My boyfriend played guitar. My best friend sang lead. I carried their equipment and took their pictures. When she shoved me backstage, he defended her—so I dumped him. Neither knew I was G, the anonymous singer whose music he played in his car. With our band losing, I stepped up to the keyboard, revealed my identity, and led us to victory. Now he wants another chance, and she's posting cropped messages to paint me as a cheater. I have the full conversations—and I'm done staying quiet to protect either of them.

第1章

Everyone on campus knows my boyfriend plays guitar and my best friend sings lead. Most of them don't even know I'm in the band. I'm usually the one taking the pictures. "Higher, Grace," Brooke says. "You're cutting off Connor's hair." I lift her phone. She steps closer to him beneath the WESTBRIDGE UNIVERSITY banner. His arm settles around her shoulders before she asks. We're all wearing the same black band T-shirt. Mine just comes in a bigger size. "Perfect," she says after checking the picture. "One more on yours? Your camera's better." Behind us, someone tests a microphone. Across the auditorium, Creston's band is setting up. Connor glances at the stage. "Quick. We need to talk about the arrangement." I take the picture. They walk away before I can ask anyone to take one with me. I'm still putting my phone in my pocket when Brooke calls back. "Coming?" I follow them down the aisle. Connor is explaining where he wants to add another guitar solo. Brooke wants to hold the last note of her chorus longer. "You'll be playing over her last note," I say. Connor looks back. "What?" "If she holds that note, you need to wait before you start the solo." He smiles a little. "It's supposed to overlap, Grace." "Not the way you played it at rehearsal." Brooke touches his arm. "We'll work it out. She's just nervous." Then she turns to me. "You're lucky, you know. Most people would kill to sit in on these conversations." Connor laughs. "She tunes out halfway through." I don't answer. At rehearsal, I'm usually at the spare keyboard or a backing microphone. When they stop to argue, I keep my hands in my lap and wait. I've learned that offering an opinion takes longer than being quiet. That doesn't mean I don't hear what's wrong. By the end of the first half, everyone else can hear it, too. Three events. Three points to Creston. None to us. The scoreboard hangs above the stage, bright enough to see from the back row. WESTBRIDGE: 0 CRESTON: 3 There are still four points available after the break: one for the solo showcase and three for the final full-band set. We need every one of them. Across the stage, Dylan Shaw pushes his hair out of his eyes and leans toward the host's microphone. "I thought this was supposed to be a rivalry." A few people laugh. He looks over at Connor. "Maybe next year." Connor's jaw tightens. Brooke stares at the floor. I start to stand. Then I stop. For a second, I'm back in Grandpa's living room, sitting beside him at the piano. I'm fourteen. My first video has been online for less than a day. I want to play him the song. Instead, I show him the comments. The first few are about my voice. Then someone asks if the camera adds fifty pounds. Other people join in. Grandpa reads enough to understand. Then he sets my phone facedown. "You don't have to answer everybody who tries to hurt you." "What if they're right?" He looks at me. "About the song?" I shake my head. He opens the piano lid. "Then let's listen to the song." I reach for my headphones. The piano piece he used to play comes through softly, familiar enough that I know where every note will land. My shoulders drop. A stagehand waves us toward the greenroom. I lower my headphones around my neck. Inside, Brooke sits on the couch with her face in her hands. Connor stands beside her, rubbing her back. I take a bottle of water from the cooler, loosen the cap, and hold it out. "Here." She knocks it out of my hand. Water spills across the floor. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" I stare at her. "What?" "You've been sitting there all day with that look on your face." "What look?" "Like you know better than everyone." Connor bends to pick up the bottle. "Brooke, take a breath." But he's looking at me. I step back from the water. "I'm not the reason we're losing." Her head snaps up. "Nobody said you were." "You just accused me of enjoying it." "Grace," Connor says. "She's upset." "I noticed." "Then maybe don't make it worse." Something small and sharp catches beneath my ribs. Maya, our drummer, reaches for a handful of paper towels. "I've got it," she says quietly. Brooke watches me over Connor's shoulder. "You have no idea what it's like out there." "I know you couldn't hear the count-in because you were talking over it." Her face changes. "And Connor started his solo before you finished the phrase. Exactly like rehearsal." Our bassist, Evan, lets out a short laugh. "Great. Notes from the snack department." I turn toward him. "You asked me to pick up your lunch." "It was a joke." "You all ask me to bring food, find cables, print set lists. But the second I have an opinion, I don't belong here?" Connor straightens. "Enough." "No. You don't get to call me part of the band only when you need something." Brooke stands. "Oh, please. You barely play in front of people." "That doesn't mean I can't hear." "You think you could do better against Dylan?" I look through the open door. Across the hall, Dylan is laughing with his band. I've heard that laugh before. "Yes." Brooke folds her arms. "And when have you ever beaten him?" "I've beaten him before." The room goes quiet. Then Evan laughs again. This time, everyone hears him.

Brooke looks at Connor. "Did you know we had a secret rock star?" He doesn't laugh, but he doesn't tell her to stop. "I'm not joking," I say. "That's what makes it sad." Maya drops the wet paper towels into the trash. "Brooke." "No, seriously." Brooke points toward the stage. "We're getting humiliated out there, and she's making up stories." "I answered your question." "You know what? Leave." I look at her. "This is our greenroom. Go sit in the audience if all you want to do is criticize." "I'm on the roster." "As an alternate." "Still on it." She moves closer. I have enough time to see her hands lift. Not enough to step away. She shoves my shoulders. I stumble backward, catching myself against the doorframe. The metal latch digs into my lower back. "Brooke!" Maya says. Connor moves between us. For one stupid second, I think he's coming to check on me. Instead, he faces me. "Don't." I take my hand away from my back. "Don't what?" "Make this physical." I stare at him. "She pushed me." "I saw." "And you're warning me?" "She has to go back onstage. Can we please not do this right now?" Behind him, Brooke folds her arms across her chest. I wait for him to turn around. To tell her she shouldn't have touched me. To ask if I'm okay. He doesn't. I'm suddenly very calm. "We're done." Connor blinks. "What?" "I'm breaking up with you." Somewhere outside the room, a guitar starts playing scales. He lowers his voice. "Because I'm trying to keep everyone calm?" "No." "Then because I defended Brooke?" "You always defend Brooke." "She's my friend." "She's supposed to be mine, too." Brooke makes a disgusted sound. "God, Grace. This is not the time to be jealous." I keep looking at Connor. "You remembered her audition before she did. You missed my birthday dinner because rehearsal ran late." "You told me it was fine." "I told you I didn't want to argue over the phone on my birthday." "That was months ago." "Yes." "And now you're bringing it up?" "My parents came to visit, and you couldn't spare an hour. Hers came for a weekend, and you booked dinner." Brooke steps beside him. "That is completely different." "Then let him explain." Connor opens his mouth. Nothing comes out. I look down at the thin silver bracelet on my wrist. He gave it to me last Christmas. I spent half the evening worrying that it was too tight. He spent the other half answering Brooke's texts. I work the clasp loose. Connor notices. "Grace." I place it on the table beside his guitar case. Brooke's voice softens in the way I hate most. "You're making a huge mistake. Connor's never cared about appearances. Do you know how hard that is to find?" My fingers go still on the table. "Whose appearance?" "Oh, come on." "Say it." "You know what I mean." "Yes," I say. "I do." Connor rubs his forehead. "Can we stop putting words in each other's mouths?" "She didn't need my help." "Grace, please." He sounds tired of me. That used to make me apologize. A stagehand appears in the doorway. "Five minutes. I need the soloists ready." Brooke turns immediately. "I'm coming." Connor picks up the bracelet. "We'll talk after the competition." "There's nothing to talk about." "Just give me a few hours." He reaches toward my wrist. I move it out of his way. Brooke catches his sleeve. "Let her go. We need to focus." His hand drops. He looks at me once more. "Afterward." "No," I say. "You don't have to agree for it to be over." He stands there until Brooke pulls him into the hallway. Evan follows them. Maya stays. "Are you hurt?" "A little." "Do you want to leave?" I look at the roster taped beside the door. My name is there. Grace Miller. Keys. Vocals. Alternate. "I'm staying." She nods. "Okay." We walk back toward the stage together.

Dylan goes first in the solo showcase. One guitar. One microphone. He knows exactly how to work the room. He lets the audience settle before his first line. When he changes the rhythm in the second verse, it feels deliberate. When he holds a note, he gives it somewhere to go. He's good. That has never been the problem. He finishes to loud applause and steps away from the microphone with a little bow. During the changeover, Brooke steps up to her microphone for a quick sound check. She asks for more of her voice in the monitor. The sound engineer adjusts it. She sings a line, stops, and asks him to turn it up again. Then she comes back into the wings, where Connor is waiting with his guitar. Although it's the solo showcase, each featured singer is allowed one accompanist. Brooke always chooses him. "Try the chorus," he says. She does. The high note comes out tight. "Again." "Stop telling me to do it again." "I'm trying to help." From where I'm standing, I can hear him speeding up. Maya taps the original tempo against her thigh, then looks at me. Neither of us says anything. The host comes backstage while the stage crew resets. He's followed by a student with a camera. "Quick check-in for the stream," he says. "How's everyone feeling?" Connor immediately straightens. "Ready." "Any changes after the first half?" "We've had some distractions," he says. "But we're working through them." Brooke gives a strained laugh. "That's one way to put it." The host glances between them. "What kind of distractions?" "Personal stuff," Connor says. He looks straight at me. The camera follows his gaze. My stomach drops. Brooke notices. "His girlfriend decided this was the perfect time to dump him." "Brooke," Maya says. "What? It happened." The host lowers his microphone slightly. "We don't need to get into—" "She's been picking at us all day," Brooke continues. "Then she starts a fight during the break. Obviously that affects people." Connor says nothing. I look at him. "Is that what happened?" "Grace." "Did I make you lose the first three events?" His eyes flick toward the camera. "No one said that." "She just did." "I'm trying to focus." "Then tell the truth." He exhales. "Of course I'm affected. You can't expect me to switch it off." The host steps back. "Let's leave it there. We'll give you a minute." But the camera has already been running. On the monitor mounted beside the stage entrance, the livestream chat scrolls past. Is that the girlfriend? Why would you do that in the middle of a competition? Westbridge was already losing. Can we hear the music instead of this? I step out of the camera's path. Brooke looks at the monitor, then at me. "Happy now?" "You're the one who said it on camera." "Because you keep acting like none of this has anything to do with you." "It doesn't." Evan shifts his guitar strap. "Can we just get through the night?" "Yes," I say. "Without blaming me for how you played." Dylan appears on the other side of the stage entrance, holding a bottle of water. "Everything okay over here?" "No one asked you," Connor says. Dylan smiles. "Sound carries." He looks at Brooke. "Need another minute? Take two." Then his gaze moves to me. "You're not performing, right?" I say nothing. "I've only seen you carrying stuff." Brooke turns away to check her makeup in her phone. Connor starts playing the opening chords again. I stand beside a stack of empty equipment cases and look at the monitor. Another comment appears. Didn't G beat Dylan in that online showcase last year? Someone replies almost immediately. YES. With an old keyboard and no face reveal. I remember that night. The crooked lamp on my desk. My laptop balanced on a stack of textbooks. Grandpa's blue mug beside the keyboard, even though he wasn't there to drink from it anymore. I'd nearly deleted the video instead of submitting it. On the monitor, another message slides into view. Forget another guitar solo. Get G.
