第1章
My childhood best friend, Jake, and my brother, Ryan, both fell for my roommate Chloe.
When it came out that she'd been stringing along half a dozen guys at once, they came running back, red-eyed, swearing they'd been bewitched.
I forgave them. Clumsily, quietly. I even felt lucky.
Chloe had never missed a chance to flaunt their attention, to watch me squirm. But now they were back—which meant I hadn't truly been abandoned.
Until a stream of bullet comments drifted across my vision.
【Poor Sarah. She still thinks they actually care about her.】
【They're just using her. Being nice to her is their way of making Chloe jealous enough to give in.】
【After half a year of this, once they've made her so dependent she can't imagine life without them, they'll drop her together.】
【Only then will she realize she was just bait in their revenge game from the very beginning.】
I froze. My phone buzzed—I'd been added to a group chat.
Jake, who'd just walked me to my dorm with that familiar, tender warmth, now typed like a stranger, She's got too much pride. Won't be long now.
The nicer I am to Sarah, the more it'll cut her. And when I go back to her later, call it a lesson learned.
The others in the group piled on.
【So this is you teaching Chloe a lesson? Sounds more like you're taking advantage of Sarah being a pushover.】
【Exactly. You just want Chloe jealous but won't admit it.】
Jake's reply floated up, careless, So what? Sarah clings to me. And it's convenient she happens to share a room with Chloe.
My thumb hovered over the screen. My chest tightened. Then I saw the group name—and it hit like a slap.
【Operation Make Chloe Jealous】
A second later, someone must have realized. I was kicked out. The red notification vanished without a trace.
I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the grocery box Jake had carried up for me. He'd been out of breath after four flights of stairs. Before he left, he'd turned back and said, "Make sure you actually use them, dummy."
Back then, that had made me feel warm all over.
The comments flickered again, 【Tonight, Jake's going to fake a confession to Sarah. Big scene—the whole building will see.】
【But the second Chloe shows a hint of jealousy, he'll panic and clarify it was all a joke. Sarah will be laughed at by the entire school.】
My phone lit up. Jake, as if nothing had happened, Oops, accidentally added you to our class group. Sorry if that bothered you.
There's a new movie out. Wanna go with me?
I typed and deleted, typed and deleted. I didn't say yes like I always did.
Finally, I sent, "No bother. Can't go."
"Why?"
"Paper."
"Since when are you the studious type?"
He followed with a laughing emoji. I didn't answer. I shoved the phone under my pillow and pulled the blanket over my head.
If not for those comments, I'd have believed every bit of it was real.
We'd known each other for over a decade. I never once thought he'd use me as a prop to make someone else jealous.
The phone stayed quiet. I thought he'd given up.
But less than ten minutes later, his voice erupted from below, "Sarah!"
"Sarah! Get down here!"
"If you don't come, I'll keep yelling!"
Across the room, Chloe turned over, her face unreadable. "Your friend's calling."
Another roommate stuck her head out, annoyed. "Sarah! Someone's shouting for you—it's so loud!"
I threw off the covers, shoved my feet into shoes, and ran downstairs. The comments said he was planning a fake confession tonight. If I didn't show, he'd actually go through with it.
I pushed open the apartment door. He was leaning against a lamppost, grinning, just turning off his phone. The last thing on the screen, before it went dark—Chloe's photo.
"What?" I asked.
He walked over, laying on that familiar wounded tone. "You talked to me for two hours last night, and now you're acting like a stranger?"
The comments rose up,
【That two-hour call? He spent the whole time scrolling through Chloe's Instagram.】
【Didn't hear a single word Sarah said.】
Last night, I'd told him my grandmother was getting worse. I wanted to go home and see her. My voice had cracked. He'd just hummed "uh-huh" the whole way through.
I'd thought he was listening. "So... what do you think about what I told you?"
Jake blinked, scratching his head. "Huh... you said a lot. Which part?"
"My grandma."
"Oh... that." He laughed. "Right. Yeah. That's good."
My grandmother was in the hospital, and he said that's good. I gripped my sleeve and said nothing.
"Sarah."
Another voice came from my right.
Ryan stepped out of a black SUV and crossed the pavement, planting himself between me and Jake.
"What are you shouting about outside the dorms this late?"
He glared at Jake. "You scared her."
Then he turned to me, voice dropping. "You okay? If he pulls this again, tell me. I'll handle it."
The comments scrolled,
【Sigh. Even her brother isn't here for her.】
【He actually resents Sarah. She's too soft—he thinks she's just a burden.】
【He only showed up today because he heard Chloe's dance club is performing this weekend.】
Jake snorted. "You following me?"
"Following you? I don't need your permission to check on my sister."
They faced off over me—neither one actually looking at me. I knew what they were really doing, watching each other, making sure the other didn't slip away to find Chloe.
"I've got things to do. I'm leaving."

I turned, ready to escape.
Ryan caught my arm. "Don't go up. Come eat with me."
"Not hungry."
"I'm heading out of town in a couple days. I'll miss your birthday." He lowered his voice. "Let's have dinner tonight. Call it an early celebration."
He remembered my birthday. I hesitated.
Before I could answer, Jake had already opened the back door of the SUV and climbed in. "I'm hungry too. Let's all go."
Ryan's jaw tightened, but he didn't kick him out.
Half-pulled, half-pushed, I ended up in the passenger seat.
At the mall, Ryan walked on my right, Jake on my left. On the escalator, Ryan tugged me behind him. "Stay close. Ignore him."
Jake's ears were sharp. "Oh, and you're such a great brother? When she had a fever of a hundred and three, where were you?"
"I was the one who took her to the ER that night."
Ryan's step faltered.
Jake pressed, "You were having dinner with Chloe's roommate, weren't you? Pumping her for info on Chloe's finals."
The air went still for a moment. I looked down. Jake had come that night—but not for me. He'd been looking for Chloe's notes and spotted me leaning against the wall in the hallway.
I opened my mouth to say it didn't matter, that I'd stopped caring. But they were already arguing again.
I slipped away into a nearby coffee shop, hoping for a moment alone.
Ryan followed in one step. "Where are you going?"
"Coffee."
He pulled me back. "We'll order together later."
Once again, I was caught between them. They walked and bickered the whole way, voices low but sharp.
I tried again, veering off to the right.
Jake blocked me. "This way. The restaurant's ahead."
I couldn't get out. I pressed my lips together and tried to make myself invisible.
The comments whispered up,
【They're not really fighting over Sarah.】
【They brought her out tonight just so they'd have an excuse to invite Chloe.】
Right on cue, Ryan pulled out his phone, as if the thought had just struck him, "It'd be more fun with more people. Why don't you ask your roommate to join?"
I didn't answer.
Jake jumped in immediately, "Yeah! Chloe's closest to you anyway. Invite her. One more person doesn't matter."
They fought about everything except this one thing. On this, they were perfectly, disgustingly aligned.
"Fine."
I texted Chloe, My brother and Jake want to take you to dinner.
She replied instantly, Address.
I put my phone away. Both men moved at once—Ryan smoothed his collar, Jake ran a hand through his hair. The anger from moments ago vanished. Neither walked beside me anymore.
I trailed three steps behind, watching them huddle over their phones, picking a restaurant.
My chest ached. But underneath it, something strange surfaced, relief.
Good. Things that were never meant for me—better to see them clearly now.

The restaurant was on the third floor of the mall.
Chloe arrived before us—white T-shirt, jeans, high ponytail, a little star hairpin clipped in place.
Ryan and Jake both quickened their pace as they entered the private booth. I followed behind, squeezed into the seat by the aisle.
Chloe looked at me and smiled. "Happy birthday, Sarah." As if she'd just remembered I was supposed to be the reason we were there.
Before the food came, Jake pulled a small box from his pocket and slid it to me. "Early birthday present."
I opened it. A silver bracelet with a tiny star charm. Pretty.
I'm allergic to most metals. Last summer I wore a bracelet and broke out in a rash from wrist to ankle—itched for over a week. He'd asked what was wrong then. I told him I was allergic. He'd just said, "Oh."
Ryan pulled a bottle of perfume from a paper bag. "From your brother."
Vanilla. He knew I didn't like it. Once, in his car, the air freshener was vanilla-scented. I sat through the whole ride with a pounding headache. When he asked me about it the next day, I told him I couldn't stand sweet scents. He said he'd switch it out. He never did.
The comments surfaced,
【That star bracelet is a direct match to one in Chloe's saved collection.】
【The vanilla perfume is the brand Chloe always wears.】
【Both gifts—bought with someone else entirely in mind.】
I placed the box and the paper bag neatly side by side and forced a smile. "Thank you. I love them."
Jake glanced at Chloe, then piled a huge chunk of meat onto my plate. "Eat more. You're too skinny. You're not taking care of yourself."
Ryan poured me juice. "Go easy on the spicy stuff. Your stomach's weak."
They competed to heap food on my plate—steak, shrimp, more steak—but their eyes kept sliding back to Chloe.
Chloe didn't spare them a glance. She ate her meal quietly, didn't look up once. The eagerness on their faces dimmed, little by little.
Nobody spoke for the rest of the meal.
When we finally left the booth, Ryan said flatly, "I'll drive you all back."
Jake cut in, "My car's in B2. We're all going to campus anyway. I'll take them."
They both looked at Chloe, waiting.
Chloe pulled out her phone. "No need. You two take Sarah."
And she walked off without looking back.
Ryan dropped his hand, his voice suddenly cold. "Take a cab, Sarah. I've got something to deal with."
Jake snorted and strode off too. "Just remembered I have a date."
The elevator landing was empty but for me. The bracelet and perfume hung heavy in my hands.
I pulled out my phone to order a ride.
"Sarah."
Chloe had doubled back. She leaned against the wall, arms crossed, a mocking smile playing at her lips.
"Picking up what other people throw away—does that make you feel good?"
She didn't wait for an answer. She turned and walked toward the elevator.
I stood there for a long moment. Then the elevator arrived. I stepped in and pressed B1.
Waiting for a cab outside the mall, the vanilla scent drifted up from the paper bag. I set it on top of a nearby trash can. Paused. Then picked it back up—because if he asked later, saying I'd thrown it away felt like too much of a confession.
