Silvermoon Pack's big training day. I gritted through the shift fever and the blood sickness—still hit the dirt anyway. My Alpha mate Lucian Greyback didn't even reach for me. He handed the only rest pass to his childhood friend Anya Silverfang instead. "She's got asthma. You don't. Get up and fall in." Anya piled on: "Luna was in the group chat betting she'd fake a collapse to skip the run." Lucian bought it. He hauled me into that weapons shed, 122 degrees and climbing. "Serena, you're treating training like a joke. Stay in there and think about it." I dropped onto the rust-caked floor, blood already coating my throat. "Lucian... I'm not faking... please, let me out—" "Stay until the heat burns that nonsense out of your head." He walked. Didn't look back. Blood kept coming, thick and hot. Between the heat and the bleeding, my heart gave out. But in the dark, the wolf inside me opened her eyes. My Alpha? You're about to pay for every single thing you did to me.

Between the heat and the bleeding, my heart gave out. But in the dark, the wolf inside me opened her eyes. My Alpha? You're about to pay for every single thing you did to me. --- Blood. Still coming. Hot and thick. I stared at the line of light under the door. My heartbeat slowed down. Slower. Slower. One last beat. Then nothing. When I opened my eyes again, I was floating. I looked down. There was my body—pale, twisted, crumpled in a pool of blood. Not moving. Not far off, Lucian was holding a big piece of hide over Anya, blocking the sun. "Let her starve for half a day. See if she still fakes it after that." I opened my mouth to scream. Nothing came out. Gamma Liam stepped forward from the formation. He had a water bottle in his hand. He hesitated, then walked up to Lucian. "Alpha… it's way too hot in there. Maybe we could at least pass some water in to Luna?" Lucian turned. His Alpha aura hit Liam like a punch. "Pack drills aren't a game. Rules are rules." "She made a bet about faking sick to get out of training. She can live with the consequences." His voice was quiet. But every word hit like a hammer. "If anyone feels bad for her? Go ahead. Get in there with her." Silence. A few young wolves had been about to speak. They shut their mouths fast. Didn't even breathe too loud. Anya gasped behind him. She put a hand to her chest, scrunching her face up, breathing hard. "Alpha, don't get so mad—you scared me…" She leaned into his arm, all syrupy sweet. "Honestly, Luna's being so dramatic. She's not even hurt. She's probably in there taking a nap right now. You spoil her too much." Lucian looked down at her. Gave her back a pat. "Relax. I know what I'm doing." Then he walked over to the tool pile, grabbed a rusted iron bar and a heavy silver padlock. He jammed the bar through the loop on the handle—locked it solid. Then he looped the silver padlock around the handle and the outer ring. Wrapped the chain twice. Click. Locked tight. The heat inside kept climbing. I hung there in the air, staring down at the body in the corner. Skin gray. Training gear soaked in sweat and blood, plastered to my body. The smell of blood and rust kept getting thicker. He dusted off his hands and pulled out his phone. Our chat was still open on the screen. The last message was the one I'd sent him last night—the report from Pack Hospital. Big bold letters: SEVERE BLOOD SICKNESS. Lucian stared at it for a couple seconds. Snorted. "Serena. You can't even shift. What are you faking a shift fever for?" He deleted it. Didn't even blink. Put his phone away and turned to face the young wolves on the training ground. "Nobody goes near this shed until drills are over." "Let her bake that attitude out of her head." "She can come out when she's ready to admit she was wrong." He was sure I was just throwing a tantrum. Sure that if he pushed hard enough, I'd fold—just like I always did. Belly down. Throat out. Begging. But Lucian— Dead wolves don't apologize.

The sun hit dead center. Beat down on the training field. Two hours. The young wolves in formation had shaky legs, sweat running down from behind their ears. None of them moved. Nobody dared. Alpha hadn't said a word. Move, and you were asking for it. A female in the front row raised her hand. She pointed at the gap under the rusted shed door. Her face went white. Her wolf eyes blew wide. "Alpha… there's red stuff coming out…" The formation erupted. A few bold males stretched their necks forward to see. At the bottom of that iron door, thick dark red liquid was seeping out. Slowly. But steady. On the hot concrete, it dried fast. The edges turned into this weird dark brown crust. The young wolves crowded around. Voices rose like a dam broke. Anya pinched her nose and stepped back. Whole face scrunched up. Voice went sharp. "Oh my god, Luna is so childish! She popped a blood bag in there just to get Alpha to feel sorry for her?" "Who's she putting this show on for? It's disgusting—I think I'm gonna be sick—" The young wolves around her paused. The tension that had been building loosened up—just a little. A few started muttering. How Luna had gone way too far this time. Dragged the whole pack out here to bake in the sun for some stupid stunt. Lucian's face went dark. He walked up to the iron door, looked down at that half-dried dark red puddle on the ground. "Serena. You done yet?" His voice was all impatience. Like a blade scraping bone. "Drop the pathetic act. You think smearing blood around is gonna make me go soft?" Nothing from inside. Silence. Lucian's mouth twisted into a cold smirk. He lifted his leg. Kicked the iron door. BANG! The whole shed rattled. Rust flakes rained down. I hung in the air, watching it all clear as day— That body inside, the one slumped against the door—the impact knocked it straight over. Thud. A dull crack. My head slammed into the rusted metal shelf behind the door. The kind of sound that makes a wolf's fur stand up. The noise carried right through the iron. Lucian heard it. He didn't think anything was wrong. He laughed. "See? Still got enough energy to throw stuff around and throw a fit." He turned. Swept his gaze across the field. "Guess she hasn't learned her lesson yet. Need to turn the heat up in there." He pointed at a few young males at random. "Go grab those insulated hides from storage." The wolves he'd pointed at froze. Looked at each other. None of them moved. "You deaf?" Lucian's voice dropped. His Alpha command pressed down like a mountain. Every single one of them lowered their heads. Fast. Who would dare cross the Alpha? They ran to storage with their heads down. Came back a few minutes later dragging a pile of heavy, stinking old hides. "Block every single vent up there." Lucian pointed at the few narrow gaps in the iron roof. The only places air could still get through. The young males gritted their teeth and climbed up on the stone blocks. Laid those old hides over the louvers, layer after layer. Lashed them down tight with rough sinew rope. That was it. The last bit of circulating air was gone. I threw myself at those hides like a mad thing. Transparent arms clawing. Tearing. My fingers passed right through. I couldn't touch a thing. The temperature inside that shed spiked. Like someone had lit a fire. The smell of blood kept getting thicker in that sealed-up space. So heavy you could almost taste it. Outside, Lucian looked up at the vents—completely blocked. He nodded. Satisfied. Then he turned back to face the terrified young wolves on the training field. Raised an eyebrow. Lazy. Smug. Those wolf eyes of his were full of certainty. Certain I was faking. Certain I was acting out. Certain that all he had to do was push hard enough and I'd break. "Wanted some quiet time, did she?" His voice wasn't loud. But that Alpha weight behind it made every wolf in the formation flinch. "Then let her sit in peace." "Burn every last bit of that spoiled attitude right out of her." Just then, a harsh roar came crashing in from the other end of the training ground. "What the hell is going on here?! You think training's over?!"

Elder Vance rushed across the field under the blazing sun. He took one look at the scattered formation, then his eyes landed on that dark brown puddle. His brow furrowed deep. "Alpha, what's going on? Where's Luna?" Lucian didn't move. His voice was flat. "In there. Thinking about what she did." Vance's face shifted. He stepped closer. Glanced at the locked door. Then at the puddle. "Alpha…" His voice wavered. "This kind of heat—locking Luna in there with no air—something could go wrong. Maybe we should open the door?" Lucian looked down at him. On paper, Vance was his equal. Elder rank. Council seat. But Alpha was the one who really ran things. Vance's authority only went so far. In front of Lucian, he was just a mouth that could talk—nothing more. "Elder Vance," Lucian said, not even flinching. "I'm the Alpha of Silvermoon. I'm in charge of these drills. This is Pack discipline. You should stay out of it." Vance clenched his fists. Let out a low sigh. "I get that rules are rules… but Luna has that blood sickness. I saw the report from Pack Hospital." "Just let me open the door. Check on her. That's all I'm asking." Lucian let out a cold laugh. He pulled the silver padlock key from his belt, twirled it between his fingers. All the young wolves' eyes locked onto it. Then he let go. The key dropped straight into the storm drain grate beside them—swallowed up by the dark below. Vance froze. His lips trembled a few times before he managed to speak. "Alpha… what are you doing…" Lucian's voice went cold as iron. "We'll deal with it after drills. Have Wolf Guard bring bolt cutters." "If she still hasn't learned to admit she was wrong by then? She can stay in there longer." He lifted his gaze, looked past Vance, and locked onto that door. "This Luna your Council handpicked—she's deliberately defying the whole Pack." His tone was flat. "I'm disciplining her for you. You're welcome." Vance's fists stayed clenched. In the end, he didn't say a word. He turned and walked away, heavy steps carrying him toward the Watchtower. The young wolves couldn't hold it anymore. The formation erupted with growls and curses. "Luna, just give up already! Because of you, the whole Pack's baking out here!" "She wants to drag us all down with her!" "Faking death and dragging the whole Pack down with her—she's not even wolf enough to deserve a collar!" Wave after wave. I floated in the air, watching Vance get smaller and smaller. He was the Pack's senior Elder. But when Alpha said no, he couldn't push back. I watched those young wolves—the ones who used to smile at me—lean forward and scream curses at my dead body. I watched that same cold, smug smirk on Lucian's face. The one that never left. I used to think if I was just a little better, a little quieter, Lucian would one day look at me like I mattered. I thought that medical report might buy me even a sliver of pity. Now I know. My life never meant more to him than one lie from Anya's mouth.
