My husband Sebastian's parents were trapped in the disaster zone of a hurricane-driven flash flood. I risked my life piloting a rescue boat in and pulled them aboard.
The moment I let out a breath of relief, a deafening roar erupted overhead.
It was Sebastian's drone fleet, diving straight at us—while he stood in his helicopter with his arm around his little assistant Vivienne, watching like it was some kind of show.
The drones churned the water into a whirlpool, trying to swallow our boat whole.
I frantically dialed my husband.
"Sebastian, have you lost your mind?! Mom and Dad are on this boat!"
But on the other end, all I got was Sebastian's soft laugh.
"A year ago, when Vivi's parents were trapped in a flash flood, you were the rescue team leader—and you abandoned them to save someone else."
"Today, I'm going to let you experience exactly what it feels like to watch your family swallowed alive."
His little assistant let out a delighted squeal.
"Baby, you're incredible! I want to see those two old wretches dragged under!"
The boat rocked violently. Sebastian's parents clutched at me in terror.
I screamed into the phone.
"Sebastian, look properly! It's your parents on this boat!"
...
"Aurora, aren't you tired of this little act yet?"
"Mom and Dad went out to the family estate in the countryside for the weekend. I personally saw them onto the private jet this morning. Could you at least *think* before you make up a lie?"
Vivienne snatched the phone from him.
"Aurora, this is your karma coming back to bite you! You killed my parents, and today you and those two old bastards can go to hell as payment for them!"
I was about to have Sebastian's parents speak up.
But they were trembling all over, faces caked with mud, hair a matted mess.
In such a bedraggled state, they were nearly unrecognizable.
"You two are absolute lunatics!"
I roared and hung up.
There was no time.
If I didn't move fast, the boat would capsize.
Margaret's face had gone chalk-white. She clung to my arm.
"Rory, what on earth has gotten into Sebastian? He wouldn't actually try to kill us, would he? I'm his *mother*!"
Richard's face had drained of color too.
I had no time to comfort them.
One wrong move and the boat would go down with everyone on it.
The drone swarm was carving a whirlpool below the surface, trying to drag us in.
"Everyone, hold on! Sit tight!"
I slammed the throttle to the limit.
At that exact moment, a drone swooped in close. Its blade sliced open my cheek.
"Blood! Rory, your face!"
Richard bellowed at the sky.
"Sebastian, you animal! She's your *wife*!"
I bared my teeth—the movement tugged the wound.
Fucking hell, it hurt.
Sebastian's cold laugh crackled through the helicopter's loudspeaker.
"Still got the nerve to curse me? You two old bastards must be tired of living!"
The drones slammed into the hull. The boat lurched so hard we were nearly thrown clean out.
Muddy water was already pouring in. Half the boat was submerged.
We were seconds from being swallowed. Margaret let out a scream of pure despair.
The next second, a grapple hook shot down from Sebastian's helicopter and latched firmly onto the bow.
Sebastian's call came through. I hit speaker.
"Scared now? Sign the document in your inbox and maybe I'll let you live."
I pulled out my phone.
I wanted to know what Sebastian was really after.
But when I opened it, my stomach dropped.
It was a document making me confess that I had *deliberately* abandoned the rescue effort for Vivienne's parents, and take full liability for all deaths and injuries from that day!
When the truth was that it was *Sebastian's* company that had violated regulations, destabilizing the mountain and triggering the flash flood in the first place.
And now he wanted me as his scapegoat, so Vivienne could claim a massive settlement on top of it.
If I signed, I'd spend the rest of my life behind bars.
Margaret looked up at me, shaking, and broke into sobs.
"Monster! How did we ever raise such an inhuman creature!"
"For that whore, he'd murder his own wife—and his own parents!"
Richard snatched the phone and jabbed a finger toward the helicopter, roaring.
"Sebastian! You inhuman bastard! Look properly! I'm your *father*! You'd kill your own parents?!"
"Get down here right now! I will *never* let your wife sign something like this!"
Warmth flooded my chest, followed by a wave of grief.
Three years of marriage, and they'd always treated me like their own daughter.
But Sebastian only laughed with contempt.
"You old bastard, you've got the nerve to impersonate my father? So desperate to save your own skin?"
"You think Sebastian Locke's father would be some filthy tramp caked in mud like you?"
"Aurora, I'm warning you—don't throw my kindness back in my face! Sign it! *Now!* My patience isn't infinite!"
Several drones surged forward, blades slashing toward us.
Richard's arm was ripped open in an instant—the cut deep enough to expose bone.
"Made up your mind yet? If you haven't, I'll send you all to hell so you can think it over there!"

"Richard!"
Margaret fumbled desperately to press her hands over the wound.
I fixed my eyes on Sebastian's drone fleet above.
"Sebastian, you really think you've already won?"
Sebastian scoffed.
"On the brink of death and still talking tough? Your lives are in my hands!"
I shook my head.
"You're being used as someone's pawn, and you're deluded enough to think you're some avenging hero of love."
"What are you talking about?"
"I mean—you're about to regret this. Very soon."
Vivienne shrieked.
"Baby, don't listen to her nonsense! She's stalling! *Kill* her!"
The taunt tipped him over the edge.
"Do it!"
Dozens of drones extended their sharpened metal blades in unison.
Sebastian's industrial-grade drones could punch a hole clean through our boat with a single strike.
I yanked something out of the emergency pack.
*Crack!*—the flare gun fired.
Sebastian howled with laughter.
"A flare gun? Ha ha ha ha..."
"Aurora, is your brain waterlogged? I've jammed this entire area. No one's coming to save you!"
The wind whipped harder, the waves rising.
Sebastian's parents had closed their eyes, faces filled with despair.
I watched the flare arc up to its peak, and burst.
"Sebastian, do you have any idea what class of jammer I loaded into that flare?"
Sebastian froze, about to ask.
The next second, dozens of drones plunged out of control into the water.
The swarm that had loomed so menacingly a moment ago sank in seconds.
In the helicopter, Sebastian and Vivienne's laughter cut out.
"What's happening? Baby, what's wrong with your drones?!"
I flung the grapple hook loose and drove the boat toward shore.
But Sebastian was furious now, dropping the helicopter down on top of us.
"Aurora, you think this is over?"
The grapple hook lashed down at us again!
My face went pale. I steadied Sebastian's parents and tried to swerve clear.
"Jump! Now!"
If we didn't move, the helicopter's rotors would grind us to nothing!
Richard shoved Margaret hard toward me.
"Rory, take Margaret and go! I'll cover you!"
"Richard!" Margaret screamed.
Too late.
The metal claw drove straight through Richard's already-wounded right arm, hoisting him into the air.
Richard shrieked. Blood soaked half his body in seconds.
"Weren't you the one talking tough? Weren't you saying you'd rather die than sign? Let's see how tough you really are!"
Sebastian swung the arm, whipping Richard through the air.
Margaret had already fainted from terror, collapsed in my arms.
If Sebastian's parents hadn't been out there trying to clean up his mess—
they'd never have been driven by furious grieving families into the heart of a flash-flood disaster zone.
I screamed.
"Sebastian! Stop! Dad's going to die!"
"Now you're begging me?" Sebastian cackled.
"Sign that document! Or I'll drop him in and drown him!"
"Fine! Fine! I'll sign, I'll sign right now!"
Without hesitation, I opened the phone and uploaded my signature to the email.
Richard's voice had already grown feeble.
"You animal... I'm your father..."
Once the email came through, Sebastian's laughter turned cruel.
"You old bastard—I'm the one calling the shots here!"
"Since you don't know what's good for you, keep going—you can die and join Vivi's parents down there!"
He released the arm.
Richard's body plummeted, slammed into the muddy water, and vanished!
"NO!"
"Dad!"

I lunged wildly, clawing at the water, but caught nothing.
"Cry, Aurora. Why aren't you crying?"
"When Vivi's parents were dying, did you watch them like this too—so coldly?"
Vivienne's voice carried a sick thrill.
"Baby, her mother too! Get rid of her!"
Margaret stirred just then, dazed, searching for Richard.
"Rory, where's your Dad?"
She followed my gaze to the churning water, and understanding hit her.
But Sebastian was closing in. All I could do was drag her toward the shore.
The rotor wash behind us nearly slammed us flat.
I pushed her forward with everything I had.
"Mom! Run!"
Sebastian had gone completely off the rails.
"Aurora—playtime's over."
My stomach dropped. I turned.
Sebastian was leaning out of the cabin, a modified nail gun in his hands.
The black barrel was aimed at us.
Vivienne clapped in glee.
"Let them find out what a nail through the bone feels like!"
My scalp prickled.
"Mom! Faster!"
The gravel slope was right there.
If we could just climb it, find cover—
Then—*BANG!*
My right knee exploded. I pitched face-first into the mud and couldn't rise.
The pant leg drenched in blood, bone visible through the hole.
"Rory!"
Margaret had already scrambled up the slope. She spun around at my scream and, without a second's thought, lunged back toward me.
Cold sweat drenched me from the pain. I roared at her, voice shredded.
"Mom! Don't come back! Run!"
"Find Damon! Only Damon can stop Sebastian!"
Sebastian's cousin, Damon Locke, was the true controlling authority of the Locke family trust.
If Damon learned Sebastian had killed Richard, Sebastian would be *finished*.
"I won't leave you!" Margaret wailed, the sound tearing out of her.
"I can't leave you alone!"
But she was a woman who had been sheltered and cherished all her life—she couldn't drag me anywhere.
Every attempt only sank us deeper.
Under my final, desperate look, Margaret bit down hard on her lip, turned, and ran up the slope.
"Rory, wait for me! You *have* to live!"
