第1章

Ten years ago, Lorenzo Moretti saved my life. Tonight, he's ordering me to smile while his mistress uses me for target practice. I was eighteen when he found us. Some sick bastard had my baby sister and me locked in a cage at a black-market auction, ready to sell us to the highest bidder. Lorenzo shot the place up single-handed. Walked through the blood and the bodies, popped the lock, and pulled us out. He crouched down in front of me. Wiped a thumb across my split lip. "You belong to the Morettis now, sweetheart. I'll teach you how to survive." And he did. He trained me himself. Guns. Knives. How to break a man twice my size. Ten years later I was Underboss of the Moretti Family. His right hand. The girl he built from scratch. The day I got my star, I walked into the estate covered in blood, grinning like a lunatic. That's the day he came home with her. "Luna. Jesus. Look at you." His eyes went over me like I was garbage on his marble. "Go clean up. You're scaring my little rabbit." That night, the men stopped calling me Boss. They started calling her Mrs. Moretti. Lorenzo took the gun off my hip. Tied an apron around my waist himself. Underboss to babysitter, just like that. She won't eat? I kneel by her chair and spoon-feed her. She scratches her wrist on a nail? He carves ten of the same into me. For failing her. I don't cry. I don't scream. I take it. Because ten years ago, he told me: "Wanna pay me back, Luna?" "Do a hundred things for me." I open the leather notebook I keep hidden under my mattress. Ninety-seven done. Three left. Three, and I'm done with him forever. I'm carrying Sienna's dinner tray down the hall when he stops me. "Luna. Grab your sister's cross. Sienna wants it." That cross was our mother's. It's the only thing Nina has left of her. She sleeps with it under her pillow every single night. My eyes go wet. His jaw locks. "Luna Moretti." He only pulls out my full name when he wants somebody to bleed. Two days ago I wouldn't hand Sienna my sunglasses at the stables. He tied me to the back of her horse and let her drag me around the paddock till the sun went down. I turn around. I walk to Nina's room. I lift the chain off her sleeping neck with my own hands. I clasp it around Sienna's throat myself. "Looks good on you." Lorenzo smirks. Pulls her into his side. "See, baby? Hundreds of soldiers on my payroll. She's the best-trained dog I got." He looks at me over her hair. "Keep her happy, Luna. Maybe we'll still talk about that wedding." Sienna rips the cross off and slams it on the marble. It shatters. "Enzo! You swore you'd only marry me!" Big fat tears. The whole performance. And he crumbles. He always crumbles. He shoves past me, scoops her up, and carries her back to their bedroom whispering baby, baby, baby like a damn prayer. I drop to my knees. Pick up the pieces. My hands are shaking so bad the silver slices me open. Blood on the marble. The guards in the hall are laughing. Whatever. So am I. Last month I flatlined twice on a table taking a job for him. He walked into the ICU, looked at all the tubes running out of me, and said: "You're slipping, Luna. A handful of amateurs did this to you?" "Doesn't matter. Sienna needs a nanny anyway." I squeeze the broken cross tighter. My eyes burn worse than my palm. That night Nina finds the pieces in my pocket and cries herself sick. I hold her. Rock her. Whisper into her hair. "Nina. Just a little longer. I swear on Mom. We're getting out." The door blows open. Lorenzo. Face like a storm. "Why is she crying? She woke Sienna up." "Take your sister. Border safehouse. Now." I don't even get to open my mouth. His men are already hauling us to the SUV. Nina twists in their grip and screams at him. "Enzo, you didn't used to be like this!" He freezes. The whole hallway freezes. I clap my hand over her mouth. My tears run down her cheek. I don't talk much anymore. Not since Sienna moved in. I told him once to come home to the compound more. He stripped my rank in front of the whole crew that same night. I told Sienna to quit playing at the shooting range. He put a gun to my forehead and told me I forgot my place. He caught a bullet on a run. I brought him soup. He threw the bowl at the wall. "Don't act like you care. Sienna'll get the wrong idea." But he was the one who said he loved me first. He was the one who said he'd marry me. I let my hand off Nina's mouth. She's still crying, quiet now. The border safehouse is a death sentence. Cruz territory runs two blocks over. Nobody sleeps out there and wakes up. Halfway through the drive, I make my call. I jump out of the SUV and run back on foot. The second I pound on Sienna's door, the moaning inside stops cold. A crystal glass explodes against my forehead. I bite the inside of my cheek till it bleeds. I bow. "Miss Vale. I'm apologizing for my sister. She won't bother you again. I swear." Blood runs down my face in three thin lines. Lorenzo's chest is moving too fast. "Cut the wounded puppy act, Luna. People are gonna think Sienna hurt you on purpose." I don't even look at him. I drop to my knees. Press my forehead to the marble. Once. Twice. Three times. Only then does she wave a lazy hand. "Enzo, baby, I'm tired. Just let her off." He kisses her forehead. Shakes his head. "You're too sweet, princess. People are gonna eat you alive." Then he looks at me. Dead flat. "You care so much about your sister? Walk her to the safehouse. No driver. No escort." That night, Nina spikes a hundred and four. I carry her on my back through a blizzard for six hours straight. Outside the ER, I flip the notebook open. Two left.

The border safehouse is nowhere near the compound. Before the sun even comes up, I'm supposed to be back at the estate making Sienna's breakfast. I don't make it to the kitchen. The second I step through the door, Lorenzo's men jump me. They zip-tie my wrists, shove a bag over my head, throw me in the back of an SUV like a body. The blindfold and gag come off rough. My knees hit dirt. I look up. Lorenzo is standing over me. Sienna is at his side, bouncing on her toes. He points across the field. Paper targets. Fifty yards out. "Go stand over there. Sienna wants to practice." My head snaps up. "She's never held a gun in her life. She'll kill me." Sienna's face falls on cue. She tugs his sleeve, pouting. "Enzo, baby, she's right. I'm so useless. Maybe we shouldn't." "Bullshit." He yanks her into his side and presses the gun into her palm himself. "You're a natural, princess. You're gonna be a hell of a shot." Then he looks at me. Cold. "Move. Since when do you say no to me?" I stare at the pistol in her hand. The bullet holes still healing under my dress start to burn. Every single one. I don't move. He grabs my jaw so hard my teeth click. "You wanna sit this one out? Fine. I'll pull Nina out of her bed. She owes me a life too." Lorenzo doesn't bluff. Ever. One more word out of me and my ten-year-old sister takes the bullets instead. I close my eyes. I curl my lip into something like a smile. "She's just a kid. I'll go." "Bigger target anyway. More fun for Miss Vale." He lets go. Satisfied. He turns to load Sienna's revolver himself. "Enzo, what if I miss? I mean, she is your—" He slides in six rounds. Spins the cylinder. "She won't die, baby. She's taken a couple hundred bullets for me over the years. This is just a mosquito bite." The gun goes off. The round tears through my knee. I hit the ground. Hard. Through the fog I see Sienna spinning in a circle, squealing. The man who used to see me bleed and lose his mind now says two words. "Keep going." Second shot. Through my left shoulder. I slam back onto the concrete. The soldiers around us shift on their feet. Nobody knows what to do. Lorenzo just nods. Two of his guys grab me under the arms and hold me up like a marionette. Third round through my left side. Fourth through my right arm. I choke up blood. My white dress goes red. Sienna cocks the hammer for round five. Lorenzo catches her wrist. "Enough. Take her to the medic." Sienna stomps her foot. Actually stomps it. "Enzo! I was just getting good! Why are you ending it so soon?" And just like that, he softens. He hesitates. He turns to his men. "Bring me Nina." "No—" The word rips out of me before I can stop it. "No. Please. She's ten. She's still sick—" Lorenzo's head turns. Slow. He looks at me for one long second. Then he goes back to tapping Sienna's nose. The last thing I see before the black takes me is my baby sister. Tied to that target. Screaming. Screaming for me. "Luna! Luna, help me!" "Please—somebody—help me—"

I wake up in a hospital bed. "Nina—where's Nina!" I shoot upright. My arm swings out and knocks the soup bowl clean out of Lorenzo's hand. His face darkens. But he doesn't snap. He just grabs a napkin and starts dabbing the broth off my chest. I catch his wrist. Hard. "Where is she. Tell me." He won't meet my eyes. My stitches tear open. Pain shoots through me. I don't care. I swing my legs off the mattress and stagger toward the door. He yanks me back against him. His voice is tight, holding something down. "She's in surgery. You'll just get in the way." "When she's stable, I'll bring you to her. Right now, you rest." For the next few days, he pays for the best doctors in the state. He even sits by my bed himself sometimes. He shows me a photo of Nina hooked up to machines. Then he tries to spoon soup into my mouth. I keep my lips shut. He doesn't get angry. He takes a sip himself, leans down, and forces it past my lips with his own. I wipe my mouth like it makes me sick. I rip the bowl out of his hand. He blinks. But he doesn't say anything. He's being patient with me. Weirdly, unnervingly patient. Until Sienna comes to visit. Lorenzo bursts through the door and finds her sprawled on the floor. Cheek red. Palm sliced open on broken glass. He starts shaking. When his eyes land on me, there is nothing soft left in them. "Luna. Have you lost your goddamn mind?" He pulls Sienna into his chest. His eyes go red. For her. Never for me. "Apologize. Right now." Old me would already be on the floor. But Nina is somewhere in this building, and I don't even know if she's breathing. I can't bow to this bitch. Not today. I don't move. Lorenzo's face turns to stone. "Have I been spoiling you? Is that it? You think you get to tell me no now?" I ignore him. I turn my back and walk toward the bed. His voice hits me from behind. "Take one more step. I'll pull the plug on Nina myself." My feet freeze. Under the hospital gown, my nails dig so hard into my palms they draw blood. All that warmth the last few days. And I actually let myself believe he felt guilty about her. God. I was so stupid. The Lorenzo who raised Nina like his own daughter died the day Sienna walked through the front gate. I turn around. I bow. All the way down, ninety degrees. "On your knees." My legs give. I hit the floor. Press my forehead to the tile. When I lift my head, Lorenzo has Sienna's face in both hands. He's kissing her. Deep. Open-mouthed. I keep going. Forehead to floor. Again. Again. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." My voice cracks. My throat goes raw. They finally break apart. Slow. Reluctant. Lorenzo scoffs. Scoops Sienna into his arms and rushes her off to the ER. I stay on the floor. I don't cry until his back disappears at the end of the hallway. Then it all comes out. Silent. Ugly. I press a hand to my chest. It's on fire. I drag myself to the cabinet and dig the leather notebook out from under a stack of gauze. Two words. My hand won't stop shaking. Human target. "What are you doing?" His voice. Right behind me.

I shove the notebook back under the pillow. Too late. He already saw it. Lorenzo scoffs. His voice drips. "Still writing that self-pitying crap?" He walks right past me. Picks Sienna's bracelet up off the floor. Heads for the door. "Oh. Tomorrow. You're going wedding dress shopping with Sienna. You've got experience. Help her pick something out." I almost laugh out loud. A few months ago I said I wanted to try dresses on. He came up with a dozen reasons to shut it down. I don't say a word. I just nod. The bridal boutique is buzzing. Champagne. Soft music. Everyone smiling. Except me. The girls at the counter keep their heads down and whisper. "Who does she think she's mourning? Looks like she came here to shop for a casket." "Don't you know? She's Don Moretti's side piece. You'd look like that too if you had to help the real fiancée try on gowns." "Side piece? Her? Look at how washed-out she is. No way the Don's actually into that." I keep my eyes on the racks. Slide the hangers along, one by one. Been a few months. The styles haven't changed much. Sienna tries on gown after gown. Lorenzo never takes his eyes off her. Every word in the English language, he uses them all on her. But she's still not happy. She throws the dress on the floor and looks up at me. "Sis. You do it. I'm tired." Before Lorenzo can say anything, I take the gown and walk into the fitting room. He freezes. I slip the dress on. I pull the curtain back. The look on his face goes from anticipation to disgust in a single second. Bruises everywhere on my skin. Three raw bullet holes on my left shoulder still leaking through the lace. A jagged knife scar running down my right side. The whole store sucks in a breath. Sienna stumbles back. She slaps a hand over her mouth and shrieks. "Enzo! Oh my God—what is that? Get it away from me!" "She looks like a corpse someone dug up!" Lorenzo's face goes black. He rounds on me. "Put it back on. Cover yourself up. Now." "Standing there like a butchered dog on my fiancée's big day. Have some shame." Every eye in the store crawls over me. I peel the dress off. The satin drags across the open wound. I flinch. Every single bullet I ever took for him. Seven years later. Firing into me again. Sienna still can't pick. Lorenzo waves a hand and buys the whole store out. I grab a pink sundress off a rack. A homecoming present for Nina. For when she gets out of the hospital. She's going to be so scared. Someone snickers behind me. Sienna rips the dress out of my hands. Her lip curls. "What's this for? Planning to burn it at her grave?"
