For seven years, my boyfriend had a password he never changed: **061599**. Whether it was his phone passcode, his social media accounts, or even his debit card PIN, those six digits unlocked everything. Whenever I asked him what they meant, he would always brush it off and change the subject. I didn't get my answer until Victoria Sterling, his first love who had just returned to the country, introduced herself to me and sent me a picture of them locked in a passionate embrace. In that single second, everything clicked. I calmly saved the photo to my phone, and then I dialed a number I hadn't called in years. "Mom, I agree. I'll go back home and agree to the arranged marriage." There was a tense, three-second silence on the other end of the line. Then, my mother’s voice broke through, filled with an excitement she could barely contain. "I knew you'd come to your senses, Chloe! The Vance family has been waiting for you to say yes." "Come home next week. No, actually, come home tomorrow. You need to meet Julian Vance." I held the phone, staring at my pale reflection in the floor-to-ceiling window. My voice was so calm it surprised even myself. "There’s no need to meet," I said, letting out a heavy, slow breath. "Since it’s a marriage of convenience, as long as he has no objections, let’s just finalize it. The sooner, the better." "Yes, of course! I’ll arrange everything right away!" my mother replied instantly, sounding as if she had been waiting for this exact moment for years. "The Vance family has impeccable values. I've met Julian. He's two years older than you, just returned from running their overseas branches to take over the family empire. He is incredibly stable and mature." As my mother went on and on, my eyes drifted to the nightstand. Sitting there was a framed photo of me and Ethan Carter. In the picture, he was smiling warmly, his arm wrapped tightly around my shoulders. His eyes were fixed on me, as if I were the most precious thing in his entire world. Who would have thought that a man who looked so deeply in love could have his heart entirely occupied by someone else? "Mom, I’m a little tired. I have to go." I gently interrupted her excitement. "You and Dad can decide on the details. I’ll cooperate with whatever you arrange." After hanging up, I collapsed onto the edge of the bed, feeling completely hollow. We had been together for seven years. I had been by Ethan's side through his darkest, most grueling days. When his startup failed three times, we huddled in a damp, moldy basement apartment, sharing a single cup of instant ramen. When his father fell gravely ill, I emptied my entire savings account and borrowed money from every friend I knew to pay the medical bills. When he was framed at work and almost had his reputation ruined, I used all my family’s hidden connections, begging everyone I could to clear his name. And my reward? A passcode he refused to change, and a woman named Victoria Sterling. Over the last seven years, I had asked him countless times about those numbers. Every single time, Ethan would laugh and say it was just a random combination he came up with. I had secretly gone through his contacts, checking the birthdays of everyone he knew, but none of them matched. Until today. Victoria added me on Snapchat. Her very first message read: *“Hi Chloe. I’m Victoria Sterling, Ethan's first love. And the only woman he has ever truly loved.”* How hilarious. The password I couldn’t crack for seven years made perfect sense the moment I saw Victoria's birthday on her Snapchat bio. June 15th, 1999. 061599. When Ethan finally came home, he reeked of alcohol. He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. "Who were you on the phone with, babe?" "My mom," I said, turning around slowly. As I did, a faint scent of gardenia—definitely not my perfume—drifted from his collar. "She was asking when I'm coming back to New York." He frowned, looking genuinely confused. "Why the sudden urge to go back? Did something happen?" "Just catching up. I might not even go," I said, gently pushing him away and keeping my tone vague. He visibly relaxed, a soft smile returning to his face as he playfully ruffled my hair. "Do you want me to go with you?" In the past, whenever he asked this, I would always be the perfect, understanding girlfriend. I would smile and say, *“No, it’s fine, I can handle it. Focus on your work.”* But this time, I stared straight into his eyes and said, "Yes. Do you want to come with me?" Ethan froze. His smile stiffened, and his eyes darted away. "I... of course I want to go with you, Chloe. But the company is preparing for the IPO this week. It’s just... incredibly hectic right now." "I'm so sorry, babe. Next time, okay? I promise I'll go with you next time." I looked into his eyes—the eyes that used to be filled with warmth, but now couldn't even meet my gaze. It was exactly as I expected. Victoria had just returned to the country. How could he possibly bear to leave the city right now? "It's fine. Work comes first," I said, nodding to end the conversation. "Go take a shower." Looking as if he had just been granted a royal pardon, he hurried into the bathroom. I pulled out my phone and tapped on Snapchat, looking at the messages Victoria had sent me earlier. She hadn't waited for my reply before spamming my inbox. *“Thank you for taking care of Ethan for the past seven years. But now that I’m back, I hope you can exit gracefully.”* *“After all, Ethan told me himself that you were nothing but a temporary distraction while I was gone.”* Attached was a photo. It was a picture of the two of them hugging. Ethan's arms were wrapped so tightly around her that his knuckles were white. Victoria was leaning against his chest, smiling radiantly. The background was a luxury hotel room. The timestamp on the photo was from the exact night Ethan claimed he was pulling an all-nighter at the office. I closed the chat without replying. There was no point anymore. The confrontations, the arguments, the tears—we had gone through that cycle so many times over the years. Every time I suspected something, he would hold me tight, tell me I was being paranoid, and swear that I was the only one he loved. And like a fool, I had believed him every single time. A text from my mother popped up: *“Next Tuesday is a perfect date. Your father and I checked the calendar.”* *“The Vance family has already prepared everything. What do you think about hosting the banquet that evening?”* I typed back: *“Sounds perfect.”* Ethan and I had seven years behind us. But now, we only had one week left. ---The next morning, when I woke up, Ethan was already gone. On the dining table sat a cold breakfast. He hadn't even bothered to leave a note. This had become the norm in our relationship. He had grown so used to my unconditional devotion that he took everything I did for granted. I walked into the study and booted up his laptop. The password screen appeared. I typed: **061599**. It unlocked instantly. On the desktop was an unnamed, encrypted folder. I entered **061599** again, and it opened. Inside were hundreds of photos of Victoria Sterling. They were meticulously organized by year, tracing her journey from her innocent college days to her current life as a sophisticated working woman. The latest photo was taken just last night at the airport arrivals gate. Ethan was holding a massive bouquet of white roses, and Victoria was throwing herself into his arms. So, his "crucial business dinner" last night was actually a trip to the airport to welcome his first love home. I opened Instagram and searched for Victoria's profile. Sure enough, she had posted a new photo last night. The caption read: *“Seven years later, back on home soil. And his first embrace still feels just as warm as the day I left.”* The photo showed the airport terminal, with a man’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist from behind. The designer suit jacket he was wearing in the photo was the exact birthday present I had bought for Ethan last month. I closed the folder, cleared the browser history, and walked back to the bedroom to start packing. I didn't have much. One large suitcase was enough to fit all my essentials. I left behind every designer coat, bag, and piece of jewelry he had ever gifted me. Anything bought with his money could stay here for the next girl. At 3:00 PM, a text from Ethan popped up: *“Working late tonight, babe. Don't wait up for dinner.”* He added a kissing emoji. I replied with a simple: *“Okay.”* Nothing more. In the past, I would have bombarded him with questions: *Where are you working? Do you want me to bring you takeout? What time will you be home?* But now, none of it mattered. I called a moving company and scheduled a pickup for six days from now. Ethan didn't come home that night. He didn't text to explain, and I didn't bother to ask. Instead, I spent the next day finalizing my resignation at work. Ethan and I worked in the same industry; in fact, my company was one of his startup's major business partners. Years ago, in order to help him secure resources and clients, I had turned down a massive promotion at a top-tier firm just to stay at this company, where I could easily funnel clients to him. Now, it was time to leave. When I handed in my resignation letter, my boss was in absolute shock. He tried repeatedly to get me to stay, but seeing my absolute resolve, he finally signed the papers. "If you ever want to come back, Chloe, my door is always open," he said sincerely. I nodded gratefully, packed up my personal belongings, and walked out of the office building under the confused stares of my coworkers. On the drive home, I made a detour and stopped by the coffee shop where Ethan and I had first met. Seven years ago, right here. "Excuse me, you dropped your book." Those were the first words he ever said to me. It was a cliché, cheesy pickup line, but back then, it had made my heart skip a beat. Back then, he was just a broke college student with nothing to his name, and I was a sheltered rich girl who knew nothing of the world. For him, I had nearly cut ties with my wealthy family, choosing to live in poverty just to help him build his company from scratch. Looking back, I was so incredibly, tragically stupid. ---When Ethan finally returned home, he carried the distinct scent of hotel-brand body wash. "The meeting ran incredibly late last night, so I just grabbed a room at the hotel next to the office," he explained, his eyes carefully avoiding mine. "Is that so?" I said softly, stepping forward to straighten his tie. "You must be exhausted." "Chloe... are you okay?" He finally seemed to sense that something was off. He looked down at me, his brows furrowed in confusion. "You seem... different today." I looked up at his face. This was the face I had adored with every fiber of my being for seven years. Now, looking at him, I felt nothing but a dull, exhausting numbness. "Do I?" I replied casually. "I'm probably just tired from work." He reached out to take my hand, but I instinctively took a step back, letting his hand hang awkwardly in mid-air. A flash of unease crossed his face. "Have I been neglecting you lately because of work?" he asked, stepping closer to try and smooth things over. "Things are just crazy at the firm right now. Once the IPO is done, I’ll take you on a vacation. Didn't you say you wanted to go to Iceland to see the Northern Lights?" The Northern Lights. Yes, I had begged him to take me to Iceland for seven straight years. And every single year, he would tell me, *“Next year, babe. We’ll go next year.”* Year after year, the Northern Lights remained in the sky, but my love for him had completely withered away. "No need," I said, looking down as I organized some files on the table. "I don't really care about seeing them anymore." He stunned, clearly not expecting me to reject the offer so flatly. "Chloe, you—" Suddenly, his phone rang. A custom ringtone played, and I instantly knew who was on the other end. He glanced at the screen, panic flaring in his eyes as he immediately declined the call. "Why didn't you answer?" I asked. "Just... a spam caller," he lied, his eyes darting around. I gave him a faint smile and didn't press further. After dinner, he claimed there was an emergency at the office and rushed out the door again. I knew he was going to see Victoria. I didn't stop him. I just stood by the window, watching his car pull out of the driveway. Then, I turned around and continued wiping away every single trace of my existence from our apartment. Later that night, my mother called. "Chloe, the Vance family has finalized everything. The ceremony will be in three days." "Julian heard that you agreed to the marriage, and he immediately booked a flight back from London. He said he wants to personally welcome you home." I froze for a moment. To be honest, I had zero expectations for this unknown fiancé. This marriage was nothing more than an escape route for me to leave this city and my shattered past behind. But Julian's immediate return surprised me. "I’ve already booked your flight," my mother continued. "Tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM. Julian will be waiting for you at the airport arrivals gate." "Understood, Mom." I hung up and looked at the calendar on the wall. Three days left. My seven-year history with Ethan was down to its final seventy-two hours. As evening fell, a text notification lit up my phone screen. It was from Victoria. *“Tomorrow at 3:00 PM. The cafe downtown. Let’s talk.”* My first instinct was to ignore it, but after a moment of thought, I typed back: *“Sure.”* It was time to put an end to this chapter once and for all. ---On the second day of my countdown, I arrived at the cafe right on time. In person, Victoria was even more beautiful than in her photos. Her eyes held an undeniable air of arrogance and self-assurance. She scanned me up and down, a faint, condescending smirk playing on her lips. "Please, sit down, Chloe." I calmly took my seat opposite her and ordered an iced Americano. "I’ll get straight to the point," she began, leaning forward. "Ethan and I are each other's first loves. We only broke up in college because of a misunderstanding. Now that I’m back, we both want to start over." I slowly stirred my coffee, remaining completely silent. Taking my silence as weakness, she pressed on. "I know you've sacrificed a lot for him over the past seven years, but you can't force love. He wants you to... exit gracefully." I looked up, meeting her gaze. "Did he actually tell you to say this to me?" She hesitated for a split second. "He just couldn't bring himself to tell you directly. After all, you two have been together for so long." I let out a soft laugh. "Victoria, do you know something?" "Ethan and I have been together for seven years. His phone, his laptop, and every single one of his accounts share the exact same password: 061599." "It took me seven long years to realize what those numbers meant," I said slowly. "And then I realized... June 15th, 1999. It's your birthday. He never forgot you." A triumphant, smug smile spread across her face. "But," I pivoted, holding her gaze, "are you sure you want to risk your future on a man who is so easily unfaithful?" Her smile faltered. "What do you mean by that?" "I mean," I leaned in, staring directly into her eyes, "if he can betray me for you today, he can easily betray you for someone else tomorrow." Her face instantly turned pale. "Besides," I took a slow sip of my coffee, "I don’t want him anymore. If you love recycling trash so much, he’s all yours." I stood up, pulled a twenty-dollar bill from my purse, and tossed it onto the table. "The coffee's on me. Happy ever after to you both." Without waiting to see the fury on her face, I turned and walked out. When I got back to the apartment, I was surprised to find Ethan sitting on the sofa. His face was incredibly dark. "Did you go see Victoria?" he demanded the second I stepped through the door. Wow. Word travels fast. "Yes, I did," I admitted freely. "What did you say to her?! She was crying hysterically on the phone!" I let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Ethan, tell me, in what capacity are you interrogating me right now?" "Are you acting as the cheating boyfriend who wasted seven years of my life, or the hypocritical ex-boyfriend trying to protect his precious first love?" He froze, completely thrown off by my bluntness. "Chloe, I..." "Save your breath," I cut him off. "I know everything." I walked into the bedroom and wheeled out my pre-packed suitcase. "Where do you think you're going?" He scrambled off the couch, panic finally creeping into his voice. "I'm going home," I said calmly. "Ethan, we are over." He rushed forward and grabbed my arm tightly. "Just because of Victoria? I can explain! That’s all in the past, I swear!" I violently shook his hand off and sneered. "The past?" "Then why has your password been her birthday for seven years? Why did you rush to the airport the second she landed? Why did you never, not once, talk about marriage with me?" The rapid-fire questions left him utterly speechless. "I gave you so many chances, Ethan," I whispered, my voice finally cracking. "Even yesterday, I was waiting for you to tell me the truth. But you chose to lie to my face." He took a miserable step backward. "I admit... I messed up," he muttered, his head hanging low. "But Chloe, what we had for seven years was real! I loved you!" "Loved me?" I laughed, though tears finally spilled over my cheeks. "And what about now?" He remained silent. His silence was the loudest answer he could have ever given. "Take care of yourself," I said, grabbing the handle of my suitcase and heading for the door. "Don't go!" He lunged forward, wrapping his arms around me from behind, clinging to me desperately. "Give me one more chance, Chloe! I promise I'll block Victoria. I'll never speak to her again! Let's just start over!" This was the very first time in seven years that he had ever begged me like this. But I simply reached back and peeled his fingers off me, one by one. "Goodbye, Ethan." ---
