### Chapter 1 My girlfriend told me her company was holding a week-long retreat in the mountains with a strict no-phone policy. She was supposed to come back tomorrow, so I decided to surprise her by going to her apartment tonight. But when I reached her door, I heard noises inside. She had always told me she lived alone. In the next second, a young guy’s voice drifted out from inside. "Stop moving. Let me see your Snapchat." My hand froze in mid-air, right above the doorknob. Then came her voice, filled with giggles. "Stop it. I didn’t even take a picture of you." My body went completely rigid. I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. She picked up, her voice still carrying a lazy, amused tone. "Hey, babe? What's up?" "I’m standing outside your apartment. Open the door." Inside, the apartment went dead silent. 1 I hung up the phone. I reached into my bag and pulled out the spare key. She had given me this key two years ago. I still remembered her exact words back then: "Take it. Come over whenever you want. It’s going to be our home sooner or later anyway." But I had never used it without letting her know first. I slid the key into the lock, turned it, and heard a sharp click. The door swung open. The hallway light was on. Next to the shoe rack sat her sneakers, alongside a pair of men's white sneakers I had never seen before. I didn't step inside. I just stood in the entryway. From the living room came the frantic rustling of clothes, fabric rubbing against fabric, and hushed, panicked whispers. I took two steps forward. A pair of men’s jeans—a very youthful style—was tossed casually next to the sofa. A single white sock lay on the floor nearby. On the coffee table, there were two wine glasses and a half-empty bottle of Cabernet. And then, I saw them. She was scrambling up from the sofa, frantically pulling her dress over her shoulders. Her zipper was only half-done, and her hair was a complete mess. A young guy was shrinking back behind her, a faint red mark visible on his shoulder. I stopped right in the middle of the living room. A numb thought popped into my head: *It was a good thing I called first.* If I had just burst in, what would I have seen? Would it have been even more disgusting than this? "Ethan..." She finally spoke, her voice tight and trembling. "Why are you..." "I thought you were at a corporate retreat?" I interrupted her. She froze. Her dress was finally on, but her hair remained wild. She looked down at herself, then looked up at me. The expression on her face was hard to describe. She looked like a thief caught red-handed, yet desperately trying to pretend nothing was wrong. "I... I came back early," she stammered. "Oh," I nodded. "Came back early to continue your 'training' here?" She went quiet. The boy crept out from behind her, his head low as he scrambled to grab his jeans from the floor and pull them on. He looked very young. His hair was dyed a light brown, and his cheeks were flushed with a slight post-drink glow. His hands shook so violently that it took him several tries just to buckle his belt. I stared at him. He sneaked a quick glance at me before darting his eyes away. "And who is he?" I asked. Chloe opened her mouth, but only a couple of muffled syllables came out. She shut it again. She stood there, her hands twitching as if she didn't know where to put them, before finally clenching them into fists at her sides. The silence in the living room was suffocating. The boy got his pants on, slipped into his white sneakers, and made a soft scuffing noise against the hardwood floor. He glanced at her, then at me. With his head buried low, he bolted into the bedroom and slammed the door behind him. *Bang.* I stared at the closed door, then turned my gaze back to her. "Talk to me," I said. "Ethan, I..." She took a step toward me, then hesitated. "I messed up." "I asked you who he is." "Just a friend." "A friend?" She lowered her head, refusing to look at me. I let out a dry laugh. I didn't know if I was laughing at her or at myself. Eight years. I had known her for eight years, and we had been together for eight. From high school to college, and now into our professional lives. I thought I knew her better than anyone. But I had never seen this side of her. "It won't happen again," she said suddenly. She looked up at me, a desperate plea in her eyes. "Seriously, Ethan. It was a one-time thing. It will never happen again." I didn't say a word. She suddenly spun around and began frantically rummaging through the living room. She ripped open the drawers under the coffee table, checked the TV stand, and stuffed her hands under the couch cushions. I watched her, having no idea what she was doing. After a moment, she pulled out a small, red velvet box. She walked over and held it out to me. "I bought this for you," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I was planning on giving it to you in a few days." I glanced down. It was a jewelry box with a designer logo stamped on top. Inside was a luxury watch. I held the box in my hand, staring at it for a few seconds. Then, I walked over to the trash can and threw the watch, box and all, right into the garbage. "Ethan!" she cried out. "I don’t want your trash," I said. I turned around to face her. The expressions on her face kept shifting, as if she wanted to scream but couldn't find the words. The overhead light hit her face, and for the first time, she looked like a complete stranger to me. "We’ve been together for eight years," I said. "And this is how you treat me?" She looked down and kept her mouth shut. "Eight years," I repeated. "Chloe, eight years. Since our junior year of high school. I moved to this city just to be with you. I brought you dinner when you had to work late. I took days off to take care of you when you were sick. I even stayed at the hospital to watch over your dad so you could rest. I thought we were just waiting to get married—waiting until we saved enough, waiting until the apartment was furnished, waiting for everything to be stable. What exactly were you waiting for?" --- ### Chapter 2 2 She still didn't say anything. "Were you waiting for him?" "No!" She snapped her head up, her voice frantic. "It’s not what you think, Ethan. Honestly, I just made a stupid mistake. I had too much to drink..." "Too much to drink?" "Yes! We just had some wine..." The bedroom door clicked open. The boy walked out, his sneakers squeaking softly on the floor. He had changed into a fresh white T-shirt and jeans, and he had quickly run a hand through his hair. He looked much more put-together than he had minutes ago. But he couldn't hide the mark on his neck. A hickey. It was fresh, a dark purplish-red bruise sitting right below his collarbone. He walked over to her side, stood tall, and looked at me. His attitude had completely changed. Earlier, he couldn't even look me in the eye. Now, he glared straight at me, his jaw set in a stubborn, defiant line. "I love her," he said. I just stared at him. "I love her more than you do," he added. His voice wasn't loud, but it was crystal clear. "Our feelings are real." "Shut up!" Chloe whipped around, glaring at him. "Don't say another word!" He blinked, startled, then reached out to wrap his arm around her waist. "That's not what you said earlier. You said you were going to marry me." She shoved his hand away and took a step back. He stood frozen, his face turning stiff. I looked at him, then back at her. She avoided my eyes entirely, staring at the floor while nervously tugging at the hem of her dress. He stood there, biting his lip, his eyes starting to well up with tears. "Do you even know who she is?" I asked the kid. "Did you know she has a boyfriend of eight years?" "Yeah, I knew," he said, lifting his chin defiantly. I was taken aback. "She told me. She said you guys had been together a long time." He paused, glancing at her, but she kept her head down. "But she also said the spark between you two died a long time ago." He kept going, his words coming faster now. "She said you suffocate her. You control everything she does. She has to tell you where she is every second of the day, and she can't even breathe. She said being with me is the only time she feels relaxed, free, and like herself." I stood frozen in place. So, me asking if she made it home safe was "controlling." Me waiting up to have dinner with her was "making her report to me." Me caring about whether she was working herself to exhaustion was "suffocating her." All this time, I thought I was loving her. To her, it was just a nuisance. "She said you’re always nagging her," he added, a hint of smugness creeping into his teary voice. "Nagging her to stop eating takeout, nagging her to sleep early, nagging her whenever she doesn't reply to your texts fast enough. She said she couldn't take it anymore." I looked at Chloe. She kept her head down, refusing to look at me, and refusing to look at him. "Is that true?" I asked. Her lips parted slightly, but no sound came out. "Chloe," I called her name. She finally looked up and met my eyes. Just for a split second, and then she looked away again. But I read that look perfectly. It was true. Every single word of it was true. A wave of exhaustion washed over me, starting from the soles of my feet and rushing to my chest. My legs felt weak, but I refused to sit down. I wouldn't let myself look defeated in front of them. I took a deep, shaky breath. "Fine. We're done." --- ### Chapter 3 3 She whipped her head up, staring at me in shock. "Ethan..." "Don't say my name." I cut her off, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen. "Everything you guys just said? I recorded all of it." She froze. The boy froze, too. "Including your little speech," I said, looking directly at the kid. "You love her, she knew she had a boyfriend and still slept with you. I have it all on tape." The color drained from his face instantly. "You recorded us?" He took a step forward. "When did you start recording?" I didn't answer. I just slipped the phone back into my pocket and turned toward the door. "Wait!" the boy screamed behind me. "Delete that recording right now!" I didn't stop. I kept walking. "Chloe!" he shrieked, his voice cracking. "Tell him to delete it! He can't leave with that! What if he sends it to people? What is he going to do with it?!" I heard a frantic scramble behind me as footsteps rushed toward my back. Before I could reach the doorknob, the kid caught up and grabbed my arm. His hands were ice-cold, his fingernails digging deep into my skin. "Give me the phone!" he yelled. I yanked my arm back, breaking his grip, and stepped away. But he lunged at me again, clawing at my pocket to snatch the phone. I held it high above my head. He couldn't reach it, so he started jumping, his nails scraping hard against the back of my hand. A stinging, burning pain flared up. "Chloe!" he screamed again. "Are you just going to stand there like a corpse?!" I lost my patience and gave him a hard shove. He stumbled backward, losing his footing on the slick hardwood floor, and landed flat on his butt. He let out a sharp cry, sitting on the floor and looking up at me with wide, red, tear-filled eyes, looking incredibly wronged. Chloe rushed over, dropping to her knees to help him up. "Are you okay?" She grabbed his shoulders, scanning him up and down. "Did you hurt yourself?" He leaned into her arms, shaking his head whimpering. I stood there, watching the pathetic display. She suddenly snapped her head up, glaring at me. "Ethan!" she snapped, her voice dropping into a harsh register. "Why did you have to push him?!" I said nothing. She helped the boy stand up. He leaned heavily against her, tears streaming down his face as he muttered, "I'm okay, I'm okay, it's my fault..." The more he played the victim, the tighter she held him. "Delete the recording," she said to me, her tone hardening. "I know I messed up, but you had no right to lay hands on him." I looked at her, suddenly wanting to laugh. But the laughter wouldn't come. "Delete it?" I asked. "Yes," she said. She paused, then added, "I’ll pay you. Just delete the recording." "How much?" She blinked, clearly not expecting me to agree so easily. She hesitated for a moment before saying, "Two thousand dollars." I just stared at her. Eight years. The most expensive gift she had ever bought me was that twelve-hundred-dollar watch. And back then, she had said: *"When we have more money, I'll buy you better things. For now, let's save every penny we can for our wedding."* Our wedding. The word sounded like a sick joke now. And now, just to protect this kid from a recording, she was offering me two thousand dollars without blinking. --- ### Chapter 4 4 "Two thousand?" I said. "Not enough?" She knit her brows. "How much do you want then?" I looked at the boy. He was clinging to her, staring at me with a mix of anxiety and desperate hope. "Forget it. I'm not deleting it." Her expression darkened instantly. "Ethan, don't push your luck." "I’m trying to be civil here. Don’t make this ugly." "Don't make this ugly?" I repeated the words, turning back to the door. "Chloe!" the boy panicked. "Don't let him leave! What if he leaks it? What if my parents find out? They’ll literally kill me!" Chloe stood frozen, her face pale. My hand was already on the doorknob. "Wait," she called out. I didn't turn around. "Ethan, please. I’m begging you." Her voice suddenly softened, turning into a desperate plea. "Please delete the recording. This is all my fault, don't blame him. He's young, he didn't know any better. I'm the one who couldn't control myself. If you want to hate someone, hate me. Just leave him out of this." I slowly turned around. She stood there, holding the boy's hand. They looked like a devoted couple facing down a villain. "He didn't know any better?" "He seemed pretty aware of what he was doing when he was bragging about how you guys are 'true love' even though he knew about me." She went silent. The boy lowered his head, not saying a word. "He's naive, but you're not," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "You knew better, and you still cheated?" She avoided my gaze, staring at the floor. "Chloe," the boy whimpered, tugging at her sleeve. "Make him delete it... what am I going to do..." She looked up at me, her eyes suddenly turning cold and hostile, like a completely different person. "Ethan," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Delete the recording. If you don't, I will take your phone by force." I stood my ground, unmoved. She took a step forward. I reached into my pocket, keeping my hand firmly around my phone. "By force?" I shrugged. "Go ahead. It won't matter." She stopped. "I’ve already set a scheduled message on Snapchat." "If I don't cancel it within the next two hours, the recording will automatically be sent to everyone on my contact list." Her face went entirely white. So did the boy's. She pointed a shaking finger at me. "Are you out of your mind?!" I didn't say a word. She stood there, her lips trembling, unable to make a sound. The boy gripped her arm so hard his nails dug into her sleeve, but she didn't even react to the pain. The living room fell into a heavy silence for a few seconds. "Fifteen thousand dollars," she said suddenly. I looked at her. "Fifteen thousand," she repeated, her voice frantic. "You delete the recording right now, and I’ll transfer fifteen thousand dollars to your Venmo immediately." I kept quiet. "I don't have that much cash on hand, but I can pull it together." She was practically hyperventilating now. "I have twelve thousand in my savings, and I can borrow another three thousand from a friend today. Just delete the recording and we can end this. Okay?" The boy tugged her sleeve, looking a bit hesitant about the money, but he didn't dare speak up. "Fifteen thousand. Transfer it now," I said. She blinked, then frantically whipped out her phone and started tapping the screen. I pulled out my phone and pulled up my Venmo QR code. Her hands shook so badly she had to scan it three times before it went through. When she typed in the amount, her fingers hovered over the screen. She looked up at me. "Sent," she said. "Check your phone." I looked down. My phone buzzed with a notification: *Chloe Carter sent you $15,000.00.* "Now, write me a receipt." "A receipt for what?" "A written confession. State clearly that this fifteen thousand is a voluntary payout to settle our breakup. Write down our relationship timeline, and write down the fact that you cheated. Sign it, and leave a thumbprint."
