第1章
My family finally brings me home after seventeen years, only because their precious false heiress refuses to marry a disgraced prince.
At my first royal banquet, her friends mock my upbringing, question my virtue, and tear the locket my mentor left me.
I’m still smiling when the Third Prince sees my face across the hall and goes deathly pale.
After all, the last time we met, I poisoned him.
-
The broken chain slips from my neck.
My locket hits the floor and springs open.
The dried herb inside falls out, and Cecilia crushes it beneath her shoe.
My smile slowly fades.
I was raised at Valemont Sanctuary for ten years.
I learned enough Healing Arts to save lives, but Poison Alchemy was where my real talent lay.
Noble or commoner, anyone who took one of my deadliest poisons had less than three days to live.
Even my mentor couldn’t cure the worst of them.
The day I left Valemont Sanctuary, my mentor gave me this locket.
Inside was a single dried healing herb.
He told me to look at it whenever I lost my temper, to remember that I had learned to heal people, not poison them whenever they made me angry.
I remembered.
For seven years, I traveled across the kingdom, saving lives and becoming known as a gentle healer.
People gradually forgot the wicked child from Valemont Sanctuary.
They only remembered Elara Vane, the healer who saved lives.
Then House Ashford found me and told me I was their biological daughter, switched with another child seventeen years ago.
The night I returned to the capital, they brought me to this royal banquet.
Several young ladies gather around Vivienne, whispering about me.
“I heard she grew up far from noble society. Who knows what kind of men she’s been with?”
“She’s only here to take Vivienne’s place. If Vivienne wanted to marry that crippled prince, why would the Ashfords bother bringing her back?”
I keep smiling.
Then Cecilia walks up to me.
“A woman with no manners has no business marrying into the royal family.”
She shoves me.
I move aside, but her hand catches the chain around my neck.
The locket breaks.
And now the herb lies crushed beneath her shoe.
Cecilia still doesn’t realize anything is wrong.
“Why did you dodge? I barely touched you.”
The other young ladies immediately join her.
“She really has no manners.”
“Cecilia was only trying to teach her proper etiquette.”
“She actually thinks being brought back makes her a proper heiress.”
I bend down and pick up my locket without answering.
Vivienne finally steps forward and lightly touches Cecilia’s arm. Her eyes are already red.
“Cecilia, please. My sister only just came home. Of course she doesn’t understand our customs yet.”
Only just came home.
Those words draw a clear line between us.
I look at her.
She looks back.
I see caution, hurt, and resentment buried deep in her eyes.
Of course she resents me.
For seventeen years, she has lived as the daughter of House Ashford and enjoyed everything that should have been mine.
Now I’m back, and even the marriage meant for her has fallen to me. Not that anyone considers a disgraced prince with crippled legs a good match. That is exactly why the Ashfords brought me home, and both Vivienne and I know it.
She is afraid I’ll take everything from her.
But I don’t care.
Not about the title, the marriage, or House Ashford.
But they should never have touched my locket.
My mentor gave it to me.
I was never a good child.
When I was ten, another apprentice stole my candy, so I slipped something into his tea and kept him running to the bathroom for three days.
At eleven, a boy gathering herbs called me a little monster behind my back. I lured him close to a snake den and listened to him cry all night.
At twelve, I made my first poison by myself and was too excited to sleep.
The same ingredients that save lives can cause unbearable pain if you change the order or the amount.
I always found that fascinating.
My mentor often told me I was wicked by nature.
“You were born wicked, Elara.”
Still, he never sent me away.
He said letting me loose on the world too young would only hurt people.
So he kept me close for ten years.
Then I left him and spent seven years pretending to be a gentle healer.
I’ve been pretending for so long that these young ladies truly think I’m someone they can bully.
My silence only makes Cecilia bolder.
“What? You’re too scared to answer? Who knows what kind of people you spent all those years with, or how many men you’ve been with—”
Vivienne gives a small frown.
“Cecilia.”
She sounds like she’s stopping her.
But I catch the faint smile at the corner of her mouth.
I close my fingers around the broken locket and slowly stand.
“Are you finished?”
Cecilia blinks.
“What?”
I look at her and ask again, softly.
“Are you finished?”
Her smile stiffens.
At the same moment, something shatters across the hall.
Prince Adrian has dropped his wineglass.
He stares at my face, deathly pale.
I meet his eyes and smile.
Across the hall, the Third Prince instinctively takes a step back.

But a second later, Cecilia straightens her back.
“What? Am I wrong? You grew up far from here. Who knows what kind of people you spent those years with? Now House Ashford brings you back, and you think you can take Vivienne’s place? Who do you think you are?”
Vivienne lowers her head and says nothing.
That is what she does best.
She never gets her own hands dirty. She simply stands aside and lets other people say the cruel things for her.
I look at her and smile.
She raises her head. The moment our eyes meet, her face pales slightly.
“Vivienne, do you think so too?” I ask gently.
The people around us fall silent.
Everyone looks at her.
Vivienne bites her lip, her eyes turning red at exactly the right moment.
“Elara, why are you forcing me like this? I’ve never tried to compete with you.”
“Really?”
I close my fingers around the broken locket in my palm.
“Because you look afraid of me.”
Vivienne’s eyes widen slightly.
The clink of glass comes from across the hall, drawing everyone’s attention.
Prince Adrian stands there, his face deathly pale.
He is staring straight at me.
Someone beside him asks quietly, “Your Highness, are you all right?”
Adrian doesn’t answer.
I smile at him.
He takes another half step back.
The room goes completely silent.
Vivienne sees it too.
Clearly, she never expected a woman House Ashford had only just brought home to frighten a prince like this.
Cecilia still doesn’t understand.
She frowns at Adrian.
“Your Highness, do you know her?”
Adrian says nothing.
His gaze drops to the broken locket in my hand, and his face grows even paler.
I find it amusing, so I give him a small nod.
“Your Highness.”
Two words.
Adrian’s hand jerks, and his wineglass slips from his fingers, shattering across the floor.
Now no one can pretend they haven’t noticed.
Cecilia finally senses something is wrong, but she still tries to save face.
“She’s just some woman who grew up outside the capital. Why would Your Highness—”
“Shut up!”
Adrian cuts her off sharply.
Cecilia freezes.
Adrian doesn’t even look at her.
His eyes remain fixed on me, sweat already forming on his forehead.
Of course he’s afraid of me.
Seven years ago, I was still a young traveling healer.
Adrian had been drinking when he stopped me on the road and tried to take me away with him.
He probably thought I was just an ordinary healer who couldn’t refuse a prince.
He smiled and asked if I wanted to go with him.
I smiled too.
Then I slipped something into his wine.
The poison wasn’t deadly.
It only made his entire body itch, all the way down to his bones, no matter how much he scratched.
The royal healers couldn’t help him.
Only after someone from Valemont Sanctuary recognized the poison did Adrian finally understand who he had offended.
Seven years later, he clearly remembers.
But he doesn’t dare reveal my identity here.
Because the moment he does, tonight stops being a petty fight between a few noble ladies and the biological daughter House Ashford just brought home.
I don’t rush him.
I simply watch.
The sweat on Adrian’s forehead becomes more obvious.
Finally, he speaks.
“They didn’t know who they were dealing with. They offended you.”
His voice is low.
“Please don’t hold it against them.”
A prince is apologizing to me in front of the entire court on behalf of several noble ladies.
The hall falls silent.
The color slowly drains from Cecilia’s face.
At last, she is afraid.
第3章
Vivienne goes completely still.
She stares at me as if she’s seeing me for the first time.
I smile gently. “Your Highness, there’s no need to apologize. It was only a few jokes. Why would I take them personally?”
Instead of relaxing, Adrian turns even paler.
He knows me too well.
Before poisoning someone, I always liked to smile and tell them I didn’t mind.
Vivienne finally steps forward and moves in front of Cecilia.
“Elara, what exactly are you trying to do?”
I look down at her.
There is none of the false affection from before in her voice now.
“Are you afraid?” I ask.
Vivienne’s expression hardens. “Why would I be afraid of you?”
“Because you’re guilty,” I say calmly. “You’ve had my identity for seventeen years and enjoyed everything that should have been mine. Now that I’m back, you’re afraid I’ll take it all from you.”
Vivienne’s eyes immediately turn red.
“I am not!”
She sounds as if I’ve deeply wronged her.
Several people around us immediately look at her with sympathy.
She has always been good at this.
I only smile. “You know the truth better than anyone.”
The tension around us grows heavier.
At that moment, an announcement comes from the entrance.
“The Crown Prince!”
Everyone quickly composes themselves and bows.
The Crown Prince enters the hall and immediately notices something is wrong.
He looks at the shattered wineglass on the floor, then at everyone standing around us with tense faces.
“What happened?”
No one answers.
Vivienne bites her lip and starts to step forward, but Adrian speaks first.
“Nothing. A few ladies were careless with their words, and there was a small argument.”
He answers quickly, as if he’s afraid something worse will happen if he waits any longer.
The Crown Prince gives him a doubtful look.
His gaze moves across the group before settling on me.
The moment he sees my face, he pauses as if I look familiar.
I lower my eyes and say nothing.
The hall grows quieter.
Everyone is waiting to see what happens next.
Before anyone can speak again, another announcement rings through the hall.
“His Majesty the King. Her Majesty the Queen.”
The King and Queen enter.
Everyone bows.
I do the same.
Even with my eyes lowered, I can still feel several people watching me.
Vivienne looks at me with hatred.
Adrian looks at me with fear.
And the King is watching me too.
Once seated, the King looks over the room.
“Why was it so noisy in here?”
No one dares to answer first.
The Queen finally speaks in a gentle voice.
“I thought I heard an argument from outside. Did someone forget their manners?”
Her tone is soft, but everyone understands that she is giving them a chance to explain.
Vivienne takes it immediately.
Her eyes redden as she says, “Your Majesties, there was only a misunderstanding between my sister and a few of my friends. I’m sorry we disturbed you.”
With one sentence, she admits there was a conflict while reducing it to nothing more than a misunderstanding.
The King follows her gaze to me.
“So this is the eldest daughter House Ashford just brought home?”
