On the night of our anniversary, my fiancé, Don Vincent, pressed me hard against the cold glass of his penthouse window. He roughly hiked up my dress, his large hands gripping my bare hips. With one forceful, possessive thrust, he drove himself deep inside me. His hot breath scorched my neck, making me feel completely, utterly his. But the second we crashed from that blinding high, the illusion shattered. He pulled out of me, stepping back to casually adjust his suit. "Baby, fucking you is addictive. But our wedding... I'm not going." I froze, stunned. "What do you mean?" He chuckled, casually lighting a cigarette. "I've set my sights on Isla, the princess of the Irish Vance Family. She's not exactly the mistress type. We signed the papers at the courthouse this morning." "As her legal husband, she'd get jealous if I threw a public wedding with another woman." My ears rang. My voice trembled uncontrollably. "Why? Our wedding is in a week..." His tone was apologetic, almost innocent. "Baby, I made you who you are. You know I love you the most. But the Family needs to expand." "If you don't want to cancel the wedding, just find some idiot to stand at the altar with you. Don't be too hard on yourself." I stared at the face I had loved for years. My heart turned to absolute ash. Shaking, I shoved the pregnancy test results deep into my pocket. He was right. I shouldn't be hard on myself. Leaving his office, I took out my burner phone and dialed another man's number. Just as he wished, I would vanish from his world forever. …… Vincent slapped my ass like nothing happened, carrying me into the bathroom like he always did. He set me on the vanity, but his next words made my blood run cold. "That little Irish princess, Isla? I've been chasing her for six months. She finally gave in yesterday. Right here in this bathroom, I finally fucked her." Following his satisfied gaze, my eyes snapped to the mirror. Overlapping, suggestive handprints were crystal clear on the glass. The image of that haughty Irish princess pinned against this mirror exploded in my mind. My stomach violently churned. I gripped the edge of the sink, my eyes burning red. He told me once. He built this bathroom for me. It was only meant for me. He cupped my bloodless face, a frown of confusion forming between his brows. "Why are you crying? I married her, but you can still stay by my side." His deep, affectionate eyes reflected only me. As if he wasn't the same man who just casually announced his marriage to someone else. A tearing sense of absurdity washed over me. The air grew thin, and I was suffocating. He finally let out a helpless sigh. "I know you're upset. But I need her family's shipping routes. I'll buy you a penthouse. I'll still come see you. Be a good girl, okay?" Six months... Six months ago, on my birthday, he said he wanted to give me a wedding. A real title. I felt so lucky. I watched him prepare the island wedding I always wanted. The flowers. The invitations. But behind my back, he was desperately courting another woman. I closed my eyes. Tears fell uncontrollably. "Vincent," my voice sounded dry and numb. "We're done." He froze for a second. Then, he laughed out loud. "Done?" He grabbed my shoulders. "Alessia, what are you talking about? I pulled you out of the gutter when you were eighteen. For ten years, you've gathered intel for me, killed for me, taken bullets for me, even lost a child for me. How could you ever leave me?" I stared at him. My heart felt like it was rolling over red-hot coals. I had been with him for ten years. From assassin to lover, then to fiancée. We once hid in a shipping container at the docks during a rival family's attack, splitting a stale crust of bread. I took a bullet for him. That bullet cost me our first child. That night, he knelt by my bed with red eyes, carving an "A" into his own chest. "Alessia, my heart and my future are yours. You're my only woman. We'll have another baby." I had carved that heavy promise deeply into my own soul, too. But now, he shattered those vows without a second thought. I just couldn't understand. He loved me so fiercely. How could he betray me so easily? A second later, the phone on the desk rang. A familiar, custom ringtone. It had gone off many times in the middle of the night. Vincent always said it was for a "crucial ally". Now I realized how stupid I was. What kind of crucial ally would call him every time they felt lonely late at night? He didn't pick up right away. He just looked at me calmly. "Alessia. I told you I love you. You're the sharpest tool I have. I won't throw away ten years of history. But right now, there is a more important woman." He turned and walked out to put on his shirt. "You can never be the future Donna. Clean yourself up. I need to go get my wife." The office door slammed shut. I stood there. Warm liquid was still running down my thighs. I let the showerhead run, washing away the traces he left inside me, washing away the tears on my face. When I finally got dressed, I reached into my pocket and felt the pregnancy test. Eight weeks pregnant. I had wanted to tell him tonight. I imagined he'd hold me tight, promising to protect our baby this time. Clearly, I was completely delusional. It wasn't until I left the Devaro Family's building that the true emptiness crashed into my chest, and I dialed an encrypted number. Since he had another woman by his side, I would vanish from his world forever.

An hour later, I returned to the penthouse we had shared for three years. The second I walked in, I heard heavy moans coming from the bedroom. I froze, my knuckles turning white on the door handle. "What did you call me?" "Boss..." "Say it again. Do you like how your husband fucks you?" "Honey, I love you..." I stood outside the door, trembling all over. Like a glutton for punishment, I stood there letting my heart shatter piece by piece, waiting for a whole hour until the sounds finally stopped. When Vincent walked out of the bedroom with his arm around Isla, she immediately played the victim. Her eyes welled up with tears. "Why is she here? I thought you said this was our home?" "Did you lie to me? You're still not over her, are you?" Isla pushed Vincent away. "I will never share a roof with another woman!" Vincent hastily grabbed her, pulling her tightly back into his arms. "We're legally married. You're my wife." He looked at me. No explanation. No apology. "Alessia, I had someone pack your things. Move to the safehouse in the suburbs." My mind went blank for a second. Before the anger could even register, a dull, suffocating pain hollowed out my chest. Three years ago, when we moved into this penthouse, Vincent held me with red eyes: "Baby, this is our home. You, me, and our kids." Now, the man who promised me a home was kicking me out of it. My paintings were ripped off the walls. My books were shoved into cardboard boxes. Even our only photo together had been tossed down the garbage chute. As if he couldn't wait to erase every trace of my existence. "My wife is upset. I won't say it twice." Vincent's voice dropped, carrying a blatant warning. A bitter lump blocked my throat. I gave a hoarse nod: "I understand." Vincent stared at my retreating back. He suddenly stepped forward and grabbed me. "There's a Family banquet this afternoon. Come with me." Before I could refuse, he cut me off. "I need to officially introduce Isla to the Capos. You'll help with her dress and keep up appearances." I froze, the absurdity making me want to laugh. He wanted me, his tool, to witness his new wife being officially accepted. But knowing I'd be leaving soon, I didn't argue. Before the banquet, Isla flawlessly picked out the sapphire necklace left by Vincent's mother from my few remaining belongings. "This is nice. It matches my eyes." Vincent had once promised to put that necklace on me at our wedding. Now, he fastened it around her neck himself. At the banquet, Isla clung to Vincent's arm. I stood behind him, enduring the whispers of the Family members: "Looks like Vincent is finally changing his toy." "It's about time. Alessia is just street trash." "A tool is just a tool. Did she really think she could be Donna?" Every word sliced through my heart. I escaped the banquet hall and hid on the terrace. Only to hear voices and laughter behind the glass doors. "Boss, won't Alessia run?" "She's been with me for ten years. She's completely broken in." Vincent's voice was nonchalant. "She's my sharpest knife. Once this alliance is locked down, I'll just pick her right back up. She’s trained well." I walked to the railing, taking desperate, deep breaths. Tears silently slipped down my cheeks. Vincent, you made the wrong bet this time. This discarded old blade will never be drawn for you again. I turned to leave, only to get a glass of red wine thrown straight in my face.

The wine dripped down my cheeks, staining my white dress red. I stared at Isla in disbelief. She wore a sweet smile, but a vicious glint danced in her eyes. "Oops. My hand slipped." She spoke loudly on purpose. Whispers broke out instantly. "Serves her right. She's just a trashy mistress." Once she was sure no one was paying close attention, Isla dropped her mask entirely. "What? Feeling wronged?" She rolled her wrist. "A cheap whore who hides in the shadows deserves to stand here?" "A pathetic little charity case like you... you only belong in the gutter." Her voice was acidic. "Now that the Don has a Donna, an old dog like you should know when to piss off." I was so furious I laughed. But Isla didn't give me a chance to fight back. She suddenly let out a piercing scream, tore the neckline of her own dress, and threw herself hard against the marble pillar. "Ah! Alessia is trying to kill me!" Blood instantly spilled from Isla's forehead as she collapsed. "Alessia!" A dark, icy voice exploded from behind me. Vincent rushed over, scooping Isla up. She cried on command. "Vincent, I know I'll never compare to Alessia. I'm useless." She viciously slapped herself twice across the face. "I shouldn't have delusionally hoped for your love!" Vincent caught her hands, enraged. "Who said that to you?" Isla bit her lip. "How could someone as inexperienced as me be a match for her? Just let me go." "I'm terrified I'll be assassinated in some dark corner of Chicago, not even knowing how I died." Her voice trembled perfectly. Vincent frowned, his glare lethal as it locked onto me. "Explain!" I slowly wiped the wine from my eyes, letting the cold reality sink in. "You should ask your lovely wife what she said." "Don!" Isla shrieked. "I did throw wine at her, but only because she threatened my Family! She said she'll wipe the Vance Family off the map! Please, don't hurt them!" My eyes burned red. "You're lying! It was you—" "Enough." Vincent cut me off coldly. "Alessia, I've spoiled you too much. Do you think because you've done things for me, I can't touch you?" I gave a hollow laugh, my eyes stinging. "So how are you going to back up your wife?" He took a slow step toward me. I felt his fingers brush my neck, and then—click. The crest that marked me as a core member of the Devaro Family was snapped off. The sudden emptiness on my chest made me shudder. It was the mark he had personally fastened around my neck a decade ago. Now, he was ripping it away. Vincent rubbed the crest between his fingers. He turned to his men: "Alessia attacked the Donna. That's treason. Throw her in the hole." Gasps echoed around us. The hole was the Devaro Family's personal hell, meant for breaking traitors. Dark, damp, and freezing. Most people who went in never came out. "Boss..." Marco hesitated. "You've been very bad, Alessia." Vincent's voice was devoid of emotion. "Go in and think about what you've done. Once you get your head straight, I'll put the crest back on you myself." I gave a sarcastic half-smile, pushing his guards away. "I can walk." I'd keep my last shred of dignity for myself. The sudden emptiness seemed to unsettle Vincent. He frowned, struck by an illusion that he would never catch me again. Just as he stepped forward, Isla quickly hooked her arm through his.
