I took on a messy divorce case for Hannah Vance, my client. In return, she slept with my husband, Sean Miller. I lost my mind in court. I demanded that Hannah leave with nothing, and in a fit of rage, I grabbed a box cutter, charging at Sean ready to drag him to hell with me. My mom rushed from the gallery and grabbed the blade bare-handed. Blood dripped down her wrist. "Lynn, you're a lawyer! You can't throw your life away over these two bastards!" "It's all my fault. If I hadn't introduced this client to you, your marriage wouldn't be destroyed." "If anyone needs to atone for this, it's me." The next second, she snatched the blade and plunged it straight into her own chest. Her blood splattered all over me. Before the ambulance even arrived, her heart stopped. After that, Hannah fled abroad. Sean became completely submissive, constantly checking in and falling to his knees in tears, begging for forgiveness. My hair turned stark white overnight. Every single day, I went to church to pray and atone for the guilt eating me alive. Until one day, I happened to open the home security camera app on my phone. Mom and Hannah were both sitting in the living room. "Sean, what if Lynn finds out we transferred all her assets?" Mom comforted her gently, patting her hand. "So what if she does? She owes you this." "If I hadn't faked my death back then, who knows how far she would've pushed you." Sean chuckled and chimed in. "Thank you for enduring so much over the years, Eleanor. Don't worry, I'll keep Lynn on a tight leash." "I won't let her hurt Hannah or the baby." Mom was alive. That bloody sacrifice in the courtroom had been a setup from the very beginning. And in this sick, twisted game, I was the only fool kept in the dark. "Lynn? What are you doing here?" The moment I turned to leave, the front door swung open. Mom rushed forward and grabbed me in panic. "Lynn, I know it was wrong to lie to you, but today is Hannah's birthday. Please, stop causing a scene. I'm begging you." Swallowing the bitter taste rising in my throat, I shook off her grip and spoke in a raspy voice: "My mother is dead. Who the hell are you?" Sean stepped in front of Hannah, shielding her with an impatient scowl. "Lynn, how can you talk to Mom like that? Do you have any idea how much she's suffered all these years?" My eyes fell on the birthday cake sitting on the dining table. My heart felt hollowed out. The special birthday tradition she once swore was meant only for me was now being served to another woman. Forever was such a joke. Vows uttered with utter sincerity could be trashed so effortlessly. Mom looked at me pleadingly, her eyes rimmed with red. "Hannah went through so much abuse in her previous marriage. She finally found someone she loves. Just have some pity on her and let it go, please." "What about me?" I looked her dead in the eye. "You pity her, but what about your own daughter? Did I deserve to be lied to for years? Do I have to hand over my husband just because she's pathetic?" Mom said softly: "Weren't you the one who felt sorry for her in the first place and told Sean to help her out? Why can't you be generous now?" When Hannah first walked into my office covered in bruises, desperate for a divorce, I truly felt for her. I was swamped with other cases back then. Since Sean was an attorney too, I asked him to help gather evidence and review documents for her. I did tell him to help her wherever he could. I never imagined I was welcoming a viper into my own home. Sean glared at me coldly. "Hannah went through hell with her abusive ex. As a woman, you should show some empathy." I didn't answer him. Instead, my gaze drifted past his shoulder into the warmly lit townhouse. Hanging by the entryway was the Birkin bag I had dreamed of for years. Sean had told me it wasn't worth the money and bought me a knockoff instead. Yet here was the authentic one, hanging in plain sight. I recognized the layout of the living room, too. It was the exact open-concept design I had spent weeks creating with an interior designer for our dream home. Sean had scrapped it back then, claiming it was too expensive. Now, he had built it here. I let out a dry, bitter laugh, blinking back tears. "No wonder you always told me to save money. You were using my hard-earned cash to fund your little family.""Since this place was bought with my money, it belongs to me." I stared at Sean, my voice chillingly calm. "I don't want to look at any of you. Get the hell out." Hannah peeked out from behind Sean, speaking in a timid, fragile voice. "Lynn, I never wanted to fight you for anything." "But the deed to this house has my name on it." She paused, then added in a whisper: "And the place you're currently living in? It's not yours anymore either." "Why don't you check the property records when you get home and see whose name is on it?" I whipped my head toward Sean. He looked away, avoiding my eyes. My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. That townhouse was the very first property I bought with my own savings. It was my safety net, my sanctuary. My dad died when I was young, and my mom was always too busy working to raise me. I grew up bouncing between relatives' homes, walking on eggshells. I studied until my eyes bled and worked relentless hours on cases just so I could have a place that truly belonged to me. And now, he had stolen that, too. "It's just a house," Sean finally muttered, brushing it off casually. "Think of it as compensation for Hannah." "I'll buy you a bigger, better house later." Hannah tugged at Sean's sleeve, her voice dripping with innocence. "Sean, I don't need compensation." She glanced up at me, then quickly lowered her head. "After all... if you hadn't been taking care of me back then, Lynn wouldn't have lost her baby." The words struck me like a bolt of lightning. A phantom pain shot through my lower abdomen, dragging back the agony of that miscarriage. So that was why... That was why Sean was never home during that time. That was why he never picked up my calls. Even that night, when I was hemorrhaging in the hospital, begging him to come sign the surgical consent form. He never answered. He never showed up. By the time it was over, my baby was gone. He had knelt by my hospital bed, shaking violently, sobbing and apologizing over and over. And I believed him. I thought he was truly drowning in guilt. "To be honest, whenever Sean was with me before, he always used protection," Hannah continued softly, as if sharing a trivial secret. "It wasn't until Lynn lost her baby that we decided to have one." "This baby... was meant to make it up to you, Lynn." Tears welled in her eyes. "I won't fight you for him. As long as you let me see him from a distance once in a while, that's enough." I turned to Sean, my voice trembling with disgust. "You expect me to raise your bastard child?" Sean frowned. "What's wrong with that?" He looked at me as if I were the unreasonable one. "Your body took a huge hit after the miscarriage, and the doctors said you might never carry a child again." "My parents have been breathing down our necks for a grandchild. Doesn't this solve everyone's problems?" He paused, adding smoothly: "I had it all planned out. Once the boy gets a little older, we'd finalize the adoption papers through an agency and tell everyone we adopted him." "It was supposed to be a surprise for you. I didn't expect you to find out on your own." A surprise? Looking at his entitled, unbothered face, bile rose in my throat. He wanted me to raise his mistress's child, and he called it a surprise? I took a step back, putting distance between us. "Sean Miller." My voice was so deadpan it didn't even sound like me. "I want a divorce."Sean's face fell. He reached out to grab my arm. "Lynn, stop throwing a tantrum." His tone carried that familiar, condescending patience. "You're the only wife I'll ever have." "I was wrong about the deed. I'll buy you an even bigger house, I promise." Hannah chimed in from behind him, sounding utterly wronged. "Lynn, you should count your blessings." "Sean really loves you. Otherwise, we wouldn't have waited this long to have a baby." "Don't worry, I won't try to take him away from you." Sean shot her a sympathetic, reassuring look. A wave of nausea hit me. I jerked my arm out of his grip. "Don't touch me!" "You make me sick." "Who are you calling sick?" A sharp, grating voice cut through the air. I turned to see my mother-in-law, Barbara, stepping out of a black sedan, her face thunderous. My mom hurried over to greet her. "Barbara, what are you doing here?" Hannah whispered: "I texted her earlier saying I missed her. I didn't think she'd actually come." Barbara's scowl instantly melted into a warm smile. She walked over and stroked Hannah's hair. "The baby is safe and sound at my place, sleeping like an angel." Watching their cozy little family dynamic, my chest tightened until I couldn't breathe. "So... you knew all along?" Barbara scoffed, glaring at me with utter contempt. "How else do you think Eleanor pulled off faking her death so flawlessly?" She sighed, glancing at my mom. "I really feel sorry for you, Eleanor, having a daughter like this." "Aggressive and bossy. Instead of staying home and taking care of her husband, she's out in court every day parading around for attention." When Barbara turned back to me, her eyes were like ice. "You can forget about a divorce." "The Miller family has a reputation to uphold. We won't be made a laughingstock." Sean frowned slightly. "Mom, that's enough." I shook with fury, digging my nails into my palms until they bled. "I'm divorcing him whether you like it or not." "You think you have a say?" Barbara whipped out her phone and quickly typed a message. Seconds later, my phone buzzed in my purse. A notification popped up—I had been terminated from my law firm, effective immediately. "Let's see how arrogant you are now," Barbara smirked, tilting her chin up. Beside her, Sean looked away, cowardly refusing to meet my eyes. He knew being a lawyer was my life's purpose. Even after everything collapsed five years ago, even when my mental health was in shambles, I never once thought about leaving the firm. And now, he stood right there, watching his mother destroy the one thing I cared about most. Without a single word of protest. Barbara pulled a compact mirror from her purse and shoved it in my face. "Look at yourself." In the small glass, I saw a woman with tangled, snowy-white hair and a hollow, exhausted face. For a second, I didn't even recognize myself. "You're withered and washed up. You don't deserve my son." "He's the only one willing to tolerate you. Who else would ever want you looking like this?" Staring at my reflection, a wave of disorientation washed over me. Where did the sharp, brilliant attorney who once dominated the courtroom go? "If we can't settle this amicably, I'll see you in court." I slapped the mirror away, my voice eerily calm. I knew the excuses and insults behind me were just traps meant to drag me back into this toxic marriage. I didn't care anymore. I turned on my heel and walked away. I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't touched in years. "Sam. After that high-profile case five years ago, you told me you owed me a favor." I took a shaky breath. "Does that offer still stand?"There were two seconds of silence on the other end. "Always." Only when I started looking for legal representation did I realize how ruthless Sean and his family truly were. I made seventeen phone calls. Every single attorney hung up the second they heard I was suing Sean Miller for divorce. A close colleague finally told me the truth: "Lynn, it's not that we don't want to help. The Miller family put the word out across the city. Anyone who takes your case is picking a fight with the entire local Bar Association." When Sam heard this, his jaw clenched. "Do you want me to pull some strings?" I shook my head. "Just help me dig up the evidence." "I'll represent myself." I was too naive. On the day of the hearing, the judge dismissed every piece of my evidence on grounds of 'unlawful acquisition.' I lost the case. As I walked out through the heavy bronze courthouse doors, a rotten egg shattered against my temple. "Heard she's the one who cheated! Got caught red-handed in bed and still had the nerve to drag her husband to court!" I looked up. A hostile crowd was waiting by the steps. Most of them were disgruntled opponents and shady characters from cases I had prosecuted over the years. "She probably slept her way through law school! Whichever scumbag pays the most gets her loyalty!" "Disgusting whore! Doing whatever it takes for dirty money!" "I heard she even brought bad luck that got her own mother killed! Stay away from that jinx..." More rotten vegetables and garbage rained down on me. Sean stood just a few yards away. The moment he tried to step forward, his mother grabbed his arm. "Let her learn a lesson." Barbara didn't even bother keeping her voice down. "She needs to realize that without the Millers, she's nothing. Then she'll come crawling back where she belongs." He stopped dead in his tracks. He stood there, watching a mob slander and humiliate me, without taking another step. Right then, Hannah came sprinting out from the crowd. "Lynn, please, I'm begging you! Give me my baby back!" She clamped onto my arm, sobbing hysterically. She thrust her phone into the air, displaying a grainy surveillance clip. In the video, a blurry figure carrying an infant hurried out of an alley—wearing the exact same trench coat I was wearing today. "Just because you lost the lawsuit, how could you kidnap my baby to get back at Sean?" Hannah choked on her sobs, nearly hyperventilating. "He's just an innocent baby!" The crowd erupted in fury. Sean shoved his way through the mob, pulling Hannah behind him and glaring at me with raw hatred. "Lynn, if you have an issue, come at me!" "What kind of monster targets a defenseless child?" His voice shook with rage. "Where is he? Tell me!" He shoved me hard, sending me crashing against the freezing marble wall. "I didn't take your baby." "Fine. You're not talking?" Sean's eyes turned dead and merciless. "Take her." Two burly bodyguards grabbed my arms, dragging me away. I fought wildly, barely managing to hit 'send location' on my phone before someone snatched it and smashed it to pieces on the pavement. I was thrown onto the cold concrete floor of a windowless basement, my hands and feet bound tightly with coarse rope. "I'm asking you one last time. Where is the baby?" My voice was hoarse. "I didn't take him. How the hell would I know?" The last shred of restraint drained from Sean's face. "Fine." He looked down at me coldly, turning to the two thugs. "Do whatever it takes to make her talk." He paused, adding flatly, "Dead or alive. I don't care." The second the words left his mouth, a heavy boot slammed into my stomach. Agony ripped through my body. Before I could even catch my breath, another blow struck my ribs. Sean paused at the doorway, his back to me. "I never wanted to hurt you, Lynn. I really didn't." "You brought this on yourself." The heavy metal door slammed shut. Darkness swallowed me whole.
