After Don Victor Moretti betrayed me, my brother Adrian—whose intellect had never developed past that of a seven-year-old—became a madman no one dared cross. A maid spoke one extra sentence to Victor, and Adrian sewed her mouth shut with a needle and thread while she slept. A female assistant showed up in a short skirt to deliver documents to Victor, and Adrian released the guard dogs. They tore off one of her legs. After every incident, he would curl into my arms like a frightened child. "Don't worry, little sister. I won't let those bad women bully you." I believed him. Until Victor took an actress to a hotel, and Adrian coated the condoms with industrial-strength super glue. The actress suffered severe chemical burns. After she filed a police report, Adrian was committed to a psychiatric facility. I knelt outside her door for three days and three nights, begging through tears for her to spare my brother. She finally relented. "You want a letter of forgiveness? Fine." "Divorce Don Moretti, and I'll sign it." To save Adrian, I didn't hesitate. But when I brought that letter back to the estate, I overheard Victor and Adrian talking on the other side of the study door. "Adrian, you really are clever. If you hadn't played dumb and acted crazy, Nora probably would have refused to divorce me till the day she died." My brother's eyes—those eyes that had always been vacant and clouded—were now terrifyingly clear. "She's too stupid. All those women were actresses we paid. The only one you've actually been sleeping with is Lily." "Now that the divorce is going through, you can bring Lily home. She's suffered enough as an illegitimate daughter. We can't let her child go through the same thing." Lily was my father's illegitimate daughter. She was also the woman who had tormented me for eighteen years. In that instant, I felt every drop of blood in my body turn to ice. With trembling hands, I took out my phone and sent a message to the man who had waited for me for seven years. "Tomorrow I'm getting divorced. Let's go register our marriage." By the time Victor and Adrian emerged from the study, I had already signed the last page of the divorce agreement. Adrian saw my signature, and his face went white. He lunged toward me. "Nora, I'll be good. I promise I won't cause any more trouble." "Don't get divorced. I don't want you to get divorced!" I turned and looked at him. We had depended on each other for ten years. I never knew he was such a brilliant actor. Brilliant enough to stage a car accident for Lily's sake and pretend to be mentally impaired for three years just to deceive me. Brilliant enough that if I hadn't overheard that conversation, I truly would have softened. I would have given up everything for him all over again. Victor stood in the study doorway with his arms crossed, looking down at me. "If you don't want the divorce, that's fine too. Then your idiot brother can keep rotting in the psych ward." "Even if you hold on to this marriage, my heart will never be yours." His cruel smile faltered the moment it met my calm gaze. I asked, "Don't the two of you feel even the slightest bit disgusted with yourselves?" Victor frowned. "What?" "I heard everything." Both their faces changed at the same time. They spoke almost in unison: "Nora Vale, you were eavesdropping on us?" I laughed bitterly. Before any explanation came an accusation. "If I hadn't eavesdropped, would I have spent the rest of my life being kept in the dark? Treated like the real fool?" My voice shook beyond my control. "Why Lily, of all people? Why that bit—" Slap. A hand cracked across my face so hard my head snapped to the side. I clutched my cheek, frozen in shock. Adrian stared at his own hand, equally stunned. Victor pressed his lips into a thin line and looked at me coldly. "Nora, if you have ugly things to say, say them to me. Leave her out of it." I clenched my fists, nails digging deep into my palms. Looking at these two faces—faces I knew down to the bone—I suddenly remembered our childhood. Lily's mother had pushed my mother down the stairs, causing a miscarriage and fatal hemorrhaging. For years after that, they occupied the Vale household, and Lily bullied me relentlessly. She would grab me by the hair, drag me into the bathroom, scrawl "whore" all over my face with a marker, and force me to kneel on the floor and drink dirty water from the toilet. Every single time, Adrian and Victor came to my rescue. Adrian would stand in front of me like a shield. "Lily, touch her one more time and I'll destroy you." Victor would warn her in that cold voice of his. "Bully Nora again, and you won't survive the consequences." Later, Adrian fought tooth and nail to reclaim the Vale household and threw Lily and her mother out. He had promised me with his own mouth: "From now on, no one will ever dare bully you again. You'll never have to see them." I had always believed they hated Lily as much as I did. I thought they ached for every injustice and cruelty I had suffered. But it was all a lie. Blood rushed to my head, and I raised my hand to slap him back with everything I had. "So what if I cursed at her?" "Adrian, she killed Mom! Do you even have a heart?" The slap never landed. Adrian seized my wrist in a vise grip, brow furrowed tight. "That was Mom's own fate." I stared at him in disbelief. Victor let out a cold laugh. "Since you already know, there's no point hiding it anymore." "Bringing Lily home was my idea and Adrian's." "She bullied you when you were kids—we knew about all of it. But she spent all those years as an illegitimate child. It wasn't fair to her. She needed an outlet." He reached over and casually wiped the tears from my face. "As for the accident three years ago, when Adrian pretended to be mentally impaired—that was mainly because Lily didn't want the baby in your belly to be born."

I felt as if those words had been driven straight through my chest. I stared at them in utter disbelief. Three years ago, that car accident took my child from me. After that, I could never become a mother again. My stomach heaved violently. I stumbled into the bathroom and vomited until the room spun around me. Victor's eyes tightened. Almost out of habit, he reached out to rub my back. "Nora, if you really can't live without me, you can stay by my side along with Lily." "I'll set aside one day a week just for you." The Don who had once sworn to protect me for the rest of my life had betrayed me and fallen in love with my father's illegitimate daughter. Behind my back, they had a child together. And now the Don was graciously offering me scraps—asking me to be his mistress. There is no crueler way to kill someone than to murder their heart. I was so furious I laughed through my tears. "Get out." Victor's voice went cold in an instant. "Nora, enough." "If I were you, I'd make good use of whatever guilt we still have left toward you." "After all, without the Moretti family and the Vale family, what are you?" Nearby, Adrian waved his phone at Victor. "Stop wasting your breath on her." "Lily's asking us to take her to her prenatal checkup." Victor paused, as if he wanted to reach for me, but a flash of impatience crossed his face. "Cool off for a while. Let me know your decision when you've thought it through." He stepped past me without a shred of mercy. The slam of the door rang through my eardrums. I sat on the floor in a daze. I don't know how long it was before the relentless buzzing of my phone jolted me back. "After we register tomorrow, let's have the wedding right away." "I've already booked the invitations and the venue." Before I could reply, Victor's call came through. His voice was low, barely containing his fury. "Nora, who gave you permission to leak my relationship with Lily to the press?" "Do you have any idea she's trapped at the hospital right now, surrounded by reporters?" Lily's familiar voice drifted through the receiver, and I couldn't stop myself from dry heaving. "I'm the illegitimate daughter of the Vale family. I understand if you look down on me." "But my child is innocent." "Please, I'm begging you—don't let him suffer the way I did growing up." The next second, Adrian snatched the phone and lashed into me. "Nora, how can you be so vicious?" "Victor was in love with Lily before he ever married you. When you get right down to it, you're the homewrecker! Get yourself to this hospital right now and clear things up!" My hand was shaking around the phone. "And if I refuse?" Victor's voice turned ice-cold. "Nora, don't forget—your mother's ashes are still buried in the cemetery I purchased." "I'm sure you wouldn't want her disturbed in death." It felt as though a knife had carved a chunk right out of my heart. Even my breath tasted of blood. The day my mother died, Lily showed up at the funeral hall in a bright red dress. It was Victor who stepped in front of me and slapped Lily across the face. "Nora is my fiancée. I won't allow anyone to disrespect her mother." But now, for Lily's sake, he was using my mother's remains to threaten me. I wiped my tears and slowly nodded. "I'll go." At the hospital, Adrian and Victor flanked Lily protectively behind them. The moment I walked in, reporters swarmed me with microphones. "Don Moretti says you two divorced three years ago and that you've been refusing to leave the Moretti estate. Is that true?" "Boss Vale has also confirmed that during his period of mental impairment, you were the one manipulating him into hurting people, all so you could keep Don Moretti to yourself." "And now, out of jealousy, you've exposed Miss Lily's private life. Don't you feel any guilt?" One lie after another rained down on me, twisting every truth inside out. Victor glanced at me. "Nora, you created this mess. Clean it up yourself." "This is the price you pay for clinging to me." He said it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Not a flicker of guilt on his face. Lily stepped forward and looped her arm through his, gazing at me with tear-filled eyes. "I've already given you the title of Mrs. Moretti." "If that's still not enough, I'll get on my knees and apologize." "All I ask is that you stop hurting my child."

The words had barely left her mouth when Lily raised her hand and slapped herself—cleanly, decisively. Victor's expression twisted with heartache, and he turned on me with fury in his eyes. "Apologize to Lily." I let out a wretched laugh. "Apologize?" "Sorry for not stepping aside fast enough for your mistress, or sorry for catching you in your li—" Before I could finish, Adrian glanced at the bodyguard behind me. The bodyguard clamped down on my shoulders immediately, and a palm cracked across my face. Once. Then again. My mouth filled with the taste of blood. I lost track of how long it went on before they finally stopped and let me go. I crumpled to the floor. Victor watched me with a blank expression. "Why do you insist on making things harder for yourself?" "If you don't apologize, I can't guarantee what I promised you on the phone." I instinctively looked at Adrian. "You knew he was going to—" "It doesn't matter." Adrian cut me off impatiently, his voice cold as ice. "As long as Lily's happy, nothing else matters." Something detonated inside my skull. I swallowed the blood rising in my throat and mechanically raised my hand. I slapped myself across the face, over and over, as hard as I could. "I'm shameless." "I was the one clinging to Victor." "I'm the homewrecker." "I'm the one who wouldn't leave even after the divorce..." What happened after that, I can barely remember. Lights and shadows blurred together—nothing but camera flashes firing at me from every direction. They never intended to leave me a way out. They didn't just want to ruin my life. They wanted to destroy my reputation so thoroughly I could never recover. I ignored the flood of abuse pouring into my phone and collapsed on the bed, staring at the ceiling as tears rolled down my temples. The door opened. Victor walked in carrying a tube of ointment. "Does it hurt? Let me put some medicine on." He seemed to have rushed back from somewhere—his clothes were soaked through—but he dried his hands first and carefully applied the ointment to my face. I've been terrified of pain since I was little. The first time Lily ever hurt me, it was just a scrape on my arm. Victor had nearly lost his mind trying to make her pay. I once believed that was love. But it was all just them treating me like a circus act, watching me spin in the palm of their hand. When I said nothing, Victor's voice softened with something that sounded like remorse. "Nora, I owe you. I know that." "Don't blame me. I have to think about the baby Lily's carrying." "And the public backlash hasn't fully died down yet. I want you to be my witness at the wedding. It's the only way Lily can marry me with a clean reputation." His hand gently rubbed my cheek. Inside, I felt nothing but cold. No wonder he had stooped to an apology for the first time in his life. At the end of the day, it was still about Lily. "Tomorrow, let's go finalize the divorce paperwork." He froze for a split second, then pulled me into his arms. "Nora, I knew it. You still love me. You can't stand to see me in a difficult position." "From now on, I'll set aside two days every week just for you." His embrace should have felt familiar, but it made my stomach turn. I pushed him away. "That won't be necessary." "I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea." He looked taken aback. Before he could respond, the door swung open. Lily bounced into Victor's arms with a grin, then turned and stuck her tongue out playfully at Adrian in the doorway. "See? I told you. She'll agree to anything as long as she gets to keep hanging around you two." She smiled with that innocent look of hers, swaying against Victor's waist. "You both lost the bet. You promised—if I won, you'd grant me one wish." "I want to wear the vintage wedding dress from the safe." The moment I heard those words, my entire body began to tremble.
