On the eve of our school's Homecoming Gala, I watched Lilah Bennett, the most popular girl in school, sneak Carter Stone's driver's license into a stage confetti cannon. She smiled with pure smugness. "Once Carter realizes his ID is missing, I'll pull it out and save the day!" "He'll be so grateful, he won't be able to resist me!" In my past life, I panicked, worried the cannon blast would blow his ID to shreds. I sprinted into the auditorium and pulled it out just in time. Instead of thanking me, Lilah broke down in tears, telling everyone I was jealous and deliberately ruined her romantic surprise. And Carter believed every word. He cornered me on the school rooftop, pushed me over the edge with his own hands, and sneered as I fell. "Why do you always have to ruin everything, Harper?! Lilah just wanted to give me a surprise, and you ruined it!" "People like you don't deserve to go to college with me! You deserve to die!" Now, I was back. Standing outside the auditorium doors, I watched through the window as Lilah slipped Carter's driver's license into the confetti cannon. I didn't stop her. I quietly turned off my phone, turned around, and walked away. This time, I was going to save someone. Myself. Backstage at the gala, Lilah giggled, surrounded by her usual clique of minions. They showered her with compliments. "Lilah, that's such a brilliant idea! Carter is going to be completely obsessed with you!" "Totally! You two are literally made for each other." "Who cares about Harper? She does nothing but study all day. Boring loser!" Lilah gave a coy smile, unable to hide the gleam of triumph in her eyes. She pulled the ID out of Carter's backpack. After double-checking his name, she stuffed it into the barrel of the stage confetti cannon. "When Carter panics because he can't take the SAT tomorrow, I'll swoop in and rescue him!" Her voice grew even more excited. "He'll be so indebted to me!" Their giggles echoed through the hall. Outside the door, I quietly lowered my hand from the doorknob. The terrifying sensation of freefall from the rooftop in my past life was still fresh in my mind. I had tried to save Carter's future out of the goodness of my heart, only to be branded the villain standing in the way of their romance. In this life, I chose to mind my own business. Just as I was about to walk away, Lilah gasped. "Wait, isn't this Harper's ID?" Lilah sounded thrilled. She grabbed my driver's license from the desk and waved it around. "Harper always acts so high and mighty. I wonder if she'll cry like a baby when she can't find her ID tomorrow?!" She batted her eyelashes at her friends. "Carter always calls her a tomboy who never sheds a tear." "I bet a hundred bucks she breaks down crying tomorrow morning!" My chest tightened. She had resented me all along and was waiting for a chance to sabotage me. Her minions clapped and cheered. "She totally deserves it! I'm bringing my phone tomorrow to record her pathetic face." "Then we'll blast the video across our SnapChat group! Let's see how smug she looks then!" One by one, the girls left, leaving Lilah alone in the room. She stared down at the two IDs in her hands, a vicious smirk curling on her lips. A second later, she ripped my ID into tiny shreds without hesitation. She crumpled the scraps into a ball and carelessly tossed them into a cardboard box filled with discarded scrap paper. Lilah was so drunk on her own petty thrill that she didn't even notice what she had actually destroyed. She hadn't just torn up my ID. She had torn up Carter's too. No wonder Carter always fondly called Lilah a "ditzy cute girl." Yeah. Plain stupid was more like it. I slipped away from the backstage area without making a sound, went straight to the school admin office, and requested an immediate duplicate ID. This time, I wasn't going to clean up Carter's mess. I backed up the audio recording I had just captured on my phone, and then I went home. Tomorrow was the SAT, right after the gala. The school had given us the afternoon off. Students attending the dance could stay, while everyone else was free to head home early. I had my mom call the school office, collected my study guides from the classroom, and headed straight home. Soon after, Carter texted me on SnapChat. Harper, didn't we agree to watch the showcase together? Why the hell did you run home on your own?! I left him on read. A few minutes later, another message popped up. Don't act like a spoiled brat with me. Lilah's working hard backstage all by herself. I'm staying here with her. I glanced at the screen coldly, then continued organizing my test prep materials. Carter and I grew up as next-door neighbors. Everyone always joked that we were high school sweethearts bound to end up together. To me, he was just a regular childhood friend. Yet he convinced himself that I was secretly in love with him, acting like the world revolved around his needs. Whenever I turned down his invitations because I had my own schedule, he would intentionally flirt with another girl right in front of me to make me jealous. Honestly, it was pathetic. While I was reviewing my notes, Lilah posted a photo to the senior class SnapChat group. In the picture, she and Carter were standing backstage, heads leaned close together as they looked over the program schedule. Lilah was leaning heavily against his shoulder, radiating smug intimacy. She paired it with a flirty caption: Setting up the gala with my favorite partner is way more fun than doing it alone~ A bunch of classmates instantly replied with heart emojis, hyping them up. One drama-seeker even tagged me: Harper, your boy's getting stolen right out from under you. Carter replied within seconds: Cut the crap. Harper and I are just neighbors. I typed my response right away: Exactly. Just neighbors. Congratulations to the happy couple. The class group chat fell dead silent for a moment. Carter sent an irritated message: Harper, stop with the passive-aggressive attitude. Lilah quickly jumped in, pretending to play the peacemaker: Did Harper get jealous? The gala isn't over yet! We've got fruit platters and wine set up in the backstage lounge. Everyone, come join the party! Harper, don't be so uptight. You have to come! A few classmates started chiming in: Whoa, really? Lilah, you're an angel! I just finished my dance routine and I'm starving! Lilah posted a photo of the lounge table: There's plenty of snacks and red wine here! Treat yourselves, guys! Someone hesitated: Wait... we have the SAT tomorrow morning. Is drinking tonight really a good idea? Carter immediately chimed in with an authoritative tone: A glass or two actually helps relieve exam stress. It relaxes your brain. With Carter's backing, the hesitant ones instantly changed their tune: If Carter says so, we're definitely coming! Who knows, maybe we'll score even higher tomorrow! Lilah usually maintained decent grades by copying other people's homework. With her real abilities, getting into a decent college was a pipe dream. She didn't care about the exam, so she wanted to drag the whole class down with her. I wasn't about to interfere. If I tried to stop them, they would only turn on me and blame me for ruining their fun. I sent one final message: Not coming. Then, I left the group chat without a second thought. I had zero interest in keeping in touch with these toxic people anyway. Seconds later, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from Carter. His voice crackled through the speaker, thick with fury. "Harper, do you really have to embarrass me like this? Lilah was nice enough to invite you, and you treat her like garbage?!" Behind him, Lilah's whiny voice drifted through the line. "If Harper isn't coming, she's probably secretly studying at home all by herself..." Carter immediately took on a commanding tone. "Harper, the test is tomorrow morning. Drop the Miss Goody Two-Shoes act!" I had always thought that growing up together meant our bond had some real weight to it. Turns out, it was worthless. My voice remained ice-cold. "I need to prepare for the test. Have fun at your party." If you want to gamble your future away, go ahead. I hope you enjoy every second of it. Carter went silent for a few seconds before snarling. "Fine! Since you want to act so high and mighty, don't expect me to give a damn about you ever again!" I hung up and picked up my flashcards. In this life, I was aiming for the top Ivy League schools. At 11:30 PM, I put away my notes and got ready for bed. Before sleeping, I saw Carter post a photo on his story. A bunch of them were clinking wine glasses, faces flushed with alcohol. Almost everyone from our honors class was there, except me. His caption read: Forget the party-pooper. It feels amazing to be surrounded by the people who actually matter. The next morning, I arrived at the SAT test center right on time. It wasn't early, but half our class was still missing. The ones who did show up looked pale and exhausted, clearly suffering from severe hangovers. Carter was repeatedly rubbing his temples, grimacing in pain. The gates to the testing center opened, and students began lining up to show their admission tickets and photo IDs. The moment I stepped into line, Carter grabbed Lilah's hand and shoved past me, cutting right in front. Lilah turned around and stuck her tongue out at me. "Sorry, Harper! We want to get in first!" I glanced at Carter's backpack, staying quiet. Carter took my silence as submission. He gave me a smug, arrogant grin, pulling out a white envelope from his front pocket. "Harper, Lilah and I are going to the same college. You better not try to bully her in the future." The next second, the smirk on his face froze completely.Carter tore through his backpack, his face turning paler by the second. "It's not here." He dumped his pencil case onto the ground, ripping through every single zipper and compartment. Nothing. The smug golden boy had vanished, replaced by an absolute panic. "How is it not here?!" "I put it right in this envelope!" He snapped his head up, glaring at the people around him like a madman. "Who touched my ID?!" His voice dripped with raw panic and fury. I almost laughed out loud. In my previous life, I tried to save his future, and he murdered me for it. Now that his ID was actually gone, he was losing his damn mind. His eyes locked onto me, burning with accusation. "Harper!" "Was it you?!" I raised an eyebrow. "Was what me?" "My ID! Did you hide it?!" He stormed toward me, his voice booming across the courtyard. "You threw a tantrum yesterday because of Lilah!" "Who else would touch my stuff?!" A harsh laugh bubbled in my throat. Lilah was the one who stuffed his ID into a confetti cannon. And now I was the scapegoat? Lilah bit her lip, stepping forward with wide, innocent eyes. "Carter, please don't say that..." "I... I think I saw Harper earlier..." She stopped mid-sentence, looking terrified. Carter demanded immediately. "What did you see?!" Lilah hesitated, lowering her voice so everyone nearby could hear. "I think I saw her walking toward the auditorium holding your ID yesterday..." The courtyard went dead silent. Every single eye turned on me. I looked at her, almost wanting to applaud her performance. Saw me? The person who shoved the ID into the cannon was her. "Lilah, are you sure you saw me?" I asked calmly. Her eyes welled with tears, and she vigorously shook her head. "I just saw you walking that way with something in your hand." "I wasn't completely sure." "But Carter's ID is really gone! I couldn't just stand by and say nothing..." She gave a fragile, heartbroken sniffle. "Harper, if you took it, please just give it back to Carter. We're all classmates. No one will blame you!" Whispers erupted through the crowd. "Wait, did Harper really take it?" "Didn't they have a huge fight yesterday?" "Losing an ID on SAT day is insane..." I listened to the murmurs, the faint smile on my lips turning razor-sharp. The commotion quickly drew the attention of our school's proctor and test coordinator. Mrs. Frost, our college counselor, hurried over with her brow furrowed, pointing a finger directly in my face. "Harper Vance! Hand over Carter's ID right this second!" "What good are your high grades if you spend the morning of the SAT sabotaging other students?!" Mrs. Frost had always favored the boys, and on top of that, she was Lilah's maternal aunt. She had made my life hell all year. During the school track meet, when nobody wanted to run the long-distance race, she put my name down without my consent, claiming it was "for the honor of the class." Whenever the boys wanted to skip class, she signed their hall passes with a smile. But when my grandmother passed away, she sneered, asking, "What does your grandmother dying have to do with your schoolwork?" and refused to excuse my absence. Even the academic scholarship I rightfully earned was handed to Lilah under bogus pretexts. Now, she deliberately raised her voice, drawing a huge crowd of parents and students. I locked eyes with her, speaking the exact words I had swallowed for years. "Condemning me before you even investigate? Are you sure you're fit to keep your job, Mrs. Frost?" Her face flushed crimson with rage. "You!" "Enough!" Carter cut me off with an icy bark. "Harper, my ID is missing! This isn't about your hurt feelings!" He glared at me, his eyes practically spitting fire. "Give it back right now." "Or don't blame me for forgetting our years of friendship!" I looked at him, feeling nothing but cold disgust. Friendship? When you shoved me off that rooftop in my past life, you didn't give a damn about friendship. I didn't bother arguing. Instead, I pulled out my phone and hit play on the video I recorded backstage yesterday. The blood drained from Lilah's face in an instant. Before she could lunge to block the screen, I held my phone high for the crowd to see. The video clearly showed Lilah shoving Carter's ID straight into the confetti cannon. "Take a good look, everyone. Who took the ID?!" Gasps rippled through the crowd as disgusted looks landed squarely on Lilah. Unable to handle the shame, Lilah collapsed onto the pavement, bursting into theatrical sobs. "Wahhh... Harper, why do you have to humiliate me in front of everyone?!" "I just wanted to surprise the boy I love! What did I do wrong?!" She cried like a delicate flower battered by the rain. "Carter, I didn't leave it in there! I was scared the cannon would tear the plastic, so I took it back out right after!" Carter's heart instantly melted. He pulled Lilah into his arms, patting her back soothingly. "I forgive you, Lilah. Don't cry." Then, he whipped his head around, glaring at me like he wanted to murder me. "Harper, you did this on purpose! You deliberately humiliated Lilah in front of all these people! Apologize to her right now!"I let out an incredulous laugh. The sheer audacity and double standards of this boy were staggering. I crossed my arms, looking around the gathering crowd. "You publicly accuse me of theft, and when you're proven wrong, you demand I apologize to her? What kind of warped logic is that?" Thankfully, there were plenty of sane people in the crowd, and they immediately spoke up for me. "Seriously! That girl was just standing in line minding her own business, and he started screaming at her for no reason." "Are they trying to mess up her head before the test? Smell their breath. They reek of alcohol! Who gets drunk the night before the SAT?!" "And that Lilah girl was clearly trying to frame her earlier, and now she's playing the victim!" Seeing the tide turn against her niece, Mrs. Frost cleared her throat hurriedly to defuse the situation. "All right, all right! It was just a misunderstanding. You're all classmates. Let's not make a scene." "The SAT is the priority today. Everyone, get inside the testing hall!" Carter shot me a venomous glare, as if saying, You got lucky this time. With the drama temporarily settled, the line began moving quickly. Carter turned to Lilah, holding his hand out with a relieved smile. "Lilah, we're up next. Give me my ID." Lilah tilted her chin up playfully. "Nope! You have to read the special note I wrote for you before I give it back!" Carter chuckled softly, playing along. "My bad, my bad. I'll read it right now." Right there in front of the testing hall, he opened the folded love letter she handed him and began reading it with a silly grin. The surrounding students exchanged bewildered, disgusted looks. Are you serious? We're about to take the SAT, and you're reading a love letter in the check-in line? Five painful minutes crawled by before Carter finally finished reading. Lilah smirked, finally satisfied. She unzipped her backpack and began rummaging through it. A few seconds later, her hands froze. A flicker of sheer panic crossed her face. A terrible dread struck Carter's chest, wiping the smile clean off his face. "Lilah... stop messing around. Give me the ID!" Cold sweat beaded on Lilah's forehead. She couldn't say a word. Carter completely lost it. He snatched her backpack out of her hands, dumping everything onto the sidewalk. Lipstick, notebooks, pens, perfume bottles... There was no ID. Only Lilah's own photo ID lay on the concrete. Carter's eyes turned bloodshot. He grabbed Lilah's wrist with brutal force. "Lilah Bennett! WHERE IS MY ID?!" Terrified by his manic rage, Lilah trembled, stammering. "I... I think I might have accidentally left it at home..." "Carter, don't yell at me! You're scaring me... I didn't mean to!" Carter's world shattered. All the color drained from his face as he dropped to his knees on the pavement. "Lilah... of all the things to mess with, you messed with my SAT ID?!" He roared in her face. "If you know you're an idiot, STOP DOING STUPID THINGS!" Right at that moment, a group of our classmates stumbled up to the gate, looking like walking corpses. They marched straight toward Lilah with furious expressions. "Lilah! It's all your fault for pushing us to drink last night! I woke up feeling like my head was being split open with an axe! How the hell am I supposed to test like this?!" "Same here! If my parents hadn't literally dragged me out of bed, I would have slept right through the exam!" "You're a walking curse! Everyone who hung out with you is completely screwed today. Only Harper avoided this disaster!" Their faces were a toxic mix of hangover exhaustion and volcanic rage. When the parents in the crowd heard that these kids drank before the SAT, they started openly condemning Lilah as a reckless menace.

Frost?" I let out an incredulous laugh.
