In the sixth year of dating my boyfriend, he moved his childhood sweetheart into our future home just to cheer her up. When I tried to kick her out in fury, he stopped me. He yelled at me, "Avery, Chloe is just like a sister to me! If you act like this, how can I ever marry you?" I replied, "This is who I am. If you can't marry me, then get the hell out!" When I walked into the house, there was another woman there. My boyfriend, Carter, was smiling softly, leaning in to take a bite of the cake she was feeding him. They looked disgustingly intimate. A woman's intuition told me their relationship was anything but innocent. I slammed my handbag onto the entryway console. The noise startled them, and they both turned to look at me. The woman flashed a bright smile, her eyes full of defiance. Carter jumped up immediately, putting distance between them, panic flickering across his face. I raised an eyebrow at him. "Carter, who is this? Aren't you going to introduce us?" Before Carter could speak, the woman sashayed over and grabbed my arm. "Hi! I'm Chloe. Carter and I grew up next door to each other—childhood sweethearts, basically." I pulled my arm away with an expressionless face. "Don't play family with me. My mom never gave me a sister." Cut down so publicly, Chloe's eyes instantly welled with tears. She spun around to whine to Carter, "Carter, look at how mean she's being!" To my utter disgust, that idiot Carter actually fell for it. He turned on me with an accusatory scowl. "Avery, Chloe is like a little sister to me. I've looked out for her since we were kids. You don't have to be so hostile." I glared at him and pointed at the personal belongings scattered all over the sofa. "You still haven't explained what all of this is." Looking awkward, Carter stepped forward and took the luggage from my hand. "These belong to Chloe. She just got back from overseas, and her parents are out of state. She doesn't know anyone here, so my mom was worried sick. Mom asked me to let her stay here for a couple of days." "Avery, she's practically family. Don't be so petty." I almost laughed out loud from pure rage. "Carter, are you telling me that just because your mom was worried, you moved your so-called 'little sister' into our future marital home?" "You're being completely unreasonable! She's my sister. What's wrong with letting her crash here for a few days?" Chloe chimed in from the side, "Yeah, Avery, I'm only staying for a few days. As soon as I find a job, I'll move out." "Carter, this is our marital home! Do you even know what that means? I spent months supervising the contractors for every inch of this place. We handpicked all the furniture together! Why the hell did you let another woman move in without even telling me?" Carter looked defensive and cornered. "My mom insisted I look after Chloe. How could I say no to her?" "And the only reason I didn't tell you beforehand was because I knew you'd get mad like this." Hearing his twisted logic made me want to crack his skull open to see what kind of garbage was inside. "So what, I'm supposed to thank you for being so considerate?" Seeing the sheer fury on my face, Carter finally realized I was at my breaking point. He quickly tried to soften his tone. "I'm sorry, Avery. I didn't think you'd care this much. I promise, the second Chloe gets a job, I'll have her move out immediately, okay? Please, just stop being mad." Seeing Carter bend over backward to placate me, Chloe pouted indignantly. "Carter, you bought this place! You have every right to decide who stays here. Why are you groveling to her..." Carter cut her off sharply. "That's enough! I messed up here. Chloe, find a job as soon as you can and move out." "Carter, are you abandoning me? Did you forget what you promised my mom? You said you'd take good care of me!" "Chloe, drop it. When you move out, I'll come visit you all the time. Don't worry, I won't let you suffer alone in this city." The two of them went back and forth, gazing into each other's eyes like tragic star-crossed lovers. And I was just the wicked villain tearing them apart. I reached my absolute limit. I marched straight up to Carter and slapped him hard across the face. "Carter, I never realized how completely shameless you are." Before Carter could even react, Chloe let out a piercing scream. She rushed over, caressing Carter's cheek with theatrical heartbreak. Seeing the red handprint, she turned and glared at me furiously. "Avery! Who do you think you are, hitting him like that?" "Shut up, or you're getting one next." Chloe looked terrified by my venom. She shrank back into Carter's arms, sobbing, "Carter, she's terrifying..." Carter looked down at me, his voice icy and harsh. "Avery, how much longer are you going to throw this tantrum? I told you, Chloe is just my childhood neighbor. Can you stop causing drama over nothing?" Tears burned the corners of my eyes, but beneath my blinding rage was an ache of deep hurt. "Causing drama? Carter, go ask anyone on the street—who moves a girl with zero blood relation into a marital home before the bride-to-be has even moved in? Carter, I built this home piece by piece to fit our dreams. How could you do this to me?" Carter looked down guiltily, but he still stubbornly retorted, "Even so, you shouldn't have slapped me. Especially not in front of Chloe! This is my house. Don't I even have the right to let my own sister stay here?" Looking at this completely unrepentant man, an overwhelming exhaustion washed over me. "Fine. You're right. It's your house, and you can invite whoever you want. I don't have the energy to scream at you anymore. Let's take some time apart to cool off." I turned on my heel and walked out. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Carter reach out to stop me, but Chloe clamped onto his arm, holding him back.Inside the apartment, Chloe held Carter's face, gently dabbing ointment onto his cheek as if terrified of hurting him. "Carter, is she always this aggressive? Resorting to violence over every little thing... She really scared me just now." "I don't mind her hating me. After all, I'm the one who loves you, so it's natural she dislikes me." "But you didn't do anything wrong! How could she treat you like that?" "You're such an amazing man. What gives her the right to hit you?" "You guys aren't even married yet, and she's already walking all over you. If I hadn't come over, I never would've known you were suffering like this. If your mom knew, her heart would break." Basking in Chloe's tender care, Carter winced and groaned. "Avery... she didn't use to be like this. Maybe the stress from work after graduating changed her." "Don't say things like that anymore. If Avery hears, she'll start another fight with me." Chloe rolled her eyes at him. "Carter, stop defending her! Did she look like she respected you at all when she slapped you today?" "No wonder your mom never really liked her. If my future son brought home such an overbearing girlfriend, I wouldn't like her either." "She's bossy, and your parents don't approve of her. Why don't you just break up and find someone better?" Carter fell silent for a moment before answering in a raspy voice, "I can't. We've been together for so many years. You can't just throw that away." "Besides, nobody's perfect. Avery is gorgeous, socially poised, and brilliant at her job. Most importantly, she loves me. Within my realistic options, she's the absolute best choice." Carter listed all the practical perks of marrying me, which made Chloe panic. "Carter, I love you too! And our families are on the same level! We grew up together. Isn't it obvious that I'm the perfect match for you?" With that, she leaned in to kiss him, but Carter pulled back. They ended up playfully wrestling and teasing each other on the couch. I had only walked back to grab the handbag I forgot on the console, but I never expected to witness something so utterly repulsive. They were so engrossed in their little heart-to-heart that they hadn't even heard the front door click open. Watching their sickening intimacy, my heart sank to rock bottom. I suddenly remembered when we first started dating in college. One day, a sudden downpour caught us after class without an umbrella. Carter had sprinted through the pouring rain to a convenience store just to buy one, ran back to my lecture hall, and walked me all the way to my dorm. By the time we got there, Carter was soaked to the bone, while only the cuffs of my jeans had caught a few stray drops. That boy who cherished and protected me with his whole heart had died in the river of time. In his place stood this calculating stranger who weighed his options like business transactions. Maybe it was truly time to rethink this relationship. I drew in a sharp breath, forced back my tears, and quietly turned to walk out of that house for good. That night, I ordered takeout and downed ice-cold beer after beer in my apartment. My best friend, Mia, unlocked the door and walked in. Seeing me drinking myself into a stupor, she hesitated. She watched me for a moment before finally snatching the beer can right out of my hand. "Look, I don't know what kind of drama is making you drown your sorrows alone, but as your best friend, I have to remind you: your period is over two weeks late." Her words made my alcohol-fogged brain short-circuit. "What did you say?" "I said your period is two weeks late. Our cycles have always synced up. Mine ended ages ago, and you haven't even started. Didn't you notice something was off?" I jumped to my feet so fast that I knocked a beer bottle off the table. It shattered across the floor. I yanked at my hair in a panic. "No way... Carter and I are always so careful. There's no way it's that coincidental!" Mia gave me a dry look. "And what if it is? We've been friends for years. You're regular as clockwork. For it to be delayed this long..." Her warning sent a chill down my spine. Without even changing out of my slippers, I dashed down to the 24-hour pharmacy to buy pregnancy tests. Staring at the two dark red lines, I wanted to burst into tears. Mia let out a low whistle. "See? Told you. Well, the baby is here. When are you and Carter going to lock in the wedding date? You've been dating for six years. It's high time to make it official, right?" I looked at her miserably. "If I told you I wanted to raise this baby on my own, would you kill me?" Seeing Mia's jaw drop in anger, I spilled everything about Carter's stunt earlier today. Mia gritted her teeth in rage, but she still managed to speak gently: "Carter is spineless and easily swayed. What he did was completely messed up, and I don't blame you for being furious. But this baby belongs to both of you. You need to talk to him. If he cuts Chloe out of his life for good, get married. If he can't, you need to seriously think about your options. You know better than anyone how hard it is to grow up in a single-parent household." I sat on my bed all night, agonizing over it. For the sake of the baby in my belly, I decided to give Carter one last chance. If he could remove Chloe from our lives completely, I would pretend yesterday never happened. If he couldn't, it simply meant this child and I were not meant to be. A week later, Carter brought me over to his parents' place for dinner. His mother was as cold as ever, and his father didn't crack a single smile. Carter patted the back of my hand reassuringly, then formally announced to his parents that he wanted to marry me. A mocking smile crept onto his mother's face. "Look at you, all grown up and ignoring everything your parents say. Fine. If you've made up your mind, get married. Just don't come crying to me when you regret it later." "I won't regret it." Carter held my hand tightly, his voice firm—as if trying to convince his parents, or maybe just convince himself. Right in the middle of our standoff, the doorbell rang. His mother opened the door, and her cold scowl instantly melted into pure delight. "Chloe, sweetheart! Come on in! When did you get back? I was just talking about you with your mom yesterday!" "Auntie, I've been back for a few days! I had some free time today, so I came over to steal some dinner. You won't get tired of me, will you?" Carter's mom playfully tapped her on the arm. "What nonsense! I wish you could come over every single day." "Honestly, when you were little, you followed Carter everywhere and kept saying you'd grow up to be his wife. Back then, I thought, if Carter could marry you, I'd be the happiest mom in the world." "You're staying for good this time, right? Well, since you can't be my daughter-in-law, I'll get together with your parents soon. Let's make you my goddaughter! Either way, we're family." Carter's mother kept glancing at me while saying all of this. I knew every single word was aimed directly at me, designed to make me feel small and back out. And to be honest, I really was done. His parents hated me, and there was always Chloe lingering between us like an unshakeable ghost. No matter how much I tried to rationalize it, these toxic dynamics would only poison our future. Worst of all, Carter's heart was already wandering. I was just a sensible calculation to him, not an irreplaceable love. I refused to swallow this half-baked life. Amidst their warm laughter and chatter, I grabbed my bag and walked toward the door. "Carter, stay right there!" his mother barked, stopping him before he could chase after me. "If she wants to leave, let her! Let me make one thing crystal clear: as long as I'm alive, a rude girl like that will never step foot into this family!" Her words froze Carter in his tracks. Hearing that, I turned around, pulled out my phone, and blocked Carter across every platform right in front of them. Then I flashed the screen at his mother. "Don't worry, Mrs. Hayes. I officially declare that your son and I are over. I wouldn't step into your family if you paid me. Happy now?" She did, in fact, look quite pleased. Carter's face, however, turned utterly livid. He was visibly outraged by my defiance. I didn't give a damn about his feelings. I had already given him his chance. If he had stood up to his mother for even a single second while she was humiliating me, I wouldn't have walked away so cleanly. That night, my phone on the nightstand lit up incessantly. Even though I had deleted his contact, I recognized the number immediately. It was Carter. I hung up over and over, but he kept redialing. Annoyed out of my mind, I finally answered to see what kind of garbage he had to say. Yet again, I underestimated just how shameless he could be. I thought he was calling to apologize, but instead, he launched straight into an attack. "Avery, what the hell was that today? Do you have any idea how much effort I put into convincing my parents? They finally stopped objecting and agreed to let us get married, and then you pull a childish stunt like that?" My tone remained deadpan. "Carter, let me remind you: we broke up. In what capacity are you lecturing me right now?" As soon as the words left my mouth, there was a clatter on the other end, as if something had dropped. Then a soft female voice filtered through: "Carter, are you okay?" I scoffed. "Carter, clean up your own mess first. Isn't having your sweet little neighbor girl by your side enough? Why are you still bothering me?" Carter quickly lowered his voice in a flustered whisper: "Avery, I swear I didn't know Chloe was going to show up today, and I had no idea my mom would say those ridiculous things." "Look, Chloe and I grew up together, but she is strictly a sister to me. You can't just give me the death penalty over that! It's not fair." "Yes, my mom crossed the line today, but she's still an elder! Even if you were unhappy, you shouldn't have embarrassed her like that. You just made her hate you more." "Avery, just come back and apologize to my mom. She was so upset by what you did that she couldn't even eat dinner." I let out a cold laugh at his absurd lecture. "Carter, did I not speak English earlier? We are done. Do you not understand the word 'breakup'? And you want me to apologize to your mom? Why doesn't she apologize for humiliating me?" "I see things clearly now. The only reason your mom hates me is so she can clear a path for your precious Chloe. Isn't this great? I'm stepping aside to let you two be together. What more could you possibly want?" My sharp words struck a nerve, and Carter snapped into defensive rage. His voice boomed through the receiver: "Avery, don't push your luck! Who do you think you are, throwing a tantrum and dumping me?" "Let's see who else would ever marry a woman knocked up out of wedlock! I only swallowed my pride and smoothed things over for the sake of the baby, and you actually think you're hot shit!" Even though my mind was completely made up, his vile words still pierced me with sharp pain and humiliation. I felt a sickening wave of disappointment. How could I have wasted six years of my life on a man like this? "You don't need to worry about my future," I said coldly. "Rest assured, even if I end up begging on the streets, I'll never beg at your doorstep."

"Look, Chloe and I grew up together, but she is strictly a sister to me.
