On our fifth anniversary, Grayson handed me a plate of sliced apples and told me the woman he had been sleeping with was pregnant. He could not even look me in the eye. "Her name is Chloe. She's seven months along," he mumbled, rubbing his face. "She swore that if I sent her to Europe, she'd disappear forever." "It's a life, Jenna. I wanted you to hear it from me. Not from her when she showed up at our door." My mind went blank. It took me a full minute to find my voice. "Are you sure… it's yours?" "I'm trash, baby. Please forgive me." His eyes were red. I looked at our twin girls stacking blocks on the rug. My fingers trembled. The words "she's lying" almost slipped out. I swallowed them. Because the moment I exposed that woman, I would have to tell him the truth too. He was sterile. He could not father a child if his life depended on it. And those two little girls on the carpet? They were not his either. --- Grayson mistook my silence for heartbreak. He tried to pull me into his arms. I stepped away. "When?" I asked. His hand froze in the air. "Seven months ago. That business trip to Miami. I got wasted—" "Wasted enough to still get it up?" I let out a cold laugh. His face turned red. "Honey, it was one stupid night. The doctor says her body is weak. Ending the pregnancy could put her life at risk. Chloe is a sweet girl. She doesn't want a title. She just wants the baby. She won't touch our family." "And she agreed to leave for Europe?" "Yes. Just a settlement check. She signs an NDA and never comes back." He was practically begging. He grabbed my hand. His eyes were dripping fake devotion. "Jenna, you've always been the reasonable one. Once the baby is born, we'll bring him home. You'll raise him. Chloe leaves. Forever." Raise the kid he had with another woman? "And if I say no?" His face went cold. He dropped my hand. "Jenna, don't be selfish. You ruined your body having those twin girls. You can't give me a son. Now someone else is willing to. You should be grateful." Grateful. I stared at this man I had lived with for five years. Five years ago, at our pre-wedding physical, the doctor pulled me aside. "I'm so sorry, Mrs. Sinclair. Your husband has congenital azoospermia. There is no chance of natural conception. There is no cure." Grayson was the most arrogant, macho man I had ever met. If he found out he could never father a child, he would lose his mind. He would probably put a bullet in his head. On his deathbed, his father begged me. "Please. Give the Hunt family a child." To protect Grayson's pride, I buried the report. I told him we both needed "fertility support." Under his father's arrangement, I did IVF. We used a sperm bank donor. The day I found out I was pregnant with twins, Grayson spun me around like a little boy, laughing. "God's greatest gift to the Hunts." For five years, he worshipped those girls. And now he was telling me he had gotten another woman pregnant. The absurdity was so crushing I could not even cry. "Grayson." I stared straight at his face. "How much is this settlement check?" He held up five fingers. "Five hundred grand." I actually laughed. Use our joint savings to raise some other man's child? "And if I say no?" His jaw tightened. "Jenna, cut it out. That's a life. That's my blood. I'm already trying to make this right with you. Don't push your luck." I took a deep breath and swallowed the nausea rising in my throat. "Fine." I nodded. "I agree. As long as she stays out of my face." But baby, not one dime of the Hunt fortune is going to that child. ---

Thirty minutes later, the doorbell rang. A woman in a skin-tight dress stood on my porch. Her belly stuck out, and she had a suitcase in her hand. Grayson froze. "Chloe? What are you doing here?" She burst into tears and threw herself into his arms. "Grayson, baby, I'm scared. I keep having nightmares that I lose the baby. I just… I need to be near you. Please?" He looked at me, completely torn. Chloe looked at me too. Her mouth curled into a nasty little smirk, but her voice came out sweet as syrup. "Jenna, I know I shouldn't be getting between you two. But this baby is the Hunt family's first son. Grayson can't bear to send me overseas alone. Just a few days. For the Hunt family. You wouldn't be that petty, would you?" I stepped aside and made a small "come in" gesture. "Welcome." Her first night in the house, she set her sights on my master bedroom. "Baby, the guest room faces north. It's so gloomy. That's bad for the boy." She rubbed her belly and pouted. "The doctor says I need sunlight. It helps the baby grow strong." Grayson did not even hesitate. He pointed at me. "Jenna, take the guest room. Just for a while." I was in the middle of reading the twins a bedtime story. I closed the book. He tossed my pillow onto the guest bed. "Chloe is really far along. Our mattress is softer." I looked at my pillow on the floor. We had bought those pillows the week we got married. Now they were being thrown out like trash. "That's our bed," I said. "Oh, please. We're all family. Yours, mine, whatever." Chloe was leaning in the doorway in my silk pajamas, sipping a bowl of bone broth Diane had just made her. "Jenna, if you're that picky, I'll buy new sheets. Promise." She pushed her belly out on purpose. "The doctor says the baby needs space." Diane, my mother-in-law, jumped right in. "Exactly. You're the one causing all this drama. Why are you hogging the master bedroom? Don't bring that kind of trouble into this house." The twins woke up. They shuffled out, rubbing their eyes. "Mommy…" Rosie, the shy one, saw the stranger and buried her face in my leg. "Oh, great. The little brats are up." Diane waved her hand like she was swatting flies. "Get them out. Don't disturb Chloe." Grayson stood there. Head down. Silent. I scooped Rosie up and took Lily by the hand. "Okay. Let's go." I did not want my girls watching this. That night, the three of us squeezed into the tiny guest bed. Through the wall, I could hear Chloe's soft little moans and Grayson's low voice answering her. One wall. That was all it took to turn five years of love into the sharpest knife I had ever felt. The next morning, a scream tore through the living room. The twins were playing with blocks. Chloe stuck out her foot and tripped Lily. "WAAAH!" Lily's knee split open. She wailed. "OH MY GOD! MY BABY!" Chloe hit the floor first, clutching her stomach. "The little brat ran into me! Grayson! Help! Something's wrong!" Grayson came flying out of the study. He did not even look at Lily's bleeding knee. He just slapped his daughter across the face. SMACK. "You little animal! Are you trying to kill your brother?!" ---

Lily froze. Five red finger marks bloomed on her cheek. Something inside me snapped clean in half. I shoved Grayson back and put my body between him and my baby. "Grayson! Are you out of your damn mind?!" "You didn't raise her right!" He jabbed a finger at my nose. "That kind of evil at her age? She got it from you. Jenna, if anything happens to Chloe or that baby, I swear to God I'll bury you." Diane was right there egging him on. "Exactly. Those little brats are jealous. Throw them out. I don't want to look at them." Chloe lay against Grayson's chest, panting weakly. "Baby, don't blame Jenna… the kid didn't know better… but oh God, my stomach hurts so bad…" "Hospital. Now." Grayson scooped her up and bolted for the door. On his way out, he shot me a look that could kill. "You sit here and think about what you've done. You don't leave this house without my say-so." The door slammed hard enough to shake the walls. I looked at Lily's swollen cheek. My heart was bleeding. "Mommy, why doesn't Daddy love me anymore?" she sobbed. I wiped her tears and squeezed her tight. I cleaned her up. I iced the bruise. Then I packed our bags. I was done with this house. But before I walked out, I had one last little gift to leave behind. Let them find out where that son actually came from. That afternoon, I had the girls by the door, ready to go. Grayson walked back in. He was glowing. He had a sonogram in his hand. "Trying to run?" He blocked me. "Yeah, Jenna, I figured you knew you couldn't stay. You can leave. But you walk away with nothing. That's what you get for teaching my kid to hurt people." He slapped the sonogram right against my cheek. "Take a good look. It's a BOY. The doctor says he's developing perfectly." He was practically bouncing. "The Hunts finally got a real heir." I looked at that little black-and-white picture. And I laughed. Quietly. "Grayson. You know what they say. The louder a man brags, the smaller the thing he's bragging about." "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" "Nothing." Chloe stayed in the hospital for three days. "Bed rest," she called it. Grayson waited on her like she was royalty. To clear space for her, he shoved a divorce agreement at me. "The house is mine. The savings are mine. The kids are yours." He tossed the pen across the counter. "Sign it. Then get out." "Out of respect for what we had, I'm not pressing charges over Lily shoving Chloe." I looked at that garbage contract. I signed it. No hesitation. "Grayson. Someday you're going to be on your knees begging me. I hope your kneecaps are strong." "Begging you?" He barked out a laugh. "I've got a son, a daughter, money, and a house. Why the hell would I ever beg some cast-off ex-wife? Get real." One week later, my phone rang. Grayson. His voice was shaking. Pure panic. "Jenna… where are you? Get to Central Hospital. Bring Lily and Rosie. Please. Just bring them." "Why? Your precious son finally born?" I said coldly. "Something happened…" His voice cracked. "Chloe fell. She's hemorrhaging. The baby came early…" Turns out, Chloe had been acting like a queen around the house. She had insisted on strutting down the staircase in stilettos to film content for her socials. She missed a step and tumbled all the way down. ---
