On the day of my prenatal checkup, a strange woman burst into my private VIP clinic. Before anyone could react, she unscrewed a bottle of sulfuric acid and splashed it directly onto my pregnant belly. "Carrying another man's bastard? Aren't you afraid of burning in hell, you cheap whore?" She sneered, throwing the empty bottle hard against my chest, her laugh dripping with pure madness. An agonizing, white-hot burn consumed my flesh instantly. I screamed, collapsing onto the cold floor. But she didn't stop. She crouched down, grabbing my hair with brutal force. "A side chick trying to use a baby to climb the social ladder?" "Do you honestly think you're worthy of being Mrs. Vance?" My skin was melting, fusing with the fabric of my dress. Blood mixed with amniotic fluid began to pool beneath me. In that horrific moment, the ugly truth finally hit me. The husband I had loved for seven years, the man I had been married to for three, actually had a mistress on the side. And the psycho standing over me was her. "What? Not happy?" She stomped her heel onto my hand, her smug smile widening. "Let me tell you something. Even if you die here today, Ethan won't do a damn thing to me!" Trembling, I managed to slide my phone out and dialed my brother's number. "Christian, come to Central Hospital. Now." Looking up at her arrogant face, my voice was terrifyingly calm. "The Vance family has no reason to exist anymore." A second of heavy silence stretched over the line. "Okay." My brother's cold voice replied, "Then we make them vanish." I watched my unborn baby die inside me. Just minutes ago, that strong, steady heartbeat was still thumping on the monitor. "The fetal heartbeat... it's gone," the doctor's voice shook. The rapid blood loss made my vision blur. But the excruciating pain in my lower abdomen kept dragging me back to agonizing consciousness. An icy rage made my entire body shiver. I bit my lip hard, staring at Hailey Miller. I had heard rumors about Ethan keeping a woman on the side, but I wanted to trust him. I wanted to give him a chance. But his mistress didn't give me one. She didn't even spare my baby. Ethan was practically sterile. He of all people should have known what this miracle baby meant. But now, my baby was dead. And the killer was standing right in front of me. "Hailey Miller, right? Does Ethan know you did this?" I stared at her, my eyes bloodshot and hollow. "Didn't he tell you that if you lay a hand on me, the Sterling family will take it back in blood?" The VIP room fell dead silent. Then, a piercing laugh erupted from her. "Since when do side chicks act so tough?" "You didn't seriously think that just because Ethan wanted a baby and you got pregnant, you could secure your place, did you?" Her sharp mockery pounded against my brain over and over. Hailey sneered, raising her eyebrows as she looked down at me like I was dirt. "The Sterling family? In Chicago, the only name that matters is Vance." "Ethan could barely have kids. Who knows whose bastard is in your stomach!" "As the real Mrs. Vance, it's my duty to clean up his trash!" Mrs. Vance. She kept calling herself Mrs. Vance. If she was Mrs. Vance, then who the hell was I? I looked down at my stomach. Where the acid had hit, my clothes were fused to my skin. The burning pain came in waves, sharper each time. When I fell earlier, I hit my belly, and the cramps were getting worse. Blood was pooling beneath me. The nurse turned pale and shouted, "Ms. Sterling, you can't move!" Suppressing the pain, I looked at the medical staff for help. But before they could take a step, the bodyguards behind Hailey blocked them. "Ms. Miller said no one is allowed near her." The nurse's face went white with anger. "This is a hospital! The patient's life is in danger. You can't block medical treatment!" Hailey completely ignored her. I stared at Hailey. "I'll say this one last time. I am the heir of the Sterling family. While I still have some mercy left, run..." "What fucking Sterling family!" Hailey snapped instantly. She raised her foot and kicked my stomach hard with the sharp tip of her stiletto. "Chicago belongs to the Vances! I am Mrs. Vance. What the hell are you to raise your voice at me?" A blunt, agonizing pain tore through me. Blood mixed with amniotic fluid began to leak out. If this dragged on, I was going to die here. I let out a bitter laugh. Ethan had catered to my every whim for eight months just for this baby. And yet, because of his baby and his mistress, I was on the verge of death. "Get Ethan here. Right. Now." Too exhausted to argue with Hailey, my voice turned cold. "Otherwise, if anything happens to me today, he'll be the first one to kill you." "And then, he'll burn with you!" Hailey burst into hysterical, mocking laughter. After a moment, she wiped a tear of laughter from her eye. "Who do you think you are? Ordering my husband to crawl to the hospital?" The moment she finished speaking, she stomped her heel onto my hand. She ground her heel down with vicious force. The excruciating pain felt like it was ripping my heart apart. My screams and Hailey's crazed laughter echoed throughout the room. Just then, chaotic footsteps rushed down the hallway. A familiar figure sprinted in. Suddenly, a sense of relief washed over me. I held my wound, staring into Hailey's eyes, and whispered word by word: "Remember this. Chicago belongs to the Sterlings." "My brother is here. Are you ready to die?""Elena!" My brother, Christian Sterling, roared as he rushed toward me. On his way, he had already ripped off his custom designer suit jacket and threw it over my body. He pulled me into a tight embrace with one arm, while his other hand desperately pressed down on my bleeding abdomen. His familiar warmth brought me instant comfort. "Christian is here. Don't be afraid." His voice was gentle and warm to me, but when he turned to Hailey, it turned bone-chillingly cold. "You did this to my sister?" Hailey didn't panic at all. She scoffed at Christian, completely unfazed. "Oh, look how worried you are. Don't tell me that bastard in her belly is yours?" "Yeah, I taught her a lesson. What of it? I'll handle you, her little lover, too!" As soon as Hailey finished, her bodyguards closed in. With a single look from Christian, his bodyguards charged, taking down Hailey's men in seconds. But then, I saw more bodyguards flooding in from the hallway. My heart sank. "Christian, why did you only bring a few men?" I asked worriedly. "It happened too fast, and I was nearby, so I grabbed whoever was closest. Don't worry, Dad is already on his way." He comforted me patiently. "I want to see who dares to touch my sister while I'm standing here!" My mind eased a bit. But I noticed Hailey gritting her teeth as she looked at her downed guards. She dialed a number. Her voice turned sickeningly sweet instantly. "Honey, someone is bullying me! Are you going to help me or what?" "Of course I am!" Ethan's voice, both familiar and strange, came through the speakerphone Hailey had intentionally turned on. Familiar because it was indeed Ethan. Strange because I had never heard him use such a tender, doting tone before. A flash of bitterness crossed my mind, cutting away another piece of my grief over my dead baby. Hailey glared at Christian and me triumphantly, continuing to whine, "Some guy named Christian Sterling beat up my bodyguards and said he's going to kill me!" "I'm so scared. Come quickly, okay?" "Ch... Christian Sterling?" Ethan's voice suddenly squeaked, as if someone had him by the throat. "Which Christian Sterling?! What the fuck did you do?!" The frantic questions made Hailey's face pale slightly. She quickly turned off the speakerphone. But Ethan's near-screaming voice could still be heard. "Stay where you are! Do nothing! Do you hear me? Nothing! I'm coming right now!" Hailey mumbled her location and hung up quickly. She took a deep breath, and her arrogant look returned. "You guys are dead! My husband is on his way!" "He said if we beat you to death, we'll just pay some money. Who the hell is Christian Sterling anyway? Never heard of him!" With a wave of her hand, her guards swarmed us. Even though Christian's men were highly trained, they were outnumbered. One by one, they fell. A dozen large men slowly surrounded Christian and me. He stood up, shielding me firmly behind his back. After just two rounds of fighting, several cuts appeared on his arms. Seeing my brother bleed, my eyes turned red. Struggling, I picked up a discarded knife from the floor, stumbled to my feet, and lunged at the cheering Hailey. *Stab—* The blade went straight into Hailey's abdomen. Her eyes widened in disbelief. She slowly turned her head and met my bloodshot eyes. A shrill scream echoed through the room."Ahhh!" Hailey pushed me away frantically, but I still held onto the knife. Once the blade left her body, the pain seemed to double. Hailey's screams grew sharper. Her bodyguards froze in shock. Holding her wound tightly, Hailey glared at me as I lay on the floor. "What are you standing there for? Kill them! Kill them both!" With the order, the bodyguards rushed forward, raining blows on us with batons. Christian threw himself over me, shielding me with his body. The dull thuds of the batons hitting him echoed in my ears. Suddenly, a drop of warm blood fell onto my lips. Christian shuddered and collapsed heavily onto me. "Christian? Christian! Wake up..." No response. I turned my head with great difficulty, only to see blood gushing from the back of his head. Before I could even process the panic, the bodyguards dragged Christian and me to the rooftop. They tied us to the edge of the terrace, binding our hands tightly to the freezing cold railing. Their rough movements tore at the wounds on my pregnant belly. Blood had soaked through half of my clothes. A short distance away, Christian's white shirt was covered in blood at the collar. The biting wind on the rooftop kept me barely conscious. Christian, still unconscious, swayed with the wind. A crowd had gathered below, their chaotic whispers drifting up to my ears. "I heard it's a side chick who got pregnant by another man and tried to force a divorce. The wife caught them, and now they're hanging up there." "Tsk tsk, serves them right. Cheaters deserve to die." I could only keep whispering to my brother, hoping he would wake up. As time passed, my vision began to blur, and Christian remained completely unresponsive. Hailey's arrogant voice echoed on the rooftop again. "Oh, still alive?" Seeing her, my eyes flared with rage. I gritted my teeth. "Hailey, you better let us go right now. Otherwise, when my dad gets here, you won't survive the consequences." She laughed like a lunatic and took a recurve bow from one of her men. "Oh, then I guess I should kill you two lovebirds right now so you can keep me company in hell?" Hailey drew the bow, aiming first at Christian's swaying body. "You know, Ethan and I met at an archery range. You probably know how good he is at archery, right?" "Too bad my skills aren't as good." My heart sank. Ethan's archery range was funded by me. I never expected it to be the starting point of his affair. The next second, an arrow pierced my shoulder. The agonizing pain made me bite my lip. "How annoying. I was aiming for your brother. Missed by a mile." Another twang of the bowstring. This time, the arrow pierced Christian's chest. The intense pain finally woke him up, and he let out a roared cry. Seeing the situation, his eyes flared with pure rage. "Hailey Miller! I swear, I will tear you to pieces!" But Hailey just laughed manually, repeatedly drawing and releasing the bow. Christian desperately swung his body to shield me. Soon, he was hit by multiple arrows, covered in blood. A weak, raspy sound came from his throat. On the rooftop, Hailey seemed tired. She leaned on her bow, panting. Suddenly, my phone rang loudly next to her. Confused, she picked it up, and Ethan's panicked voice came through: "Elena, where are you? I can explain everything about Hailey. Please, don't hurt her!" "You don't want me to hate you forever, do you?" I laughed. "Ethan Vance! Your mistress is about to kill Christian and me!" "And the baby you cared so much about is already dead!" I screamed at the phone, but the wind swept my voice away. Only Hailey's confused voice echoed on the rooftop: "Honey? Why are you calling her?" "Don't worry, I handled it. Though... you might need to pay some money..." There was silence on the other end, followed by heavy panting. Then, Ethan's furious roar erupted: "Hailey Miller! What the fuck did you do to Elena Sterling?! Do you have any idea who she is?! She's the heiress of the Sterling family! I..." Hailey hung up abruptly. She frowned, staring at the number on the screen. Her eyes flickered, and she mumbled to herself. Then she looked at my dying brother and me, still struggling. "What fucking Sterling family...""You're Elena Sterling?" Hailey stood over me, looking down as I was pulled back onto the rooftop. Her pupils dilated with fear. I sneered, "What? Believe me now?" "Have you ever seen Ethan this terrified?" But the next second, her trembling stopped, and a manic look flashed in her eyes. "No! That's impossible!" "I am Ethan's wife! I am the rightful Mrs. Vance!" She screamed, pulling a marriage certificate out of her bag and slamming it against my chest. "You're just a side chick who can't face the light!" Hesitantly, I opened the certificate. My brows furrowed deeply. The red seal, the watermark, the serial number... Everything told me this marriage certificate was real. Then I remembered our wedding three years ago. Ethan had insisted on going to the county clerk's office alone to handle the paperwork, claiming he didn't want me to get tired. I burst into laughter. I laughed at my own stupidity. I had been fooled by this scumbag for years. I looked up at Hailey, my eyes filled with endless hatred. "Great. You two can keep each other company on the road to hell legally." "You're the side chick! Why are you acting so righteous?!" Hailey screamed. She panted, her voice dropping, "But... Ethan has never raised his voice at me. Yes, it must be you! You seduced him!" "You knew he wanted a baby, so you got pregnant by some random guy to trap him, didn't you?" "This baby can't be Ethan's... it's impossible..." With a crazed look in her eyes, Hailey picked up the knife from the floor and held it high above me. "Once I kill the bastard in your womb, you'll be next!" As the blade came down, I realized what she was doing. I scrambled to roll away. Seeing me struggle, Hailey screamed hysterically, "Pin her down! Once she's dead, Ethan will only love me!" The bodyguards pinned my arms and legs. I watched Hailey raise the knife again. "Hailey! Don't you dare..." "Ahhh!" The excruciating pain of the blade piercing my body cut off my scream. The waves of pain kept me conscious. I screamed until my voice went hoarse, finally turning my head weakly. I saw Christian, who had been on the verge of death, crawling toward me with immense effort. "Elena... wait for me... Christian is coming to save you..." His eyes were bloodshot, tears streaming down his face. With every inch he crawled, the arrows in his chest dug deeper. Looking at the trail of blood behind him, my heart shattered. "Christian! Stop moving! Just run! Leave me!" But he kept crawling, his voice fading. "I'm not leaving... I won't let... my sister... suffer..." But I had never seen my brilliant, proud brother in such a pathetic state... I fought uselessly against the hands pinning me down, regret consuming me. If only... if only I hadn't insisted on marrying Ethan. If only I had cut Ethan off the moment I heard rumors of his affair. My baby wouldn't have died, and my brother wouldn't be in this state. I turned and glared at Hailey, screaming with all my might, "Hailey Miller! You and Ethan Vance will pay for my brother and my baby in blood!" Hailey didn't care at all. "No one can save you today! You're both going to die!!" "Stop!" Ethan stumbled through the rooftop door, his face turning pale as death at the sight. The next second, dozens of private helicopters circled above the rooftop. My father, William Sterling, stood at the open cabin door, looking down at the scene. "You dare touch my children? You're dead!"
