On the day we were supposed to get married, I had just finished my makeup when I got a text from the one and only Zachary Reynolds.
"Kate, Hannah and I already got married. You don't need to come."
"She said she wanted to see if getting married really feels as exciting as people say online."
Hannah Joule.
She was Zack's best friend. I once heard that Hannah didn't really believe in marriage, so her mother got really worried and ended up asking Zachary to help Hannah change her mind.
So Zachary gave Hannah the diamond ring that had been passed down in the Reynolds family for generations. the one meant for the family's daughter-in-law. He wanted her to feel what it was like to carry on the family tradition.
He took her to try on wedding dresses, so she could feel what it was like to be a bride.
At first, I thought it was just one friend helping another. Nothing more.
Then, a second later, Zachary posted something on his social media.
[My bride.] He wrote.
The uploaded photo showed their two marriage certificates, and a picture of the two of them kissing.
That's when I realized. This whole "helping a friend" thing had just been flirting in disguise. I was probably set up in the middle of all these just to make things more interesting between them.
I left one comment on Zack's post: [Congratulations. Forever and ever.]
Once done, I searched for Zachary's older brother contact number and sent him a message.
[Trev, weren't you the one who said you'd steal me away and marry me first? Well, no need to go through all that trouble now.]
[Get ready before ten. We're getting married.]
***
By the time I got to City Hall, Zachary and Hannah were still outside, holding up their marriage certificate and taking photos.
Hannah was wearing the same hoodie as me. It matched Zachary's couple's outfit. Nearby, I saw both of their mother, Tina and Cleo smiling warmly.
"Zack spent two thousand dollars on this photographer just for the wedding registration photos. Apparently, he's really good," Tina explained.
"Wait till you see the pictures! Then you'll understand why your Hannah is finally warming up to marriage!" Cleo was busy hyping up the moment next to Tina.
Just yesterday, Cleo was planning the details for Zack’s and mine’s marriage. I remembered asking to hire a photographer for us.
Back then, Zachary's spoke gently despite his firm denial to my idea, "As long as the two of us are happy, that's all that matters. Why waste money on taking a bunch of photos?"
As if on cue, Zachary finally spotted me during a break from the short photo session. His face immediately went stiff before he strided closer to me. "Didn't I tell you not to come?"
"And god! You're actually wearing a matching outfit with me. People could misunderstand, you know!" he groaned in disapponitment.
I laughed and spit a sarcasm. "What? I'm not allowed to wear this? Are you saying that I’m the third person in your little relationship?"
Zachary froze for a second, then rubbed his temple, looking exhausted. "You know.. that's not what I meant!" He continued, "Look. Hannah told me that it wouldn't feel right to register a marriage without matching outfits, so I bought her one."
Soon, Hannah noticed me and rolled her eyes. She pouted, clearly annoyed. "I was actually starting to enjoy this. Why does someone always have to come and ruin it?"
The woman acted angry and puted. "Zack, honestly, I still don't think marriage is worth it. Maybe we should just go back inside and get a divorce certificate instead!"
Before Zachary could even respond, Tina jumped in first, clearly upset. "Katlyn, didn't Zack already tell you not to come? Hannah finally started thinking marriage might not be so bad, and you just had to come ruin it?"
Cleo's eyes went red too. "I only asked Zack to help because he and Hannah grew up together. I never thought it would upset you like this."
I was baffled. How was all that my fault?
Zachary leaned in close and murmured in my ear. "Kate. You know that Tina is close to my family. She’s like my second mother and I simply helping her out. Do you have to make such a big deal out of this?"
Zack conitnued, "We already agreed too. Once Hannah truly believes marriage isn't so bad, I'll divorce her. After that, Tina will find her someone more suitable! Do you really have to embarrass everyone?"
I looked straight at Zachary. "So you think I'm here to ruin things too?"
Zachary didn't answer. Instead, he flagged down a taxi and started pulling me toward it. "Just go. Now."
I yanked my arm out of his grip. "Why should I be the one to leave?"
We weren't being quiet, and people around us registering their own marriages started glancing over. Even the hired photographer noticed the commotion.
He looked at me, then at Hannah, taking in our matching outfits, his expression turning awkward. "Um... who is this?"
Zachary said nothing.
Hannah looped her arm through his. "Well? Who is she? Don't tell me I just got married and I'm already getting dirty looks from some other woman? If that's how this is going to be, I'd rather not get married at all!"
I stared straight at Zack too. He better answer that question.
Two seconds passed before he finally spoke, "She's someone who's been chasing after me. I already turned her down. I have no idea how she found out I was registering my marriage today. She's probably just here to cause trouble."
Then, Zack made an announcement. "Everyone, don't get the wrong idea. Hannah here is my rightful wife."

Zachary waved off the small crowd that had gathered around us, then told the photographer to keep shooting.
The photographer raised his camera. "Alright, Mr. Groom, down on one knee! Give me that proposal look!"
Without a second of hesitation, Zachary dropped to one knee. Like some kind of magic trick, he pulled a ring box from his pocket.
He opened it. Inside sat a diamond ring, catching the light. "Hann, you always say marriage isn't worth it. But I want you to know. marrying someone else might not mean much. Marrying me? That's different."
"This ring is custom-made from Desmond Jewels. One ring per person, once in a lifetime. And I'm giving mine to you."
Hannah's eyes went wide with surprise.
The photographer captured every second of it.
"Oh my god, that's so romantic!" A few couples nearby gasped out loud.
Someone else pointed in my direction. "Look how in love those two are. Why is she even here, chasing after him like that?"
Another voice chimed in. "Right? Showing up on their wedding day just to ruin it. Does she really think they'd care about her standing there?"
The silver ring on my finger suddenly felt like it was cutting into my skin.
Zachary had given it to me the day he confessed his feelings for me. Back then, he hadn't been welcomed back into the Reynolds family yet. he was just a broke student. He'd eaten instant noodles for an entire month just to save up enough to buy it.
"Kate, once we get married someday, I'll get you something better."
But when our own wedding got closer, I sent him a picture of a ring style I liked. What I got back wasn't excitement.
"Kate, when did you get so materialistic?" he'd said coldly. "That silver ring on your hand is beautiful. It already means something. And you're telling me you still think some diamond ring beats it?"
All I'd wanted was a little more meaning for our wedding. But somehow, the way he said it made me feel like I was the one in the wrong. So I never brought it up again.
The night before we were supposed to register our marriage, I sat there polishing that silver ring until it shined. Turns out he could buy a diamond ring after all. Just not for me.
I looked down at Zachary's hand. He wasn't wearing the silver ring that matched mine. Instead, after slipping the diamond ring onto Hannah's finger, he'd put the matching one on his own hand.
I looked away and slid the ring off my finger. I was about to drop it into the trash can when a shadow fell over me. I looked up. It was Zachary.
For a second, I actually thought maybe he still cared about that ring. Then he spoke, "Can you just... not be here right now? Hannah said seeing you is upsetting her."
So that was it. I was just an eyesore to him now.
I didn't hesitate. I dropped the ring straight into the trash.
Zachary's breath caught for a moment, but in the end, he didn't say anything.
"Sorry, but I'm not leaving," I said simply. "I'm waiting for my partner. We're getting our marriage certificate today too."
Zachary let out a tired, humorless laugh. "Stop being so difficult, Kate. I can't marry you today."
I shook my head. "I never said it was with you—"
Before I could finish, a hand struck my cheek.

A red mark bloomed instantly across my cheek.
Zachary grabbed Hannah's arm. "Hann, what are you doing?"
Hannah rubbed her wrist as she spoke with childlike mischief, "I heard one of the best parts of being married is putting the other woman in her place. Well, figured I'd try it out myself. Honestly? Pretty satisfying."
Then, Hannah continued nonchalantly, "What, I'm not allowed?"
Something flickered across Zachary's face as if he was holding his own anger. In the end, he just shook his head.
"No, it's fine." He turned to me. "Kate, you should go. People are already filming this. If it gets out, it will hurt you. I'm doing this for your own good."
For my own good? Again?
Zack never invited me to have dinner with his family because he'd given the diamond family heirloom ring to Hannah instead. If I were to show up, people would talk behind his back. So, this whole "for my own good" was just his trick to safe his own image.
He'd made me switch wedding dress shops from the the one I'd picked after weeks of research. All of that because he'd already taken Hannah there. If I showed up, people might get the wrong idea. Switching shops was "for my own good."
Every single time, I'd told myself to understand his actions. But enough is enough!
Around us, people kept filming and mutterred how Hannah had been right to slap me.
"I'm posting this online. Someone needs to call this out. How is this any different from harassment?"
I pulled out my phone and looked around at them. "I'm not the other woman here! If you all care so much about doing "justice", don't you think you should know the truth first?"
I started pulling up my messages with Zachary.
The next second, my phone was ripped out of my hand and smashed onto the ground. The screen cracked instantly.
My eyes burned. I lunged to grab it but Zachary kicked it before I could. It slammed into the edge of a flower bed and shattered into pieces. There was no fixing it now.
"Zachary! Are you out of your mind?!"
That phone held every message I'd ever exchanged with my father before he passed away. The model was so old I could never back it up. That's exactly why I'd never replaced it, glitches and all.
Zachary knew that. He knew all of it yet he still broke it.
That guy saw the tears spill down my face, and for a second, something in his expression cracked. But all he said was, "You started it! You're trying to ruin Hann's reputation!"
I dropped to the ground, scrambling through the broken pieces, searching for the memory card. It was nowhere.
"Looking for this?" Hannah held up the tiny card between two fingers.
I lunged toward her. "Give it back!"
The next second, she snapped it clean in half.
"No—!" Something inside me finally broke. My vision went red, and I ran straight at her.
Before I could reach her, Hannah stumbled back two steps, wobbling like she was about to fall.
Then a force shoved me backward. I hit the ground hard, palms scraping against the rough pavement, pain shooting through my hands.
I looked up. Zachary had pulled Hannah into his arms, shielding her.
He checked her over anxiously. "Are you hurt anywhere?"
Hannah shook her head, squeezing out a few tears. "Zack, I just thought her phone looked so old, I figured it didn't matter if it broke. I'll buy her a new one, big deal."
"She's the one who crashed our wedding registration and caused a scene, and I didn't even say anything. Why did she just shove me?"
Zachary's brow furrowed deep with anger. "Katlyn. Apologize to Hann. Now."
I kept my head down, refusing.
That's when Tina lost her patience. "Zack already explained everything, and you wouldn't listen! Now you're trying to hurt Hann too? Get on your knees and apologize to her right now."
Tina continued, "Or I'll have Zack make sure your mother loses her care at Reynolds Medical Center."

I looked up at Zachary, unable to believe what I was hearing. His brow was furrowed, but he said nothing. Silence was his answer.
"Zachary Reynolds!" His name tore out of my throat.
Still nothing.
My parents had been in a car accident a year ago. My father died instantly. My mother had been in a coma ever since.
I never imagined that the same man who once held my hand and swore, "I promise I'll make sure your mom wakes up," would stand here today and let his own mother use that against me.
Everything inside me snapped at once. My nails dug into my palms. I looked up at Tina, and the words just spilled out before I could stop them.
"No wonder you're so good at threatening people! You built your whole life the same way. You were the one who broke up someone else's marriage. Zachary was born from that affair. And now you're defending someone else trying to wreck my relationship too?"
Zachary's voice cracked with anger. "Katlyn! What is wrong with you? How dare you say that to Tina? Apologize. Now."
I shouted back, my voice raw. "Your mother is threatening my mother's life to force an apology out of me for something I didn't even do. I was just telling the truth!"
"And you, Zack! You've only been back with the Reynolds for a few years. Since when do you have the authority to kick a patient out of the hospital?"
Zachary pulled out his phone, his thumb already hovering over the call button."Whether I have that authority isn't up to you to decide. While I'm still asking nicely… apologize to my mother and to Hann. Right now, or I'll have your mother thrown out of that hospital myself."
"You wouldn't dare!" My heart was slamming against my chest. "If you do this, Trev won't let it go!"
"Trev? My brother?" Zachary let out a cold laugh. “Don’t act like you know him.”
I spat out. "Oh, I know him alright. He's the son of your father's first marriage and got named an heir before your father died. He's the one who actually runs Reynolds Medical Center!"
For a second, Zachary's expression froze. Tina's face went pale too.
But a moment later, Zachary just scoffed. "So what if he does? Even if that's true, who do you think you are, trying to hide behind Trevor’s name? Apologize. Now."
The crowd's phones were practically shoved in my face at this point.
Standing in front of me was the man I'd given three years of my life to. The man I'd once pictured walking down the aisle with. Now, one of his arms was wrapped protectively around another woman.
The other hand held a phone, ready to dial a number that could get my mother killed. My head spun. The pain and the unfairness of it all threatened to spill out of me completely. But I couldn't gamble with my mother's life.
Shaking, I slowly lowered myself down, my head bowed. "I'm sorry," I whispered.
Something flickered in Zachary's eyes when he saw me give in. Maybe a flash of guilt. But to keep backing Hannah up, he pushed further anyway. "Don't just stand there and say it. Get on your knees. Apologize to my mother too!"
My body felt like it was filled with lead as I forced my knees to bend.
Just as I was about to kneel, the screech of tires cut through the air. A car door opened, and a man stepped out. He was wearing the same matching outfit as me, a bouquet of roses in his hands.
He took one last look at me before his face darkened. "Kate. They hurt you. Didn't they."
The man standing in front of me was Trevor Reynolds.
Zachary and Tina's faces went stiff in an instant. However, since Hannah didn't recognize him, she laughed with mockery.
"And who are you supposed to be? Some actor she hired?"
Trevor didn't even glance at her. He walked straight up to me and helped me up off the ground. Then he handed me the roses.
He noticed my injured palm, the cut over it looked rough and painful. Then his eyes landed on the shattered phone on the ground, and his expression turned dark.
"Who did this?"
Zachary's face shifted through a dozen emotions. He clenched his fists, forcing the words out. "Trev, this is all a misunderstanding..."
"I asked who did this." Trevor cut him off, his gaze sweeping from Hannah to Tina.
Hannah took a step back under that stare, but she forced out a scoff anyway. "Oh, I get it now! You're the backup boyfriend! Wow, Katlyn, you really do get around, huh? Got a whole lineup."
"I'll ask one more time." Trevor lifted his eyes to her. "Who pushed her? Who broke her phone?"
Zachary gritted his teeth and stepped in front of Hannah. "Trev, I'll explain everything to you later, okay? Kate, just go."
Trevor let out a cold laugh. "Why would she go anywhere? Katlyn came here today to register her marriage. With me."
Zachary's face drained of color. "What did you just say?" He then looked at me. "Kate, what is going on between you and my brother? Is this some kind of joke?"
I lifted my head, and said firmly, "It's not a joke. I've told you. I was waiting for my partner to register our marriage."
Zachary's eyes went wide. "Kate, stop this nonsense!"
"It's not nonsense." Trevor took my hand. "Kate came to City Hall today to register her marriage with me. She's my girlfriend."
