They Switched My Groom, So I Married the Wrong Man
Because I have face blindness, my fiancé thinks he can replace himself with a fake groom at our wedding while he gives my best friend the bridal experience she has always wanted. My parents even hire strangers to impersonate them, certain I'll never know the difference. They're wrong. I recognize the switch the moment I touch the stranger's hand. But instead of exposing them, I choose him on purpose. His name is Ryan, a childhood friend I no longer remember. By the time my fiancé realizes his prank has backfired, I've already turned the wrong groom into my real husband.

Because I have face blindness, my fiancé thinks he can replace himself with another groom at our wedding and I will never know.
So I choose the wrong man on purpose.
Six men stand in front of me in identical black suits.
Ethan calls it the Find Your Groom game.
Everyone in the bridal suite thinks it's hilarious.
I have face blindness.
I can see people's faces. I just can't reliably recognize who they belong to.
Ethan and my best friend, Sophie, have spent years turning that into a joke.
At college reunions, Ethan used to make one of his friends dress exactly like him, then ask me to guess which one was my boyfriend.
At malls, he and Sophie would disappear into fitting rooms, switch clothes with other people, then wait to see how long it took me to find them.
Every time, I begged them to stop.
They always laughed and told me I was too sensitive.
Today, I don't cry.
I walk slowly past all six men.
Then I return to the one standing closest to me.
I place my hand in his.
His fingers close around mine.
Their plan has worked.
Last night, I woke up thirsty.
On my way to the kitchen, I heard voices in the living room.
My parents, Ethan and Sophie.
They weren't planning a wedding surprise.
They were discussing how to use my wedding to give Sophie the bridal experience she had always wanted.
Sophie doesn't want to get married or have children.
But apparently, she has always wanted a wedding.
The experience of being the bride for one perfect day.
My mother had made the first suggestion.
"Claire can't recognize faces anyway."
My father had agreed.
"Then let her pick Ethan from a group. If she chooses the wrong man, everyone can laugh it off."
Ethan had finished the plan.
"We'll run both ceremonies at the same time. I'll do Sophie's first. Afterward, I'll make an excuse, come back, and finish Claire's wedding."
As if my wedding were a shift he could clock into after he finished playing groom for someone else.
Sophie had only asked one question.
"What if she picks the right one?"
Ethan had thought of that too.
He wouldn't be one of the six men.
There was never a correct answer.
Now Sophie smiles brightly.
"Oh my God, Claire. You actually got him on the first try."
The hand I'm holding is larger than Ethan's.
The palm is rougher too.
I may have face blindness.
I'm not stupid.
But I don't expose them.
Instead, I squeeze the stranger's hand and smile.
"Well?"
He goes still.
"What?"
"Are you going to make your bride walk all the way downstairs?"
For half a second, he doesn't move.
Then he quickly turns and crouches in front of me.
I climb onto his back.
His shoulders are broader than Ethan's.
Another difference.
I wrap my arms around his neck.
"Let's go."
He carries me toward the elevator.
I look back at Sophie.
"We'll meet you downstairs."
A tear slips down my cheek and lands against the stranger's neck.
His body stiffens.
When he speaks, he tries to make his voice sound lower.
Closer to Ethan's.
"Did I hurt you?"
I say nothing.
"Is my back uncomfortable?"
I tighten my arms around his shoulders.
"No."
"Then why are you crying?"
I close my eyes.
"I'm happy."
And strangely, that isn't entirely a lie.
Finding out who people really are before I marry one of them feels like a wedding gift.
The stranger carefully lowers me into the waiting car.
He closes the door, circles around, and gets behind the wheel.
Back upstairs, Ethan finally returns to the bridal suite.
Ethan looks toward the empty room.
"Where's Claire?"
第2章
The man beside me barely speaks once we leave the hotel.
He's probably afraid I'll recognize that he isn't Ethan.
He doesn't know I already have.
When the car slows, he checks that my seat belt isn't twisted against my dress.
Things Ethan stopped noticing years ago.
I look out the window and think about my parents.
They have always loved Sophie.
I knew that.
She remembers birthdays.
She brings flowers.
She spots my parents across a room and runs over to hug them before they can even call her name.
I can't do that.
Sometimes my mother has stood directly in front of me at a crowded store and I've walked past her.
Sometimes my father has approached me from somewhere unexpected and I've mistaken him for a stranger.
They know I have face blindness.
Somehow, they still take it personally every time I fail to recognize theirs.
"You've lived with us your whole life," my mother once snapped. "How can you still not know your own parents?"
Sophie never makes that mistake.
So over time, she becomes easier to love.
Apparently, easy enough to replace me on my wedding day.
The stranger glances at me.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
He doesn't believe me, but he doesn't push.
A few minutes later, the car suddenly brakes.
I pitch forward.
His hand shoots out between my forehead and the dashboard.
"Careful."
I steady myself.
"What happened?"
He peers through the windshield.
"Another wedding party."
The road ahead narrows between construction barriers.
Cars fill both sides.
Neither group can get through.
Then I see the vehicle at the front of the other convoy.
A black SUV.
Ethan bought it two weeks ago.
He told me we couldn't use it for our wedding because the registration wasn't finished.
I remember standing beside him when he picked it up.
I remember the vanity plate too.
At the time, I didn't think much about it.
Now I stare.
SL-ILY.
Sophie Lane.
I love you.
Maybe it means nothing.
Maybe Ethan could explain it.
But today, after everything else, I don't care whether he can.
My phone buzzes.
A message from Sophie.
Claire, we're stuck too.
Then another.
Can you ask Ethan to back up a little? Our ceremony is starting soon and we're already running late.
I look at the man sitting beside me.
My "Ethan."
He's frowning at the road.
"I'll get out and see if there's enough space to squeeze past."
He reaches for the door.
I stop him.
"Don't."
He turns toward me.
I point toward a narrow side road just ahead.
"Take that."
He looks at it.
The pavement is cracked and uneven.
"That road's terrible."
"So?"
"It'll slow us down. And if we hit one of those potholes, your dress is going to be gray before we get to the venue."
I look at him.
"I'm not worried about the dress."
He hesitates.
"It also takes us away from the hotel."
"I know."
His hand stays on the steering wheel.
I smile.
"Turn."
He studies me for a second.
"You're sure?"
"Yes."
He starts the car forward.
Then stops again.
"Claire, if we go that way, we're not getting back to the wedding route anytime soon."
I look at him.
"Good."
His brows draw together.
I lean back against the seat.
"What?"
I ask.
"You think taking the wrong road is the biggest problem with my wedding?"
I hold his gaze even though his face means nothing to me.
"Ethan already replaced the groom."
Silence.
Then I point at the turn.
"Drive."
