It was my son’s elementary school Field Day. My husband, Marcus, had promised to join us, but he had been completely unreachable for the past two hours. My son and I were left standing under the scorching sun, drenched in sweat. Just then, my best friend, Sarah, sent me a dashcam video clip on Snapchat. Sitting in Marcus’s passenger seat was his newly hired assistant, Chloe. The two of them were intimately sharing a peeled grape, leaning in incredibly close. Right at that moment, a little student reporter from the school news team ran over and shoved a microphone right in front of my seven-year-old son’s face. "Hey, Leo! Your dad didn't show up today. Are you really sad?" Leo wiped the sweat from his forehead and shook his head. His voice echoed across the entire sports field through the giant speakers. "I’m not sad. Because Daddy is doing something very hard." "Yesterday, I secretly saw Daddy playing a game with a pretty lady in his car. “ “The lady was sitting on Daddy’s lap. Daddy must have been helping her check her teeth because she was hurting. He’s just too busy." The music playing over the field suddenly stopped. Hundreds of parents turned their heads in unison, staring directly at me. I listened to my son's words with a blank expression, then looked down at him. "Leo, Daddy broke his promise. What did Mommy tell you about people who break their promises?" Seven-year-old Leo looked up at me. His cheeks were flushed red from his recent run. He thought about it seriously, then spoke clearly into the reporter’s microphone: "We should never believe them again!" The reporter, a fifth-grade girl, had clearly never dealt with a situation like this. She looked terrified, quickly pulled the microphone back, and turned to look at the supervising teacher. The teacher coughed awkwardly, running over to smooth things over. "Leo’s mom, you know how kids just make things up. Um, the award ceremony is up next." I stood up straight and gave the teacher a polite nod. "I’m sorry, Mrs. Gable. Leo got a bit of heat stroke after his fifty-meter sprint. We’re going to skip the rest of the events and head home." "Of course, of course. Please take him home to rest." I took Leo’s hand. Under the watchful eyes of hundreds of people, I walked him step-by-step off the field. The crowd automatically parted to make a path for us. Whispers drifted into my ears. "Oh my god, cheating so openly these days?" "His wife has amazing self-control. I would have lost my mind right there." Once we reached the car, I opened the door. Leo climbed into his booster seat, buckled himself in routinely, and stared at my face. "Mommy, did I get us in trouble?" I looked at him through the rearview mirror. His eyes were dark and clear. They didn't look like Marcus’s at all. They looked like mine. "Did you really see Daddy and that lady in the car yesterday?" I asked. "Yes," Leo nodded. "Yesterday afternoon, Daddy picked me up from tutoring. He said he had to wait in the car for a client." "But then that lady showed up. Daddy told me to play with my iPad in the back seat, and she sat in the passenger seat." Leo described the scene with perfect clarity. "Then she got onto Daddy’s lap. Daddy had his arm around her waist. They were talking in very low voices, but they were super close." Leo pouted. "They thought I was watching cartoons with my headphones on, but my iPad had actually run out of battery." My hands tightened on the steering wheel. The anger that should have consumed me slowly turned into cold calculation. Yesterday afternoon, Marcus had told me that a client had rescheduled at the last minute. He said he had to take them out for coffee and would pick up Leo on the way back. It turned out the "client" was his new assistant, and the "coffee" was served in his car. The woman my son mentioned was Chloe. She had joined Marcus’s department just last month as his personal assistant. A couple of weeks ago, I had dropped by their office. Since it was a hot day, I ordered thirty cups of iced coffee and had them delivered to Marcus’s department as an afternoon treat. Everyone had thanked me politely. Except for Chloe. Right in front of my face, she tossed her cup of coffee straight into the trash can next to her desk. "Mr. Miller told me I shouldn't drink this kind of cheap coffee. It’s too bitter." She had smiled sweetly, but her eyes held a direct challenge. "Jane, didn't Marcus mention that to you?" Just then, Marcus had walked out of his office and rushed over to smooth things over. "Chloe just graduated. She’s young and speaks without thinking. She actually has a weak stomach and can't drink coffee. Don't take it personally." I was thirty-two years old and had spent eight years climbing the corporate ladder. Before having Leo, I was a regional manager for a Fortune 500 company. Did he really think I couldn't see through a little girl's cheap provocation? I just hadn't expected Marcus to be stupid enough to be this blatant. "Leo," I started the car. "Today on the field, you said those things into the microphone on purpose, didn't you?" Leo didn't say anything. He just looked down, fidgeting with his seatbelt buckle. After a moment, he mumbled, "That lady is a bad person.""Last time I went to Daddy’s office, I was playing with Legos under his desk. I heard her saying bad things about you to Daddy." "She said you were getting old, that you weren't good enough for Daddy, and that it was embarrassing for him to take you out." Leo looked up at me, his eyes welled with tears. "Mommy, I don't like her. And I don't like Daddy right now either." A seven-year-old child could easily sense a grown-up’s kindness or malice. He was using his own way to express his anger, and he had just sounded the alarm for me. "Good job, buddy." "What do you want for lunch? Mommy’s taking you somewhere nice." Leo’s eyes lit up instantly. "I want Pizza Hut!" By the time we finished lunch and got back home, it was already two in the afternoon. I tucked Leo in for his nap, then walked out to the balcony. I pulled up the dashcam video Sarah had sent me. Sarah ran a used-car business and was also the authorized mechanic for Marcus’s company cars. This morning, Marcus had dropped his car off for routine maintenance, planning to pick it up after the Field Day ended. While performing a standard inspection, one of Sarah’s mechanics had accidentally seen some highly questionable footage on the dashcam. The camera captured the interior of the car. Marcus was in the driver's seat, and Chloe was in the passenger seat. Chloe peeled a grape, bit it in half, then leaned over to feed the other half into Marcus’s mouth. Marcus laughed, playfully dodging at first, before biting down on the grape and kissing her fingers. "Marcus, are you really going to that stupid Field Day today?" Chloe’s voice was dripping with sweetness. "What's so fun about a school event anyway? You promised you’d take me to the dentist today." Marcus sighed. "I have to. Jane insisted I go, saying Leo has been looking forward to it for weeks. I’ll just show my face, take a couple of photos, and leave. “ “I pushed my afternoon meetings so I can spend the rest of the day with you." "Well, you better hurry. My wisdom tooth is killing me, I couldn't even sleep last night. If you don't come with me, I’m going to cry." "Okay, okay, babe. I promise." The video cut off there. There were no overly explicit scenes, but their familiar tone and natural physical contact already explained everything. I closed the video and texted Sarah on Snapchat: Thanks. Sarah replied instantly: What are you going to do? Throw the video in his face? I can bring a couple of guys from the shop to help you kick his ass! No need, I typed back. This video only proves they have an ambiguous relationship. It doesn't prove anything substantial legally. If I show him now, he’ll just say they were joking and accuse me of invading his privacy. So you're just going to take this? Jane, that doesn't sound like you at all! Before I could reply, I heard the lock turn. Marcus pushed the door open, covered in sweat. The top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, and he looked completely exhausted. As soon as he walked in, he headed straight for the fridge, grabbed a bottle of cold water, and downed half of it. Then he walked out to the balcony to join me. "Jane, I am so, so sorry." His face was filled with guilt, his voice incredibly sincere. "Right when I was about to leave this morning, the VP called an emergency Zoom meeting." "You know how the company is restructuring this year. My promotion to director is at a critical stage, and I really couldn't walk away." He stepped closer, trying to put his arm around my shoulder. "Leo isn't mad, is he? Tell him I'm sorry. I'll take him to Disneyland this weekend." I stepped aside, avoiding his touch, and asked casually. "An emergency meeting?" "Yeah, a video call with the Chicago headquarters. It dragged on for over three hours." Marcus sighed. "I didn't even have time for lunch." "Was this meeting in the conference room, or at the dental clinic?"Marcus’s expression froze. He quickly realized what I meant, a flash of panic crossing his eyes. But he immediately forced a confused look onto his face. "What dental clinic? Who have you been talking to?" "No one." I walked over to the living room and sat down on the couch, looking at him with a half-smile. "You probably don't know yet, but Leo said something over the school microphone today in front of all the teachers, parents, and students." "He said you were playing a game in your car with a pretty lady yesterday, and that she was sitting on your lap. He said you must have been helping her check her teeth." Marcus stood there, dumbfounded. It took him a long time to process what I had just said. "He... where did he say that?" "On the field, over the loudspeakers, in front of hundreds of people." I watched his face turn from red to pale as I continued. "The VP’s son is in Leo’s grade, right?" "The VP’s wife was standing right next to me today. She heard every single word." Marcus cared about his public image and his bosses' opinions more than anything. Hearing this, he completely panicked. "That little brat is talking nonsense!" "When did I ever let anyone sit on my lap? This is slander!" "Yesterday afternoon when you picked him up," I said coldly, watching his performance. "He said the lady’s name was Chloe. Your new assistant." Marcus gasped, finding himself completely speechless. He knew this wasn't something he could easily brush off. "Jane, let me explain." Marcus rushed over and knelt in front of the couch. He looked up at me, quickly deploying his most practiced, manipulative tone. "Yesterday afternoon, when I went to pick up Leo, Chloe happened to need a ride to run an errand." "Kids don't understand. When she got into the car, she tripped and accidentally fell onto me." "Leo was in the back seat, so his angle was probably blocked. As for the dentist, she just mentioned her wisdom tooth was inflamed and asked if I knew any good clinics nearby. I was just giving her directions!" He spoke faster and smoother, almost convincing himself. "Would you seriously believe a seven-year-old’s wild imagination over your own husband?" "I bust my ass every day for this family, taking so much crap at work. Not only do you not appreciate it, but you're also doubting me over nothing?" He was trying to gaslight me. "Is that so?" I stood up, looking down at Marcus with a cold sneer. "Then how do you explain the smell of dental antiseptic on you?" "You didn't just give her directions. You actually went into the clinic with her, didn't you?" The slight relief that had just appeared on Marcus’s face instantly vanished, his muscles tensing up again. "Don't overthink it. I probably picked up that smell in the office restroom." "I’m going to take a shower. I’ll cook steak for you and Leo tonight." He turned and walked into the bathroom. As soon as the shower started running, I walked to the entryway. I pulled his suit jacket from the hanger and searched the pockets. I quickly found a folded receipt. City Dental Hospital. Wisdom tooth extraction and anti-inflammatory treatment: $1,250. Paid by: Marcus Miller. I snapped a photo of the receipt, saved it, and put it right back where I found it.The next day was Saturday. To make up for yesterday’s disaster and cover his tracks, Marcus suggested taking Leo and me to an expensive seafood buffet on the top floor of a downtown mall. "I’ve been so busy lately and haven't spent enough time with you guys. Today is on me. Leo, get whatever you want." Marcus acted like the perfect family man on the drive over. Leo sat in the back, staring at his iPad. Without looking up, he mumbled, "Thanks, Dad." His tone was even colder than mine. Marcus rubbed his nose awkwardly, trying to change the subject. He turned to me. "Jane, your company’s project is wrapped up, right?" "You don't need to work so hard anymore. Women need to take care of themselves. Look at you, your skin is looking a bit dry lately." I honestly hadn't been in the mood to pamper myself. Since having Leo, I had resigned from my high-paying corporate job and transitioned into working as a part-time consultant to have a flexible schedule. My income was still decent, but most of my energy went into taking care of our home and our son. Meanwhile, Marcus was in his prime years, surrounded by twenty-something girls at his office. "It is a bit dry," I said, glancing at him. "Maybe I should book a hydration facial appointment?" Marcus let out a forced laugh, quickly backtracking. "Actually, maybe not. Those treatments can have side effects. It’s better to just age naturally." He was clearly just cheap. I didn't say another word. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated at a table by the window. Just as Marcus went to grab some oysters, a high-pitched, sweet voice echoed next to our table. "Oh, Mr. Miller! What a coincidence! Are you here with your family?" I looked up. It was Chloe. She was wearing a floral slip dress today, her makeup flawless. She walked right up to our table. Clearly, this "coincidence" was entirely staged. She must have tracked Marcus’s location or seen his calendar, purposely following him here. Her tactics were cheap, but highly irritating. Marcus walked back with a plate of oysters, his face stiffening when he saw Chloe. "Chloe? What are you doing here?" "I’m just shopping with a friend," Chloe replied smoothly, then actively turned to address me. "Jane, it’s been a while. Why does your skin look so tired?" "Marcus always tells us how you handle everything at home so he can focus on work. But you really shouldn't neglect your looks. You look so much older than him." Marcus’s face darkened, and he frantically signaled Chloe with his eyes. "Your friend must be waiting. You should head back." "What’s the rush? I want to raise a glass to Jane." Chloe pulled out Marcus’s empty chair and casually picked up a drink from the table. "Jane, let me tell you something funny. Last time I went to Marcus's friend's party with him, his friends almost mistook me for his wife." She covered her mouth, giggling. "It’s honestly hilarious. How could I ever be as... down-to-earth as you?" Before I could speak, Leo, who had been quietly eating a crab leg, looked up and stared at Chloe. "Are you a homewrecker?" Leo asked, his big eyes blinking with pure innocence. Chloe’s smile froze. "Kid, what are you talking about?" "Because you smell exactly like one," Leo said seriously. "And why are you sitting in my dad’s chair? This is our family's table. Don't you have your own family?" "Leo!" Marcus barked, his face turning red. "How dare you speak to her like that!" "Marcus, why are you yelling at our son?" I put down my fork and looked at him coldly. "Did he say anything wrong? Your assistant comes to our table, pretends to toast, and doesn't even know how to keep a respectful distance." "Is this your company's culture? Teaching female employees to throw themselves at married bosses?"
