come pick you up in fifteen days after I finish the family business.]
We had been married for three years, and he had always remembered these little things.
I stared at the breakfast order. Then a bank notification suddenly popped up.
[Family Travel Fund expense: $12,000.]
We had opened that account six years ago.
Back then, my salary was low, and I deposited three hundred dollars into it every month.
Later, after Dante took over the family dock business, I wanted to close it.
He said, "Keep it. From now on, I'll take you somewhere every year."
I opened the statement.
The recipient was a travel company.
The itinerary lasted fifteen days.
Four names were listed together:
Dante.
Clara.
Vivian.
Grace.
The day after tomorrow, they would fly to Miami, then go to New Orleans, and finally Chicago.
So when he said he would pick me up after finishing family business, he meant after traveling with them.
I kept scrolling.
This route was also the one Dante and I had planned together six years ago.
Back then, he said we would go when we had money.
Later, he said we would go after we got married.
After we married, he told me to wait until the main house was ready.
Last month, when we moved, he even packed the travel booklet into his suitcase.
"Once we're settled, we'll go."
Now, not a single stop on that route was missing.
Only my name was missing from the list of travelers.
I sent everything to my lawyer, then called the front desk and canceled the hotel extension.
"Anything Mr. Moretti prepared for me does not need to be delivered. Please dispose of it."
That afternoon, I received an offer from a private seaside club in Atlantic City.
I replied: [I can start tomorrow.]
第3章
On the afternoon of my second day at work, I was checking the schedule for a private booking at the seaside club when Dante's voice suddenly came from behind me.
"What are you doing here?"
I turned around and froze.
I had not expected the person who booked the entire seaside terrace tonight to be him.
Clara was holding his arm. Vivian and Grace followed behind them.
Dante's gaze fell on the work badge on my chest.
"You found a job in Atlantic City?"
"It has nothing to do with you."
Clara smiled and waved her phone.
"Good thing I suddenly wanted to come to Atlantic City last night. Otherwise, I wouldn't have seen my dear sister-in-law."
Vivian looked at Dante.
"She said she wanted to celebrate her birthday by the sea, and he changed all the flights and hotels after that."
Clara's eyes curved with satisfaction.
"He spoils me. What can I do?"
I lowered my head and looked at the event schedule.
The entire seaside terrace was booked until midnight.
[Cost: $110,000.]
Three years ago, I had asked Dante if we could book a night there, just the two of us, to watch the sunset.
He looked at the quote and said only:
"There's no need to spend that much just to see a sunset."
Dante had already walked up to me.
"So now you've even chased our itinerary to your workplace?"
"When I came to Atlantic City, you hadn't changed your route yet."
He gave a low laugh.
"Enough with the excuses."
"You asked for a divorce, turned off your location, changed jobs."
"After all this trouble, weren't you just trying to make me come find you?"
I closed the schedule.
"Dante, you are overthinking."
"Fine. I'm overthinking."
He nodded.
"You just happened to come to Atlantic City, and you just happened to work at the club we were coming to."
After listening for a while, Clara suddenly handed the birthday schedule to me.
"Since my sister-in-law works here, let her take care of me."
I did not take it.
"The club has assigned other staff."
Dante took the schedule and shoved it into my hand.
"You are careful with details. I trust you with this."
I looked up at him.
"I'm here to work, not to comfort her for you."
His brows tightened.
"If the client specifically asks for you to handle the event, what's the problem?"
"Stop making everything about us."
I gripped the schedule and went to the venue.
After dark, the birthday party officially began.
I was about to leave the event area when Dante stopped me from behind.
"How long are you going to keep this up?"
I turned back.
"The divorce agreement is already with my lawyer."
He was silent for a moment.
"When we fought before, you said you wanted to break up too."
"This time it's divorce."
I looked at him.
"Keep telling yourself whatever you want."
He reached out to pull me.
"If you could really bear to leave, you wouldn't have shown up here."
I avoided his hand.
"Atlantic City isn't your territory."
His face darkened.
In the distance, Clara called out to him.
"Dante, the fireworks are starting."
He looked at me for a few seconds, then turned and walked toward her.
At eight o'clock that night, Clara's name lit up over the ocean.
After the fireworks ended, the servers brought out the birthday cake.
After Clara blew out the candles, Vivian asked with a smile, "What did you wish for this year?"
Clara opened her eyes and looked only at Dante.
"This year, I don't want anything else."
"I already have the house, the trip, and the birthday."
She paused.
"Dante, I want a title."
The area fell silent.
Dante frowned and was about to speak.
But Clara took a medical report from her handbag and placed it in front of him.
"You will grant this wish."
"I'm pregnant."
