第1章
Three days before our Eternal Mark ceremony, my fiancé tells me he tricked me into ending our nine-year betrothal.
For vampires, an Eternal Mark binds two chosen mates together for eternity.
Adrian and I have already shared a temporary Betrothal Mark for nine years, waiting for the day we'd make it permanent.
He did it so he could marry Sophia.
The human girl from a family we'd done business with for years, whom we'd always treated like a little sister.
-
I watch our nine-year Betrothal Mark fade from my wrist until there is nothing left.
I look at Adrian.
He doesn't look surprised.
I stare at the familiar face I have loved for nine years—beautiful, pale, perfectly calm.
It takes me a long moment to force out a single word.
“What?”
Adrian meets my eyes.
“I’m going to marry Sophia.”
For a second, I wonder if I heard him wrong.
“The ritual you asked me to perform three nights ago…”
“Wasn’t a protection ritual,” Adrian says. “It was a severance ritual. I knew it would erase our Betrothal Mark.”
“You tricked me into breaking our bond?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you never would have agreed if I’d told you the truth.”
My chest tightens.
“You planned it?”
“Yes.”
His expression finally changes.
“Sophia is dying.”
I go still.
“She doesn’t have much time left,” he says. “And it’s because of me. Her only wish is to marry me before she dies.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Three years ago, she saved my life. Her body never recovered from it.”
My heart seems to stop.
That night, we had gone to meet with human business partners when vampire hunters ambushed us.
Adrian was badly wounded.
I barely managed to get us away. Once we were safe, I fed him my blood until he began to recover.
Then everything went black.
When I woke again, Adrian and Sophia were both sitting beside my bed.
A bitter laugh escapes me.
Of course.
After that night, Sophia somehow remained in our world. I never really understood why a human girl would stay so deeply involved in our vampire world.
But I never questioned it.
I liked having her around.
Whenever our families met, she was bright and sweet, always greeting us with that same cheerful smile.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped thinking of her as our business partner's daughter.
I started thinking of her as my little sister.
And because she was Sophia, I never thought twice about how close she had become to Adrian after the attack.
Not until now.
Silence.
My throat burns.
“We treated her like family, Adrian. I treated her like my sister.”
“I know.”
“And this is how you repay that? By breaking our Betrothal and marrying her behind my back?”
“She’s dying, Evelyn.”
“So you keep saying.”
“Because you’re acting like we have the same amount of time.” His voice turns colder. “We don’t. You and I have centuries. Sophia may have months.”
“And that makes this acceptable?”
“It makes it necessary.”
I can barely believe him.
“And after you marry her?”
His answer comes without hesitation.
“When she dies, I’ll come back.”
I stare at him.
“We can make another Betrothal Mark,” he continues. “And when the time is right, we’ll still complete the Eternal Mark.”
As if he is postponing a ceremony.
As if I am something he can set aside and come back for later.
“You honestly think I’ll still want you?”
His jaw tightens.
“Right now, you’re hurt.”
“No, Adrian. Right now, I finally understand what you think of me.”
He looks away.
Something still feels wrong.
Adrian’s devotion to Sophia goes far beyond guilt.
“What else are you hiding from me?”
His expression softens, almost as if he pities me.
“Evelyn, you don’t want to know.”
“Tell me.”
He is quiet for a moment.
“Her body was failing fast. Sophia was like a little sister to you, too. You wouldn’t have wanted her last wish denied, and you wouldn’t have wanted her to die. She’s my Blood Servant.”
“What did you do?”
Adrian looks straight at me.
“She isn’t just my little sister anymore.”
His voice is calm.
“She’s my Blood Servant.”
第2章
I don't let myself imagine what Adrian and Sophia must have done to form a Blood Servant bond.
The man I would have given my life for.
The girl I have treated like my own little sister.
Three years.
They have kept this from me for three years.
A Blood Servant bond is symbiotic. Each time a vampire feeds from a Blood Servant, the bond gives some of the vampire's life force back to the servant.
But I can't think about them now.
My hand settles over my stomach.
What about my baby?
This is my first child.
Whatever happens between Adrian and me, I want to keep it.
My mind is still blank when my mother's voice comes through the phone.
“Evelyn, if you're really coming home to marry Lucien Ashford, you need to decide what you're going to do about the baby. Soon.”
My fingers tighten around the phone.
I close my eyes.
“I'll figure something out.”
By the time I return to the house Adrian and I have shared for years, I think nothing else can hurt me today.
I am wrong.
The moment I walk inside, I stop.
My things are gone.
Not packed in a corner.
Gone.
The portrait Adrian and I chose together is no longer above the fireplace. The books I kept beside the sofa have disappeared. Even the flowers I always leave by the window are missing.
In their place are things I recognize immediately.
Sophia's.
Her books. Her perfume. Her photographs.
A pale blue shawl lies across my favorite chair.
It is hers.
The house doesn't look as if Sophia has moved in.
It looks as if I never lived here at all.
“Evelyn?”
Sophia appears at the top of the stairs.
She is wearing a white dress, her long hair falling loosely around her shoulders. Her face lights up with the same sweet smile I have known for years.
“You're back.”
She comes down the stairs quickly.
For one ridiculous second, she still looks like the girl I used to adore.
“Where are my things?”
Her smile falters.
“Adrian thought it would be better to make some changes before the wedding.”
My eyes move past her.
“Where are they?”
“Sent away.”
Two words.
Nine years of my life, sent away.
I look toward the stairs.
“My bedroom?”
Sophia doesn't answer.
I already know.
I walk upstairs and push open the door.
The room has been completely changed.
My clothes are gone from the closet.
My jewelry is gone from the dresser.
My books, my perfume, even the pearl-handled hairbrush Adrian gave me years ago—gone.
Sophia's dresses hang where mine used to.
Her cosmetics cover my dresser.
And beside the bed is a glass stained faintly red at the bottom.
Blood.
I turn around.
Sophia is standing in the doorway.
“I'm sorry,” she says softly. “I know this must feel sudden to you.”
Something in her voice makes me look at her again.
The sweetness is still there.
But not in her eyes.
“It didn't feel sudden to me.”
For the first time, I see her clearly.
“You've been waiting for this.”
Sophia's lips curve slightly.
“Adrian didn't want me to feel like a guest in my own home.”
My own home.
She says it deliberately.
“Three days ago, this was my home.”
“And three days from now, I'll be his wife.”
There it is.
No dying girl.
No innocent little sister.
Just Sophia.
I stare at her, almost unable to connect this woman with the human girl I once protected.
“You wanted him all along.”
Her smile returns.
“Does it matter now?”
I step toward her.
“You can have the wedding. But don't mistake his guilt for love.”
The smile vanishes.
“Guilt?”
“You said you saved him. We both know that's the only reason he's doing this.”
Sophia's smile slips.
Only for a second.
Then she reaches for the bloodstained glass beside the bed.
“Get out of my room,” I say.
She looks at me.
And lets the glass fall.
It shatters.
Before I can react, Sophia bends and closes her hand around one of the broken pieces.
Blood immediately wells in her palm.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Footsteps sound behind me.
“Evelyn!”
Adrian.
Sophia drops the shard.
Her entire expression changes.
“Adrian…”
Her voice trembles.
He sees the blood and crosses the room in an instant.
He doesn't ask what happened.
He doesn't even look at me.
He takes Sophia's injured hand in his.
“What did you do to her?”
I stare at him.
“She did that herself.”
Sophia lowers her eyes.
“I shouldn't have touched Evelyn's things. She was upset. I understand.”
Of course.
Adrian turns to me, his face hard.
“You knew how weak she is.”
“Adrian—”
“Enough.”
He pulls Sophia behind him.
In the bedroom that used to be mine.
“Stay away from Sophia, Evelyn.”
