Back when "manifesting" was all over social media, my boyfriend Ethan Lockwood asked me, "Is there anything you want?" I jumped up, barely able to contain my excitement, and told him: "I want a MINI Cooper. I've wanted one for three years." "Once I get it, I'm posting on Instagram: Serena wants it, Serena gets it." He listened, then just patted me on the head without saying a word. I assumed he was secretly planning a surprise for me. Until the next day, when his assistant Hannah Collins posted an Instagram story: "Just mentioned yesterday that I wanted a Bentley, and today Boss went and bought me one~" The photo showed a fully loaded Bentley Continental GT. And Ethan, who never interacted on social media, left a comment underneath: "Hannah wants it, Hannah gets it." In that moment, it all clicked. It wasn't that he didn't know how to make me happy. He simply didn't want to. Fine then. From now on, whatever I wanted, I'd get it myself.

Fine then. From now on, whatever I wanted, I'd get it myself. ... Ethan came home just as I finished reading that post. He caught a glimpse of my phone screen from the corner of his eye. "Mad about something?" His tone was completely casual. I didn't speak. I just looked at him. "Hannah needs a car more than you do." "She delivers documents for me, picks up my meals. She needs a car." "You don't have a job or a career. A car would be useless to you." He explained it so calmly, every word landing like a blade in my chest. I had given up my career to support his startup. I spent hours making the meals he liked. I walked to buy groceries even in pouring rain. Now that he'd made it, I asked him for a MINI Cooper. And he was telling me I didn't deserve a car. "It's not like you can't afford one. You could buy two, one for me and one for her. But instead you chose to humiliate me like this. Ethan, when did you become this person?" "Every single day, rain or shine, blistering heat or howling wind, I walk over a mile to the grocery store. All I wanted was a MINI Cooper. It wasn't even a fraction of what you spent on her Bentley. Was that really so much to ask?" "From now on, I won't bother telling you any of this. And I won't need you to fulfill a single wish of mine ever again." I said everything in one breath, my voice trembling the entire time. But Ethan just looked at me. He raised his index finger to his lips and let out a quiet "Shh." I froze. He just thought I was being noisy. He used to be the one who never stopped talking to me. Back in that tiny rental apartment, buzzing with excitement as we dreamed about the future together. Back then he said, "Once I make it, I'm going to give you everything you ever wish for." I'd laughed along with him like a fool, imagining our future together a thousand times over. But now, there was someone new by his side, clinging to him like a piece of gum that wouldn't unstick. Hannah had wormed her way into every corner of our life. Meals. Movies. Trips. She was everywhere. He dressed it up as necessity: Hannah was responsible for both his work and his personal life, and couldn't be out of his sight. Including right now, as he completely ignored how defeated I felt. He opened the door, and there was Hannah. "Ethan, I'm so happy! Driving that Bentley makes me feel like the whole world belongs to me!" Her face was glowing with joy. Ethan couldn't help but reach over and pat her on the head. His voice went soft. "You deserve to be happy. People who are never satisfied just throw tantrums all day. Hannah, next time I'll get you an even better car." I stood frozen behind him. He was calling me the one who was never satisfied. But what I wanted to tell him was that just yesterday, the number one investment bank in the world had extended me an offer, inviting me back into the industry. He'd long forgotten that before I was with him, I was already one of the best in finance. Not this woman standing behind him, reduced to holding out her hand for his money. But for him, I'd been willing to give up everything. Yesterday, I was going to turn it down and stay by his side. Now, I wanted to say yes. I wanted to leave him.

Hannah was beaming. "A car like this is more than enough to make me happy!" She turned to me. "Serena must have tons of cars to pick from, right?" I answered flatly. "Not right now. But I will." Ethan's brow furrowed instantly. "When did I ever say I'd buy you a car?" "You don't need one. Just stay home and take care of the house." I let out a cold laugh. In his mind, buying a car meant depending on him. But what I meant was that I'd buy one myself. "Serena doesn't even have a job. She really doesn't need a car. Staying home doing housework all day, must be so relaxing." Hannah chimed in right on cue, and Ethan glanced at me. "Indeed." The absurdity of it hit me like a wave. He had a sensitive stomach, so I spent two hours every day preparing meals tailored to his diet. We lived in a two-story townhouse, and he refused to hire a cleaning service because he didn't like strangers touching his things. Cleaning alone took an entire afternoon. He just never saw any of it. All he had to do was enjoy a home-cooked dinner and a spotless house. I fought back the urge to cry. "Ethan, anyone in the world can say I have it easy. Anyone except you." Seeing me on the verge of tears, Ethan looked almost guilty for a moment. He opened his mouth to say something, but Hannah cut in. "Serena, you have no idea how hard Ethan works every day. Only I know how exhausted he is. You should be more understanding. I'm just his assistant, but I really feel for him." Ethan looked down at her and smiled. "Look at you, actually worrying about me." "At least someone around here appreciates me." Hannah tilted her face up at him. "Well, since your fiancée doesn't appreciate you, I guess someone has to pick up the slack, right?" Ethan laughed and gave her forehead a light tap with his finger. When he turned back to me, his eyes were ice cold. "Serena, see?" "Hannah helps me so much with work every day, and she never once complains about being tired." I lowered my head. I didn't want to say another word. "Sure. I'm the one who has it easy, right?" I turned and walked into the bedroom. The door hadn't even closed yet. Hannah walked right in. She opened the closet and pulled out a few of Ethan's suits and dress shirts. Every week she came to take his clothes to the dry cleaner. But this time, her eyes drifted to the corner of the closet. Folded neatly there were the cheap matching hoodies Ethan and I had bought back when he was still struggling. Neither of us had ever had the heart to throw them away. Hannah glanced at them and called out toward the living room. "Ethan, there are some ratty old clothes in here. Want me to toss them?" I was about to speak. From outside came Ethan's low voice. "Do whatever you want with it." The words died in my throat. I stared at those silly, almost laughable matching hoodies in her hands. Maybe back then was when we were happiest. I didn't stop her. Hannah gathered up the clothes, then let her gaze settle on me. "Serena, why are you still keeping this junk?" "Ethan stopped loving you a long time ago. Haven't you noticed?" She smiled, bold and brazen. A completely different person from the one she played in front of Ethan. "I know you really wanted that car. But he just wouldn't buy it for you. I barely mentioned it once, and he got it for me on the spot." "Jealous?" I looked at her, and a laugh escaped before I could stop it. She glared at me, irritated. I smiled and said: "Hannah, sometimes I actually think you're kind of adorable." "All your little schemes are so obvious, and so ridiculous. Don't you think?"

A young girl's intentions are easy enough to read. I just didn't care anymore. She stormed up to me, face twisted with anger. The next second, she dropped to the floor with a thud. And burst into tears. Ethan rushed in, frowning at the scene before him. Hannah cried even harder. "I want to die!" "Serena called me shameless because she's jealous you bought me a car!" She wailed at the top of her lungs. Ethan looked at her with pained concern and hurried over to help her up. "I've told you before. If someone wrongs you, fight back. Whatever the problem is, I'll handle it for you." Hannah's sobbing eased slightly. "But she's your fiancée. Otherwise I definitely would've told her off." Ethan sighed, sounding helpless. "So what if she's my fiancée? You can still tell her off." He turned to me, his gaze frigid. "Apologize to Hannah." I raised an eyebrow. "And if I refuse?" Hannah sobbed out her next words between hiccups. "I don't want her apology. Can you just make her wash my car instead?" Ethan agreed without a moment's hesitation. "Of course. No problem." I stood up. "Ethan, you've gone too far." His voice dropped low. "Can you just stop? Just this once, do it for me." "I'll wash it with you." He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the door. And there it was. That MINI Cooper I'd been dreaming about, just sitting there. He picked up the hose and shoved it into my hands. Hannah stood off to the side, directing us. "Here. And over there. Make sure you get it all clean." I didn't move. Hannah suddenly snatched the hose from me. As if she'd lost her grip, she aimed it straight at my face. The water hit me dead on. She burst out laughing, like she'd just discovered the funniest game in the world. "Serena, forget about washing the car. This is way more fun!" The stream kept blasting into my face. The pressure stung my skin raw, and it felt like blood was about to break through the surface. My eyes burned. I blinked frantically, drenched and humiliated. But Ethan just watched Hannah and laughed. As if nothing was wrong at all. I couldn't take it anymore. I lunged forward and ripped the hose out of her hands. I was about to turn it on her. Ethan immediately stepped in front of her. In an instant, he was soaked from head to toe. We stood there, staring at each other. After a long silence, he said: "Happy now?" "I knew it. You always have to get even, don't you?" I went still. The hose slipped from my hands and hit the ground. I had no idea what I looked like in that moment. Hair plastered to my face. Clothes soaking wet. Eyes so swollen I could barely see. But none of that hurt as much as his words. He used to tell me I was the kindest girl in the world. He couldn't bear the thought of anyone hurting me. He told me never to blame myself for anything. And now, he was the one hurting me, over and over again. I looked at him in silence. It seemed like only now did he actually notice the state I was in. But all he did was frown slightly. "Why didn't you move out of the way?" My face was red and swollen from the blast, covered in bruises from the pressure. I wiped the tears from my face. I didn't want him to see them. "The pressure was so strong I couldn't even open my eyes. How was I supposed to move?" He looked at me, and something that might have been guilt flickered across his face. He took a step toward me. But Hannah grabbed his hand. "I didn't mean to. I was just trying to lighten the mood between me and Serena. I had no idea the pressure was that strong." Ethan was quiet for a beat. "Enough. Both of you, stop it. It's done." He dismissed the whole thing with a single sentence, leaving me standing there soaked and humiliated.
