My Alpha took my hospital bag while I was on the verge of giving birth. "Alina might be going into labor. She doesn't have anything ready—yours will have to do." I braced myself against the wall, barely able to speak. "What about me? I think the pup is coming." He slid my phone and the main house access key into his pocket. "You're not even due yet. Stop playing the victim for attention." "Be a good girl and stay home. I'll come back and keep you company later."

I'll come back and keep you company later." … The front door slammed shut. I dragged my heavy body to the entryway and wrenched at the door handle with everything I had. He'd locked it from the outside. There was no opening it from within. A crushing pain tore through my lower abdomen. A rush of warm fluid coursed down my inner thighs and splattered against the hardwood floor. My water had broken. Dennis had taken my phone, so I could only crawl toward the landline in the corner of the living room. My fingers had just grazed the receiver when I noticed the phone cord had been severed at the base. The cut was fresh. The contractions came faster and harder. Cold sweat beaded on my forehead as I slid down the wall to the floor. Survival instinct drove me to use my last shred of strength to crawl toward the balcony. I was on the second floor. Beyond the balcony lay the garden, and there were always patrol guards nearby. I shoved the window open and screamed at the ground below. "Help!" "Is anyone there? Please, contact the infirmary for me!" My voice drew several guards quickly enough, but what they said plunged me into an ice-cold abyss. "Luna, please don't put us in a difficult position." "Alpha gave us specific instructions before he left. He said you've been emotionally unstable during the pregnancy—that you like to scream and shout." "He also said you've been imagining you're about to give birth these past few days. Told us to ignore any commotion we hear, no matter what." I gripped the window frame so hard my nails scraped against the metal with a piercing shriek. "My water actually broke!" "Please, take me to the infirmary—I'm having the baby!" The guard shook his head. "Alpha said anyone who opens the door for you or takes you to the infirmary is interfering with your marriage, and he'll hold them personally responsible." "You should go back inside and rest. If there's anything else, you can let us know." With that, the group resumed their patrol. Watching their retreating figures, I couldn't force a single sound from my throat. Dennis had sealed off every escape route. He'd even cut off the possibility of anyone's kindness reaching me. I stumbled back inside, my vision blurring. The pup inside me seemed to sense the danger and began kicking frantically. My knees buckled and I crashed into the coffee table, sending the fruit bowl flying. Glass shattered across the floor. The wreckage spread before my eyes. I can't die. My palm fumbled across the ground until it closed around a sharp shard of glass. I was going to break down the door. Even if I destroyed my hands in the process, I was getting out. The communication crystal mounted on the living room ceiling suddenly flared red. Dennis's cold voice emanated from within. "Melinda, are you done with your tantrum?" His voice echoed through the empty living room, dripping with condescension. I raised my head and stared at the crystal—the one he'd installed supposedly because he worried about me. Now it had become a tool for him to judge me. I lifted my blood-soaked hand toward the glowing projection. "Dennis, I'm bleeding. I'm really in labor." A contemptuous scoff crackled through the crystal. "Not this again." "Last time you used red ink to fake spotting. What is it this time?" "Alina is in agony right now, and you're at home putting on a show for sympathy." "Melinda, you're truly a disappointment." My body convulsed with pain. Blood had already pooled beneath me. "Dennis, for the pup's sake." "Call the infirmary."

"Melinda, there's no lie you won't tell to get attention, is there?" "I checked your prenatal report before I left. The doctor said everything was normal—you're still half a month from your due date." "You're lying on the floor playing dead because you want to trick me into leaving Alina's side, don't you?" I gasped for air. "I'm not lying to you." "Dennis, my water already broke—the pup will suffocate!" "We share a fated bond. Can't you feel my pain?" Dennis went silent for two seconds, as if trying to sense something. Then Alina's faint, pained moan came through, and the connection that had barely formed shattered instantly. "Alina, is it hurting again? The doctor's on his way." After comforting Alina, his voice turned bone-cold when he addressed me again. "Melinda, Alina is an orphan. I'm all she has." "You have a good family, money, free time—why do you need to compete with a helpless girl?" "She just borrowed your hospital bag, and you resort to these despicable tactics to force me back." "You're vile." My cheek pressed against the freezing floor. Tears and cold sweat splashed onto the back of my hand. I tore my gaze from the communication crystal and clenched my jaw, dragging myself toward the door. Glass shards dug into my palms. I couldn't feel the pain. There was only one thought left in my mind: get out. I crawled to the entryway and slammed the glass shard against the door lock with all my strength. The glass shattered instantly, slicing deep gashes across my hand. The lock didn't budge. Dennis's voice came again, laced with barely contained fury. "Melinda! What are you doing!" "If you damage that door, I'll make you pay when I get back!" I rummaged through the shoe cabinet with blood-slicked hands. I remembered a spare key being kept here. If I could find that key, I could survive. I swept everything out of the cabinet onto the floor. Finally, at the very bottom compartment, my fingers closed around the cold metal key. Bracing against the wall, I stood on trembling legs and guided the key toward the lock. It wouldn't go in. I leaned close to look. The keyhole was packed solid with dried glue. I stared blankly at the sealed lock. "Don't waste your energy." Dennis's voice carried a note of satisfaction. "I know how stubborn you are. I was afraid you'd sneak out and cause trouble for Alina." "I sealed the keyhole with glue before I left." "Melinda, just be a good girl and apologize. Promise me you won't bother Alina." "Once she's finished giving birth, I'll come straight home to be with you." My back slid down the door, my body sinking inch by inch. He'd sealed off my last way out. He wasn't afraid I'd cause trouble for Alina. He wanted to strip me of every right to survive. I tilted my head up and looked at the still-glowing communication crystal. "Dennis, I'm going to sever our bond." Silence from the other end. Then his voice exploded with rage. "Melinda, you're threatening me again!" "Do you think a mate bond can just be dissolved whenever you feel like it?" "Is threatening me with this the only thing you know how to do?" I closed my eyes and stopped responding. The contractions had nearly robbed me of speech. I could feel something bearing down. "Dennis, I don't want you anymore." With those words, I hurled the metal key at the communication crystal with every ounce of strength I had left. The crystal shattered. The light went dark. The living room returned to deathly silence. Lying in a pool of blood, I gulped air in ragged breaths.

He contacted the guards and had the home's energy supply cut from the outside. The living room lights went out instantly. Every piece of functioning equipment in the house shut down simultaneously. The entire place plunged into darkness. From the shattered crystal, his frigid warning emerged. "Melinda, since you refuse to appreciate my kindness, you can reflect in the dark." "When you're ready to apologize, that's when I'll turn the lights back on." "Don't expect me to feel sorry for you. You brought this on yourself." My body curled on the floor. I bit down on my lip, refusing to let myself cry out. I could feel the blood draining from my body with terrible clarity. Each wave of pain in my abdomen hit harder than the last. Reason told me I had to stay conscious. He could no longer see what I was doing. My hands groped across the floor as I crawled toward the bathroom. There were scissors and towels in there. If no one came to save me, I would have to deliver this baby myself. I'd barely reached the bathroom doorway when a light suddenly bloomed in the distance. At some point, a communication crystal had been installed in the living room clock as well. The glow from its projection illuminated my ashen face. On the screen, Alina lay in a hospital bed, her complexion rosy and healthy. She was nestled in Dennis's arms, holding my hospital bag. "Dennis, is Melinda upset with me?" Alina's voice was saccharine, laced with manufactured hurt. "I didn't mean to take her bag. My contractions just started so suddenly." "Maybe you should go back and check on her. I can manage on my own." Dennis tenderly wiped the tears from the corner of her eye. "Forget about her. She just can't stand seeing me be good to you." "She smashed the surveillance crystal at home. She's probably throwing a fit somewhere right now." He turned toward the camera, his gaze turning sharp. "Melinda, look at how considerate Alina is." "Now look at yourself—smashing things, threatening to break our bond, acting like a lunatic." "I'm warning you. If you make another scene and upset Alina—" "I'll pull the plug on your brother's treatment tomorrow." My heart plummeted to the pit of my stomach. My brother was my only family left in this world, and he was still receiving treatment at the pack's infirmary. All of Dennis's devotion, all his tenderness—it was reserved for Alina, the woman who called me "sister" to my face. Looking at that loving couple on the screen, a wave of violent nausea washed over me. "Dennis, you make me sick." I screamed those words with everything I had. On screen, Alina shrank into Dennis's embrace in fright. "Dennis, Melinda is so scary. My stomach hurts so badly." Dennis's face went dark as iron. "Melinda, you're asking for death!" "Since you love acting insane so much, then rot in there and die!" He cut the video feed. Immediately after, I heard a hollow sound echo through the water pipes. He hadn't just cut the power—he'd had someone shut off the main water valve too. I crawled to the sink and twisted the faucet. A few residual drops fell, then nothing. No water. No electricity. No communication. He had driven me to a dead end. My back against the cold tile, I gasped for breath. The blood beneath me had completely soaked through my dress. The thick smell of iron permeated the cramped bathroom. The pup inside me grew quieter and quieter. The movements had gone from violent to faint, barely a flutter. "Don't be scared, baby." My hand pressed against my belly, and my tears finally broke free. "Mama will save you, even if it kills me." Clenching my jaw, I fumbled through the cabinet beneath the sink. My fingers found a rusted pair of scissors. I gripped them tight. This was my last tool for self-rescue.
