I got called down to the police station in the middle of the night. My subordinate, Chloe, was huddled under a man's trench coat, shivering. She jabbed a finger in my face and shrieked: "It was her—her husband did this to me!" "He forced himself on me, beat me black and blue. I'm going to make sure he rots in prison!" I got called down to the police station in the middle of the night. My subordinate, Chloe, was huddled under a man's trench coat, shivering. She jabbed a finger in my face and shrieked: "It was her—her husband did this to me!" "He forced himself on me, beat me black and blue. I'm going to make sure he rots in prison!" The detective looked at me with pure contempt. I was completely thrown. Twenty-eight and never married. What husband? I opened my mouth to explain. The next second, a female officer shoved the door open and rushed in: "Detective, we did recover male DNA from Chloe's body." "The lab is rushing the database match now." Chloe stumbled toward me: "Vivian, what do you have to say for yourself? You covered for that pervert of a husband—both of you deserve to burn in hell!" Something suddenly clicked. Unhurried, I picked up my paper cup and took a slow sip of water. I set the cup back down and looked at the detective. "Would you mind pulling up my marriage records first?" Chloe's sobbing stopped mid-breath. The detective frowned. "Meaning?" "Meaning I've never been married. I don't even have a boyfriend." Chloe immediately whipped out her phone and slapped a screenshot down on the table. It was my HR file from the company system. Under marital status, in black and white: Married. One child. She glared at me. "Vivian, are you seriously still lying? At a time like this?" "Who at Harrison Tech doesn't know you have a husband and a kid?" "You leave at five on the dot every single day. You never come to team dinners. Any business trip, you fly back the same night." "Last month, when Mr. Harrison asked you to have dinner with a client, you said your husband was a control freak—that he'd smash things if you got home even a minute late." The detective's expression turned to ice. "Ms. Lane, I suggest you take this seriously. Shielding a suspect is a serious offense. You'll face criminal liability yourself." I rubbed the bridge of my nose. Who could have imagined it. That "bastard husband" I'd fabricated to dodge overtime had now landed me in a police station. Three years ago, when I was interviewing at Harrison Tech, HR asked whether I could accept long stretches of travel. I worried a single woman would end up treated as on-call labor—this was a Silicon Valley tech company, after all. So off the top of my head I said I was married with a kid, and had a family to look after. After I started, Mr. Harrison developed a habit of calling meetings exactly ten minutes before quitting time. To keep clocking out on time, I had to keep piling onto the story. Husband with a violent temper. Sickly child. A grandmother in her eighties with Alzheimer's, waiting at home to be spoon-fed. Thanks to that nonexistent family, in three years I hadn't attended a single pointless team-building event. Now, payback had come. "Detective, I'll admit it—the 'married with a child' thing was a lie. You can pull the county clerk's records. The registry doesn't lie." Chloe shot to her feet, still relentless: "So what you're saying is I'm playing games with my own reputation?!" "What woman would fake her own rape just to smear someone?!" "You used marriage as an excuse to deceive the company, and now you're claiming you're single—who knows which word out of your mouth is true?!" "Detective, she's the director of our division. She's got money, resources, connections all over Silicon Valley! She definitely pulled strings, doctored her records ahead of time!" I lifted my eyes and looked her over. Her hair was plastered messily against her face. There were red marks along her arms. The tears fell hard—but every accusation she flung at me landed with the precision of something rehearsed. The duty officer clicked through a few keystrokes, logging into the county clerk's records to verify. A few minutes later, he looked up. "Records confirm: Vivian Lane, twenty-eight, unmarried, no children." Chloe's sobbing cut off on the spot. She stared at the screen in disbelief. "That's impossible... this is absolutely impossible!" Then something seemed to occur to her. She dug through her phone, pulled up a video clip, and shoved it across the desk at the detective. "So she didn't file the paperwork at city hall! Big deal! You think couples can't cohabit without a marriage license?!" She tapped play on a piece of surveillance footage. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a black hoodie, a bag of trash in his hand, walking out of the elevator of my apartment building. "That's him! That man came out of your apartment! Even if he isn't your husband, he's your boyfriend! A criminal you've been hiding at home!" Chloe zoomed in. "I've been in your car. I've seen that jacket in your back seat. You're going to sit there and tell me he has nothing to do with you?!" "Vivian, what else can you possibly say?!" I looked at the familiar figure on the screen— My pupils contracted. My heart sank an inch. I finally understood why she'd been so confident asserting I had a husband. ---

Right after that, the detective queued up another feed—this one from the base of my apartment building. The timestamp was frozen less than twenty minutes before Chloe called 911. Under the amber wash of a streetlamp, a similarly tall man in a black hoodie yanked Chloe off the sidewalk and dragged her into a blind corner behind some shrubbery. Chloe's finger trembled as she pointed at the screen, crying and identifying him. "That's him! That's the man!" She whipped her head around, and the hatred in her eyes could have burned right through me. "And you, Vivian! You were his accomplice!" Chloe insisted the man who'd attacked her and the man who'd walked out of my building to take out the trash were one and the same. The silhouettes in the two clips were, admittedly, eighty percent identical. And that patch of shrubs happened to be the exact blind spot in the surveillance coverage. Half an hour later, Chloe came stumbling out of those bushes, her clothes torn into disarray, scratches and bruises already blooming clearly along her arms. The detective turned the screen toward me. "Recognize him, Ms. Lane?" "Yes." Chloe cried out immediately: "You finally admitted it! He's the one who assaulted me! Vivian, you knew he was a pervert, and you deliberately lured me under your building!" I looked at the familiar figure on the surveillance feed and didn't rush to explain. The detective pressed on. "What's his name?" "He doesn't have one." "Social Security number?" "None." Slam. The detective's palm came down hard on the interrogation table. "Ms. Lane! This is a police station, not a place for you to play word games!" I raised my eyes slowly. "Detective, I'm telling you the truth. The one who walked out of my apartment—isn't a person." "Vivian, you cold-blooded snake!" Chloe exploded: "I knew there was a reason you kept playing saint, giving me free rides to and from work—you never had good intentions! You're a pimp! A pervert's pimp! Recruiting girls for that shady man of yours!" A chill spread through me. Chloe had just graduated. Her starting salary wasn't much. The studio she rented was way out in the suburbs, more than an hour's commute each way. I'd genuinely felt for the girl—fresh out of school, life wasn't easy on her—so if I was headed the same direction, I gave her a lift to and from work. At the office, I looked out for her too, passing her plenty of easy, high-visibility projects. I never imagined my kindness would drag me into a nightmare of this magnitude. At that exact moment— The door of the interrogation room banged open. Several people who claimed to be Chloe's family burst in and started cursing me out at the top of their lungs. "You black-hearted piece of trash! Look what you did to my daughter!" "My daughter just got engaged! Now it's all been destroyed by you and that pervert of a husband!" A middle-aged woman—Chloe's mother, Diane Whitmore—was in tears and snot, lunging straight at me to yank my hair. "I'm telling you right now, this doesn't end here! A quarter of a million in damages—not a cent less! Otherwise we'll picket outside Harrison Tech! We'll make sure every soul in Silicon Valley knows what kind of woman you are! You'll never work in this industry again!" The detective stepped forward to hold them back, then swung a hard look at me: "Vivian! Tell us the true identity of the man living with you—now!" The interrogation room erupted. Cursing, wailing, screaming, all tangled together until my eardrums ached. I let out a sigh and slowly raised my head. "Fine. I'll tell you. That thing isn't a person." ---

The room went dead silent for half a second. Diane Whitmore was the first to snap back. She launched off her chair and came at me. "What the hell are you talking about?! Not a person? What is he, a ghost? Do you think we're three years old?!" The detective stood up too, his face iron-black. Clearly, he thought I was mocking law enforcement. "Vivian! This is a police station, not open-mic night!" Chloe was full-blown hysterical now. "Detective, you see her, don't you?! Her mouth is full of lies!" Chloe grabbed a ballpoint pen off the table and jammed it against the side of her own neck, right against the carotid— "Do I have to die before you'll admit it?!" Her scream was a pure ragged shriek. "Is the surveillance fake? Are the injuries on my body fake? Is the DNA inside me fake too?!" She sobbed at the detective, her eyes flooded with despair and accusation. "If you don't lock up that animal, if you don't punish that accomplice, I'll die right here in front of you!" The detective's face darkened to something like cast iron. He turned toward me, slowly. "Vivian, this is my final warning. Refuse to hand over the suspect and you'll be charged with accessory to a felony and obstruction of justice. Both counts. The consequences are on you. This is your last chance." The whole room was in chaos. The detective seized the moment, wrenched the pen out of Chloe's hand, and had Officer Bennett escort Diane out. "Vivian, we've given you the chance to explain. Now. Name, address, contact information for this man. All of it. Otherwise, we're charging you with harboring." I glanced at the clock on the wall. Two-seventeen a.m. "Go to my apartment. He's inside." The detective's eyes locked in. Then he raised a hand. "Full gear! SWAT—move out in five!" The detective had me cuffed for the time being. When the cold metal bit against my wrists, something twisted in my chest. Three years ago, I was the one who brought Chloe into Harrison Tech. When she couldn't afford downtown rent, I helped her apply for the housing stipend. When her mother was hospitalized for surgery, I quietly wired her thirty thousand dollars. I took her from intern to project lead. Now she couldn't wait to send me to prison herself. They loaded me into the back of the squad car. A dozen minutes later, we pulled up under my building. More than ten fully armored SWAT officers piled out, surrounding the whole structure. Chloe cowered behind a couple of officers, extending a shaking finger toward my window. "Right there. That animal's still inside." ---
