第1章
My wife, Lily Tanner, is a mortician. She's trying to avoid getting fired during her pregnancy, so she keeps locking herself in the morgue.
I may be her husband and colleague, but even I am not allowed inside.
I don't want her to work too hard, so in the middle of the night, I sneak into the morgue to do her checks for her.
However, she reacts by going berserk and sounding the alarm.
Ever since then, I've been very careful around her, fearing that it may affect her pregnancy.
Later on, with Lily repeatedly receiving praise from the deceased's family, our department decides to hold a commendation ceremony for her.
The whole family seems relieved.
However, as soon as Lily receives her award, I ask her for a divorce.
The room instantly falls silent.
Tearing off the medal on her chest, she complains in a wounded tone, "I'm working myself to the bone even when I'm pregnant, and I'm doing all this to give our child a better life. You're worried that I'll outperform you and overtake you as the top mortician in the industry, aren't you?"
I look away from her, a cold smile forming on my lips. "Spend the rest of your life with those bodies, then. I don't want the child anymore, and I'm definitely divorcing you."
Chapter 1
The wounded expression instantly froze on Lily Tanner's face.
At that moment, her eyes, which had made my heart ache for a decade, were filled with disbelief.
She subconsciously put a hand on her belly as she shouted at me in a sobbing voice, "Andrew Conway! Are you out of your mind? How could you say such things on an occasion like this?"
Criticism came at me from all directions. Some people even whipped out their phones to take photos.
Someone said, "Andrew, Lily is still pregnant. How could you do this to her?"
Another person said, "Exactly. Why couldn't you have said this at home instead? Do you really have to stir up such trouble on an important occasion like this?"
Someone else said, "Lily has been nothing but nice to you. How heartless can you be?"
Accusations came one after another, piercing into me like countless needles.
I knew that.
In everyone's eyes, I was the ungrateful jerk who was jealous of my own wife.
After all, Lily had always been putting on the act of the good wife who was hardworking, kind, and extremely thoughtful of her husband.
When she came home from work early in the morning, she would even prepare breakfast for the whole family.
Her parents always criticized me. They said I didn't care enough about her, and that I had actually allowed their precious daughter to keep working even while she was pregnant.
On top of that, they would say that I had married the best wife anyone could ever ask for.
But I didn't care about all that anymore.
I pried her fingers off of me, insistent on leaving.
Just then, a figure rushed up to us and stood right in front of Lily, shielding her.
It was her younger brother, and also the new intern at our workplace, Kyle Tanner.
"Andrew, how inhumane can you be?" Kyle sounded even more worked up than Lily did. The veins on his forehead throbbed as he continued, "Lily is still pregnant, and she's worked herself to the bone for our family. She's practically holed up in the morgue all day! But instead of feeling bad for her, you're asking her for a divorce right now, of all times? What kind of man are you?"
As he spoke, he carefully held Lily's arm. He immediately switched to a gentle tone when he said to her, "Lily, it's okay. There's no point in staying with a heartless man like him."
Lily leaned into Kyle's arms, tears streaming continuously down her face.
Kyle's face was turning red in anger and indignation. "Lily was so nice to you, but you just had to hurt her like that, huh? Listen here, Andrew. If something happens to her, I won't have mercy on you!"
I scoffed as I glanced at Lily. "Could you swear that the things you did in the morgue were all part of a mortician's job description?"
My words seemed to have struck a nerve, for Lily's face instantly turned pale.
She subconsciously tightened her grip on Kyle's arm, a look of panic flashing across her eyes.
Kyle immediately pulled Lily behind him.
Then, he got right in my face and started shouting at me.
Chapter 2
Kyle shouted, "Andrew, how could you slander Lily like that? She was working overtime in the morgue for the sake of her job and family! You couldn't do it yourself, so you're making malicious assumptions about her, aren't you? How pathetic! You're not even fit to be a man, let alone a mortician!"
I scoffed as I glanced at Lily's pale face. "Sure, Lily's the only person in this world who's fit to be a mortician. No wonder she's still in the morgue late at night every day. But as for whether she's actually working in there, I suppose she herself knows the answer best."
With that, I turned around to leave.
Just then, a commotion rang out from the crowd.
My father-in-law, Mike Tanner, was making his way here with a grave look on his face.
He was one of the veteran leaders of the workplace, and he was distinguished and highly respected.
But at that moment, he was shaking with anger as he pointed a finger at me. "I can't believe how wrong I was about you! Lily is pregnant, but instead of taking care of her at home, you're humiliating her in public!
"She worked overtime into the wee hours of the morning, but when she came back, she even made meals for you. When you had a fever, she stayed right next to your bed and didn't sleep a wink all night. She even pulled all-nighters last year just to organize the materials for your professional title evaluation!
"She did so much for you, but you just had to ruin her in front of everyone on a day like this. Come on, tell us. You've already gotten yourself a mistress, and you've been planning to abandon Lily and her child, haven't you?"
Our colleagues began to whisper among themselves as well.
"Dad, please don't talk about Andrew like that. He doesn't mean it." Lily tried to calm Mike down, but she only cried harder. "It's my fault for being too busy at work and overlooking his feelings. It's only natural that he's upset about it."
Mike glared at me. "My daughter poured her heart and soul into this family, but you're cheating on her! I swear, if you ever dare mention divorce again, I'll drive you out of the Tanner family and make sure you don't get even a single penny from us!"
I looked coldly at Lily, my gaze filled with disappointment as I said, "You're always saying you have to work overtime. You know very well what exactly you're doing in that morgue, don't you?"
Lily was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion as she threw herself at me. "Can we please not get divorced? I know you like Jane Woods from the next office, but our baby will be born soon!"
She sobbed as she shoved at me. Her nails scraped across my arm, leaving behind a few bloody scratches.
I staggered backward, my back bumping into a corner of a table behind me. A dull pain spread throughout my body.
I had suffered an injury in that spot a few months ago. Lily had been mulling over work, and she got distracted while she was driving. I had ended up with that injury when I was saving her from that accident.
Kyle hastily supported Lily, then turned around and glared viciously at me. "How dare you dodge her! Lily is pregnant, for goodness' sake! Aren't you worried that she might get hurt?"
Lily leaned into Kyle's arms, wailing at the top of her lungs, "I knew you don't love me anymore. You're even abandoning our child for the sake of that woman!"
Enduring the pain, I straightened up and said in a cold voice, "No matter what, I'm divorcing you."
Lily whipped her head up. There was a hint of panic in her gaze as she said, "Andrew, please, I can explain! I know I was too worked up just now. I just didn't want to lose you."
Breaking free from Kyle's grasp, she hurried up to me.
She tried to touch my injury, but I dodged her.
Her hand froze in the air, and her eyes instantly reddened. "Andrew, I know Kyle sounded harsh just now, but he's just trying to protect me. He's still young, and he doesn't know any better. Please don't hold it against him."
I scoffed. "It's fine. I just want to get divorced."
Lily bit her lip as tears started streaming down her face again. "Andrew, we've been together for a decade. You said I'm the only person you'd ever cherish for the rest of your life."
Chapter 3
Lily turned to Mike and said pleadingly, "Dad, please talk to Andrew. I know he doesn't really want a divorce. He's just not thinking straight right now."
Mike let out a heavy snort, but he did indeed soften his tone. "Andrew, after everything Lily has said, can't you just swallow your pride and apologize? She's pregnant, and she's emotionally unstable. Would it kill you to just give in to her a little?
"Also, Kyle is young and hot-headed, and you can't blame him for trying to protect his sister. You're a grown man, so stop being so petty."
Lily's best friend, Evelyn Gray, had somehow joined the crowd as well. "Lily has been so good to you, so what are you even complaining about? You've got nothing better to do, have you? You're just looking for trouble!"
Wiping her tears, Lily choked and said, "Andrew, I know you've been stressed at work lately. If you're going through a hard time, you can share the burden with me. Don't suffer in silence, okay? And please, don't use divorce to hurt me. We still have a child together. Please give me another chance, even if it's just for the sake of the child, okay?"
She reached out to take my hand, her gaze filled with deep affection.
But I simply shook off her hand. The pain from the injury only cleared my head further. "You know very well why I'm asking for a divorce. Also, can you drop that act? It's making me sick."
Lily looked as if she had just suffered a massive blow. Her body swayed a little, and she almost fell onto the floor.
"Andrew! You've gone too far!" Mike was so furious that he was foaming at the mouth. "Lily is literally begging you, but you still won't change your mind, huh? You're dead set on cheating on her, aren't you? Fine, go ahead and divorce her then! Lily is a wonderful woman. She can find a better man after divorcing you!"
Sobbing, Lily grabbed Mike's arm and tried to stop him. "Dad, please don't say that. I don't want a divorce. I still love Andrew!"
Pulling Lily behind her, Evelyn pointed a finger at me and shouted, "Why would you stay with a heartless jerk like him? He just wants to find an excuse to dump you now that you're pregnant. He's trying to elope with that homewrecker! Listen here. You have to divorce him, and he must leave with nothing to his name!"
Mike shook Lily off and turned around. "Andrew, you're hopeless! I'm going to report this to the higher-ups. A morally corrupt man like you is nowhere near worthy of being a mortician!"
Lily hastily stopped Mike.
She was crying as she secretly observed my reaction.
I scoffed silently to myself.
She was playing hard to get, and she was using that tactic to force me into compromising.
At the same time, she could also maintain her kind and gracious image in public.
Unfortunately for her, she was severely mistaken.
I replied indifferently, "I've been thinking of quitting for a while now. There's no need to trouble yourself, Mr. Tanner."
With that, I ignored them and walked right through the crowd, headed toward the entrance.
Lily screamed and sobbed behind me in a shrill voice. "Andrew, have you forgotten your vow? You said you'd love and protect me for the rest of your life."
"The vow?" I thought. "How pathetic. She certainly didn't remember the vow during all those times she locked herself up in the morgue and lied to me."
The whispers around me grew even louder.
Someone even called the police and reported that there was "domestic violence against a pregnant woman" and "marital infidelity" going on here.
Camera flashes went off one after another as people took clear photos of my face.
I knew without a doubt that I would become the joke of the whole city tomorrow.
Mike was dragging Lily outside. "Don't waste your breath on a jerk like him. Let's sue him in court and destroy his reputation!"
Chapter 4
As Lily was being dragged outside, she made sure to turn and look at me.
She had a wounded look of despair in her eyes. "Andrew, are you really going to do this to me?"
Instead of responding, I simply watched them walk away with a cold look in my eyes.
In the chaos, Kyle suddenly dashed toward me with a raised fist. He didn't even hesitate as he brought it down upon me. "How dare you treat my sister like that! I'm not letting you off that easily! I'll kill you!"
The people around us screamed and scattered away.
Someone stepped forward to stop the fight, but the situation was already spiraling out of control.
In the confusion, I felt someone shoving me, and I ended up ramming against a corner of a table again.
But this time, blood instantly flowed from my forehead and blocked my vision.
"Murder! Andrew is beating someone up!" Evelyn stoked the flames from the sidelines as she screamed in a piercing voice.
By the time I broke free, the sound of police sirens was already drawing near.
I pressed a hand against my bleeding forehead. When I saw Lily being protected by the police, I knew that this incident had gotten way out of hand.
For the next few days, I found myself at the center of the storm.
My photos and personal information were leaked, and everyone on the internet was cursing at me.
Meanwhile, Lily kept releasing so-called evidence.
Photos of me going home late at night were described as me having gone out to see my mistress.
A video of me discussing something at work with a female colleague was trimmed so that the crucial details were left out. Hence, it was described as intimate behavior.
Lily even went to the hospital and filed for an official injury assessment. The injuries she had suffered from falling down somehow turned into injuries I had inflicted on her.
Evelyn led several people to my house, where they banged on the front door and cursed at me, shouting for me to get out of this city.
I didn't argue my case. Instead, I quietly gathered evidence and waited for the day of the court hearing.
Finally, the day of the hearing arrived.
Reporters and curious crowds were gathered outside the courtroom.
Lily was pushed out in a wheelchair by Kyle.
Her face was pale, and she had a weak look in her eyes. She was the very picture of a victim.
Mike and Evelyn were right beside her as they accused me of my crimes on camera.
"That's him! He cheated on his wife and even abused her!" Evelyn pointed at me as she shouted at the livestream camera, "Everyone, take a good look at this piece of trash who beat up his pregnant wife!"
Comments flooded the livestream.
A user wrote, "What an animal! He must be brought to justice!"
Another user commented, "Poor Ms. Tanner. She chose the wrong person to love."
Someone else wrote, "I support Ms. Tanner in asserting her rights. Make him leave without a penny!"
Yet another user commented, "People like him don't deserve to be morticians. He's an absolute disgrace to the industry!"
When I was led into the courtroom by the court officers, the scar on my forehead was still clearly visible.
Lily's eyes reddened as soon as she saw me.
She sobbed pitifully, telling the judge, "Your Honor, I may have lost my child and ruined my health, but I still love him. I really don't want to divorce him."
The judge rapped the gavel and told her to present her evidence.
Lily's lawyer presented a stack of photos, videos, and official injury assessments.
Every piece of evidence was pointing at me being "the jerk who cheated on his wife and beat her up".
When it was my turn to make my statement, I stood up. My gaze swept across the courtroom, then eventually settled on Lily and Kyle, who were clinging to each other.
"I didn't cheat on her, nor did I hurt her." My voice was clear and calm as I spoke over the noise in the courtroom. "Lily was slandering me with those cheating accusations. She claimed I abused her, but she actually staged the whole thing."
Lily immediately screamed, "Nonsense! Do you even have any evidence?"
I retrieved a USB flash drive from my bag and held it above my head. I had a piercing gaze as I said, "Here's some footage of what Lily had done in the morgue."
