第1章
My husband finally comes to one prenatal appointment and walks out five minutes later for an "emergency."
I'm eight months pregnant, and this is the first appointment Ethan has managed to attend.
We barely make it through the hospital doors when his encrypted government phone starts buzzing.
A name flashes across the screen.
Ethan, normally calm under pressure, suddenly looks tense.
"Baby, it's a priority federal alert. An international fugitive just entered the country. I have to go."
He gives me a quick apology and rushes out before I can answer.
I stand there clutching my appointment paperwork as his SUV speeds away.
An international fugitive?
What a joke.
My father runs a federal law-enforcement agency. If there were an alert that serious, I'd know about it.
So what emergency could possibly have my husband running out on his wife when she's eight months pregnant?
I hail a cab.
"Follow that SUV."
The driver glances at my stomach in the mirror.
"Cheating husband?"
"That's what we're about to find out."
He hits the gas.
I don't know where Ethan is going, but the sick feeling in my stomach gets worse with every turn.
Finally, his SUV pulls into an upscale gated community.
I exhale.
At least it's not a hotel.
Ethan bought a house here after becoming chief. We lived here briefly before my first pregnancy, until he insisted we move closer to the hospital.
But today, luxury cars line the street outside the house.
Flowers and decorations cover the entrance.
It looks like someone is throwing a huge party.
I start toward the gate, but a security guard blocks me.
"Private event, ma'am."
"I'm Ethan Cole's wife."
The guard looks me up and down.
Then he laughs.
"Chief Cole's wife is Chloe Hayes."
My entire body goes still.
"What?"
"Maybe figure out who you're impersonating before you try something like this."
Chloe Hayes.
The woman my family once helped because she had the rare blood type I needed.
I push past him.
"Sienna! Ma'am, you can't—"
I don't stop.
The house is packed with local officials, senior officers, their spouses, and people I recognize from political circles.
Then I see Diane.
My mother-in-law, who usually avoids social events, is moving through the room like a proud hostess.
And beside her, Ethan is holding a baby, feeding him a bottle with one hand while smiling down at the petite woman pressed against his side.
Years ago, during my first pregnancy, doctors warned that my rare Rh-negative blood type could complicate delivery.
My family found Chloe through a donor network.
She was a struggling college student back then. We covered her medical expenses and tuition.
After I gave birth, Ethan wanted nothing more to do with her.
I felt bad for her.
So I helped her get a stable administrative job at Ethan's department.
I even asked Ethan to check on her from time to time.
And this is how they repay me.
The house Ethan once told me was meant for us has become their home.
They even have a baby.
"Congratulations, Chief Cole!" a woman calls. "Beautiful wife, beautiful son. You've got everything."
Diane beams.
"Ethan's the lucky one. Chloe is the best daughter-in-law I could've asked for."
Ethan leans down and whispers something in Chloe's ear.
She blushes.
"I know some of you wondered why Ethan and I kept our marriage private. We didn't want our personal life affecting his position." She smiles.
"But today is Theo's three-month celebration, so please eat, drink, and enjoy yourselves."
The room erupts in congratulations.
One of Ethan's officers laughs.
"Forget the baby celebration. You two still owe us a wedding toast!"
"Come on, Chief! Kiss your wife!"
Chloe waves them off, embarrassed.
Ethan only laughs and slides an arm around her waist.
Someone hands them two glasses of champagne.
They link arms and Ethan raises his glass—then he sees me.
He shoves Chloe away so fast that champagne spills down the front of her dress.
"Sienna..."
I wipe the tears from my face and walk straight toward them.
Then I slap him.
The entire room goes silent.
Chloe gasps.
"Ethan!"
She rushes toward him, then turns on me.
"Sienna, how dare—"
My second slap sends her stumbling back into Ethan's arms.
My palm burns.
I don't care.
Ethan finally snaps out of his shock.
"Sienna—"
"Ethan Cole!"
My voice cuts over his.
I stare straight into his eyes.
"So this is the 'international fugitive' you had to run out on your pregnant wife for?"

Around us, the room falls completely silent.
Then the baby starts crying.
Diane quickly takes him from Ethan.
The second she settles him in her arms, she turns on me.
"Sienna, what the hell is wrong with you? You and Ethan are divorced! Why are you still stalking him?"
Divorced?
My brow furrows.
The Deputy Chief's wife steps forward.
"Even if you're Chief Cole's ex-wife, you can't storm into his home and assault people."
Whispers spread through the room.
"That's his ex?"
"She just hit the chief."
"Someone should call security."
I grab Ethan by the collar.
"What the hell are they talking about? Since when am I your ex-wife?"
Before he can answer, Chloe slips into his arms.
Her eyes immediately fill with tears.
"Sienna... Ethan already divorced you. Why can't you just let us live our lives?"
She starts crying harder.
"Fine. This is all my fault. I'll leave him. You can have him back, okay?"
Ethan's face changes instantly.
"No."
He grips Chloe's shoulders.
Then he glares at me.
"Sienna, I've already told you I'm not getting back together with you."
"Stop harassing us."
He gestures toward several officers.
"Get her out of here."
Two men grab my arms.
I struggle against them and stumble sideways into Diane.
Then I see the baby's face, his eyes, his nose, the tiny curve of his mouth.
No.
It can't be.
I know that face.
Because I gave birth to him.
"Noah..."
My first son died three months ago.
At least, that's what Ethan told me.
He handled the cremation himself because I was too devastated to go.
But the baby in Diane's arms looks exactly like him.
My breath catches.
Ethan lied to me.
He told me my baby was dead so he could give him to Chloe.
"Give me my baby!"
I rip free from the officers and snatch the baby from Diane.
"He's mine! Give me Noah!"
The baby cries against my chest.
Chloe suddenly panics and rushes toward me.
"Sienna, stop! He's not your baby!"
"I know losing Noah destroyed you. I know you haven't been yourself since then."
Her voice shakes.
"But you can't steal my son because he reminds you of yours!"
She looks around the room desperately.
"Please. Somebody help me."
Then she turns back to me.
"I'll even leave Ethan if that's what you want. Just give me my baby back."
Ethan grabs her.
"No."
His voice is firm.
"You're not leaving me."
He pulls her against his chest.
"No one is breaking up our family."
I stare at them.
"Our family?"
I point at my eight-month belly.
"What about me?"
"What about the baby I'm carrying right now?"
Ethan's eyes flick toward my stomach.
He looks away.
Chloe immediately bursts into fresh tears.
"I'm sorry, everyone. Sienna is Ethan's ex-wife."
"She lost her baby and never recovered."
"After Ethan refused to have another child with her, she started seeing random men because she was desperate to get pregnant again."
My stomach turns.
Chloe wipes her eyes.
"Ethan felt sorry for her, so he kept checking on her. But now she's trying to force him to raise another man's baby."
The room explodes.
"That's disgusting."
"She's insane."
"Get her out!"
I almost laugh.
I look straight at Chloe.
"Do you really want to talk about who's using whom?"
Her face stiffens.
"My family paid your medical bills and your tuition. When you begged me for a stable job, I got you into Ethan's department."
I keep going.
"You had nothing when I met you."
"I helped you because I felt sorry for you."
"And this is how you repay me?"
I glance at Ethan.
"Sleeping with my husband and pretending you're his wife?"
Chloe's lips tremble.
I take one step toward her.
"You wanted my life so badly?"
"How does it feel wearing something that was never yours?"
Before she can answer, someone slams into me from behind.
I stumble forward.
A sharp pain tears through my stomach.

"You're the mistress!"
Diane's shrill voice cuts through the room.
My back slams into the wall.
Pain twists through my abdomen.
Before I can steady myself, Diane rips the baby from my arms and hands him back to Chloe.
Ethan's officers immediately start shouting.
"Everyone in the department knows Chief Cole and Chloe belong together."
"Chloe helped him crack some of his biggest cases."
"That's why he made chief so fast."
I stare at them.
Chloe helped him?
Those cases were mine.
Ethan used to come home with files he couldn't make sense of.
I stayed up night after night going through evidence, timelines, financial records and witness statements.
I gave him the leads and connected the dots.
And now he's giving Chloe credit for that too?
One of the officers sneers at me.
"You're just the crazy ex who kept dragging him down."
I look past all of them.
"Ethan."
My voice is weak, but the room quiets.
"Tell them."
"Tell everyone how you became chief."
"You told me fieldwork was too dangerous. You didn't want to risk your life, so you wanted a desk position. I helped you."
"After we got engaged, you said your rank wasn't high enough. You said you weren't good enough for me."
"I went to my father."
Ethan's jaw tightens.
"And every time a case was too complicated, who stayed up all night helping you find the break you needed?"
"Enough!"
Ethan storms toward me.
His hand closes around my throat. "You liar!" he snarls, tightening his grip.
Black spots explode across my vision.
"Everything I have, I earned myself!"
His face twists with rage.
"I don't owe you a damn thing!"
Ethan's reaction says more than I ever could.
Chloe notices it too.
She suddenly drops to her knees in front of me, still holding the baby.
"Sienna, please."
She starts sobbing.
"I've ignored your lies before because I know you've been struggling."
"But you can't say things like this here. You'll destroy Ethan's career."
She grabs my pant leg.
"I'm begging you. Stop."
Ethan immediately releases my throat and bends down to help her.
Before he can reach her, Chloe hooks an arm around my leg and throws herself backward.
She screams.
"Ah! Sienna, stop kicking me!"
I freeze.
I never touched her.
But Ethan doesn't hesitate.
His palm crashes across my face.
Pain explodes through my cheek.
"Sienna! I've had enough of your bullshit!"
I raise my hand to hit him back.
Before I can, Diane kicks me hard in the lower back.
I fly forward and crash into a display cabinet.
The second I hit the floor, a violent pain tears through my stomach.
Then something warm runs down my legs. When I look down, I see blood. A lot of it.
The room blurs.
"My baby..."
I reach toward Ethan.
"Ethan... my stomach..."
Diane steps on my hand.
"Stop pretending," she spits. "My son isn't falling for your tricks anymore."
Tears blur my vision.
"I'm not pretending."
I look at Ethan.
"Please... take me to the hospital."
He doesn't even turn around.
He's checking Chloe's arms, making sure she isn't hurt.
"Enough, Sienna."
"Apologize to Chloe."
"You always use pregnancy to manipulate me. I'm not falling for it again."
Then he finally looks back.
His eyes drop to the blood spreading beneath me.
For one second, the anger disappears from his face, replaced by fear.
He knows exactly who my family is.
He knows what will happen if he stands here and lets me bleed.
I grip the edge of the cabinet, fighting through another wave of pain.
"Ethan Cole."
He looks at me.
"If anything happens to this baby..."
I force every word through clenched teeth.
"...you killed your own child."
His face turns white.
I press one shaking hand against my stomach.
"And when my father and my brother find out what you did here today..."
I stare at Ethan, Diane, Chloe, and every officer who laid a hand on me.
"...every one of you is going to answer for it."
Another cramp tears through me.
I gasp.
"Now get me to a hospital!"
