第1章
We were standing outside the marriage registration office, Don Damian Moretti and I, going over our documents.
My mother watched the papers in my hands, her eyes rimming red.
"My little girl, all grown up. Today she's really getting married."
I was about to comfort her when hurried footsteps echoed from outside.
Bianca Moretti came running over.
She was Damian's adoptive sister, no blood relation, and for the past five years, she'd been the one person who could change his mind with a single sentence.
"Damian!" She was breathless. "I got the date wrong! Last night when I was reading your star chart, I realized today isn't good for you two to register. This day next year is the best date. It's better for our family too."
I didn't stop. I kept walking toward the entrance.
But Damian stopped.
He looked at Bianca, his voice gentle.
"Alright. Whatever you say."
Bianca beamed instantly. She turned to me, her eyes wide and innocent.
"Olivia, you've already waited five years for Damian. What's one more year, right?"
Damian chimed in to persuade me.
"Sweetheart, the registration is just a formality. It doesn't matter when we do it. Bianca's always had good instincts, ever since she was little. If she says today isn't right, she must have her reasons."
I looked at him.
Both sets of parents were here. Every document was prepared and ready. For the Hayes family and the Moretti family, today wasn't just a registration. It was the day both families would formally confirm the alliance.
And Damian Moretti wasn't just my fiance.
He was the Don of the Moretti family.
Yet none of that mattered against one word from Bianca.
I nodded, took out my phone, and posted a status update with my location pinned.
"Before noon today, the first man who gets here can register to marry me."
Less than three minutes later, a chat window that had been silent for a long time lit up.
"Delete that. Wait for me. I'm on my way."
My heart suddenly settled.
Beside me, completely oblivious, Damian was still teasing Bianca.
"You little troublemaker. Why didn't you say something sooner? You made both families come out here for nothing."
Bianca stuck out her tongue playfully.
"Anyone can make a mistake. Good thing I got here in time, otherwise you two would've registered today and it would've been bad for the Moretti family."
She hooked her arm through Damian's affectionately, then winked at me.
"Olivia, don't be upset. I really wasn't trying to cause problems. I just didn't realize until last night when I was reading the chart that today would affect Damian's fortune. This day next year is when you should register. By then his career will be going well, and the family will be more stable."
Damian smiled at me.
"Bianca would never hurt us. Trust her. She's never wrong."
I didn't want to watch their little act anymore.
I said to him, "Right. Since the day we started dating, when have you ever not listened to her?"
The air went dead silent.
From the moment Damian and I got together, Bianca had always found a reason to interrupt us.
On my birthday, all I wanted was for him to have dinner with me. Bianca ran crying to the riverbank, saying she was having a breakdown, that she didn't want to live anymore. Damian rushed over immediately, carried her back, and stayed with her the entire night.
On our first anniversary, Bianca said she wanted him to personally go buy her a cake. Damian dropped everything and left me sitting in a private room with a group of friends who'd come to celebrate.
There were too many incidents like these to count.
As long as Bianca opened her mouth, Damian always put her first.
He had never once seriously considered my feelings.
Bianca pouted, her voice dripping with grievance.
"Damian, Mom, Dad, is Olivia angry? But I'm only doing this for our family. If she really doesn't understand, I can apologize..."
"Bianca, you've done nothing wrong. You don't need to apologize."
Damian immediately stepped in front of her, and when he looked at me, his tone carried a note of impatience.
"Olivia, stop throwing a tantrum. It's just one more year. Our relationship is solid. This little bit of time doesn't matter."
He paused, then added, "Bianca is our family's lucky charm. We can't just ignore what she says. For the sake of a smooth marriage and a stable future, just bear with it."
Just bear with it.
Even something like our marriage registration, the moment Bianca opened her mouth, I was expected to back down.
I suddenly laughed.
So five years of love weighed less than a single offhand remark from Bianca.
But it was fine. Someone was already on his way to register with me.
Today wouldn't be a waste after all.
Still, I wanted to be clear.
"Damian, if you care about Bianca this much, why did you agree to be with me in the first place?"
Damian frowned.
"Olivia, what are you talking about? It's just one year. How is this a big deal? What right do you have to question me?"
So in the end, I was the one in the wrong.
I asked calmly, "If I say I have to register today, what will you do?"
Damian's expression darkened.
"Olivia, both families are here. Don't embarrass me."
第2章
My parents were standing to the side, their faces already grim.
My mother held back her anger, eyes red-rimmed, her voice low. "Damian, marriage is not a game. This date was set by both families together. How can it be changed because of one word from Bianca?"
Damian's tone was flat, even slightly impatient.
"Auntie, I just want to be careful. I don't want our marriage starting off on the wrong foot."
Bianca immediately jumped in, her smile sweet and blinding.
"Exactly, Auntie. Olivia loves Damian so much, she'll definitely be willing to wait. Right, Olivia?"
Everyone's eyes landed on me.
They were waiting for me to compromise. To back down. To do what I'd done for the past five years: swallow every grievance for Damian's sake.
I simply opened my phone and showed them the post I'd just made.
"You can postpone. I won't wait. Someone will be willing to register with me today."
Damian's face went dark instantly.
"Olivia Hayes, are you done? Stop acting like a child. Delete it. Now."
The smile on Bianca's face froze for a split second, a flash of panic in her eyes. She quickly rearranged her features into that wounded look.
"Olivia, why do you have to be like this? Over one year, you're going to treat marriage like a joke?"
"You're the ones who treated my marriage like a joke first."
I looked at her coldly, then turned to Damian.
"Why is it that when Bianca talks, you have to listen, but when I talk, you can pretend you didn't hear a thing?"
"Damian, let me be clear. A one-year delay. I don't agree."
"Today, either we register, or we're done."
Damian froze.
He clearly thought I was just being petulant.
A dismissive weariness flickered in his eyes as he reached for me.
"Stop being stubborn. Be reasonable. The wedding date is already set. Missing one piece of paper won't change anything. What are you even insisting on?"
I flung his hand away.
"Don't touch me. Since you won't register with me, you're not my husband. You're just a stranger."
"I have nothing to say to strangers."
The atmosphere turned to ice.
Both sets of parents exchanged uneasy glances, the awkwardness thick enough to freeze the air.
Bianca bit her lip, feigning concern.
"Olivia, do you really want to push Damian like this? Making a scene like this, people will only think you're immature and unreasonable."
She paused, her voice soft, every word laced with thorns.
"Besides, who else would truly be good to you, other than Damian? Don't ruin yourself over an impulse."
She seemed to be advising me, but really she was elevating Damian and putting me down.
As if without Damian, I could never find anyone better.
I let out a laugh.
"My future is none of your concern. Worry about yourself first."
"Enough."
Damian's impatient voice cut through again.
"Olivia Hayes, I'm saying this one last time. Delete that post and apologize to Bianca. I'll pretend none of this happened."
"If you insist on making a scene, then next month's wedding is off."
That was exactly what I wanted.
"Fine."
I looked at him and spoke word by word. "Those are your words. Then it's off."
That single sentence stunned everyone present.
Damian's pupils contracted slightly, disbelief written all over his face.
He had never imagined that the woman who'd been docile for five years would actually stand her ground.
He never imagined I would actually dare to say we wouldn't get married.
