How terrifying is a man who's a simp and knows that he's one?
In three years of dating, I've transferred six million dollars to my girlfriend, Nadine Stark. I made sure every transaction was labeled as a willing gift.
I know she only sees me as her personal ATM, but I still go along with it.
We break up over something ridiculous. I'm a little late in transferring money to her once, and she screams at me to get lost over and over again.
So I do.
That's when Nadine loses it. She starts stalking and harassing me, and she spreads rumors about me. She claims I have an STD, that I've stolen her gold necklace worth 150 thousand dollars, and that I've abused her cat to death.
In the end, I lose all hope in her and switch to being a simp for someone else instead. But she's still not okay with that.
Nadine actually drops to her knees before me to apologize and slaps herself across the face. She breaks down in tears and begs me to take her back. She wants me to love her again.
Chapter 1
When I was 18, I honestly believed that true love could conquer anything. I believed that if two people really loved each other, they would make it to the end.
My girlfriend, Nadine Stark, was nine years older than me. We'd been together for three years, and I loved her down to the bone.
My family thought the age gap was way too big and disapproved of us. My dad even forced me to break up with her.
But after we split, she started going drinking every night, and I missed her like mad. Pathetic as it was, I went crawling back and got back together with her.
To let loose a little, we went to Sandoff Isle. But the minute we arrived, she ditched me and went clubbing on her own. We were supposed to let off steam together and have a little getaway for just the two of us, but she forgot all about that.
I ended up seeing a video of her at the club on her friend's social media. There were a few guys with them, too. In the video, Nadine was a little tipsy, and her cheeks were flushed pink.
I was upset and told myself I wasn't going after her, but I couldn't stop worrying. I went anyway.
Outside the club, I saw Nadine talking to her friends.
"Honestly, dating an influencer is so overrated," she said. "Like, on the surface it looks all cute, but behind the scenes he's basically a block of wood. He's six feet tall, but there's barely anything he can do. Half the stuff I wanna try, he won't even do. He's no fun in bed at all."
Her friends burst out laughing.
"No way! You've gotta be kidding." One of them cackled.
"Maybe you're the problem. Aaron has, like, millions of people following him just because of his boy-toy face. One look, and he could have people falling at his feet."
"Yeah. Stop messing with us."
"Oh, please." Nadine scoffed. "You think he's some kind of sex god? He's just a clueless kid. He has no skills, is too shy for anything even slightly kinky, and refuses to let me train him. He's boring as hell."
The moment I heard her voice, I got so nervous that my breathing turned shaky. I froze in place as tears filled my eyes.
One of her friends, Mikaela Green, noticed me standing at the door and nudged her. "Cut it out unless you want Aaron to hear all this."
Nadine glanced back at me like it was nothing, then continued drawling, "So what if he does? He's born to be my simp. I could tell him to get lost, and he'd still cling to me like a piece of chewed gum. There's no shaking him off."
I stood there in the doorway, feeling like I'd just had a bucket of ice-cold water dumped over me. I didn't know whether to walk away or stay.
I was a doormat—a terrifyingly self-aware one.
I couldn't leave Nadine. No matter what she did, I couldn't bring myself to walk away. Not even when my dad forced me to break up with her, and not even when she called me her simp in front of so many people. I still couldn't let go of what we had.
On some level, I did love her that much. She was all I had. So when she finally waved me over, I swallowed the hurt and walked toward her, feeling almost numb inside.
Some guy was sitting next to her. Even as I approached, he showed no intention of moving. He just sat there, smoking away.
I reached my hand out to Nadine, my voice small and hurt. "Nadine, can we go back now?"
My nose stung. I knew I was immature, and sometimes I hated myself for it. I hated the way she was acting, but I still couldn't leave her. I couldn't be as carefree and heartless about this as she was.
Chapter 2
Maybe this was the ultimate form of being hopelessly in love—knowing exactly how badly it hurt and still refusing to let go.
"Aaron, either sit down and behave or go stand somewhere else. Quit getting on everyone's nerves. If your dad hadn't started all this shit, would I even be out here drinking and trying to blow off steam?" Nadine snapped.
I froze on the spot, saying nothing. I just watched that guy lean in closer and closer to Nadine. When I couldn't take it anymore, I stepped forward, grabbed him by the collar, and yanked him away.
She was dressed provocatively, with barely enough fabric covering the important bits. I shrugged off my jacket and wrapped it around her.
She shot me a glare, but when she saw how red my eyes were, she didn't say anything.
The guy gave me a mocking look, lit a cigarette, and laughed. "Well, well, well. And here I thought our big influencer was so addicted to playing simp that he'd just stand there and watch."
I leveled a hard stare at him in warning. "Stay away from my girlfriend from now on, or I won't be so nice next time."
"Hah. And what if it's your girlfriend who keeps coming to me?"
I was about to answer when Nadine cut me off. She shot me an irritated look and growled, "Can you stop being such a brat, Aaron? Quit making a scene. We're all out here to have a good time, and you just have to ruin the mood. Look, just go sing some songs for everyone and hype things up a bit."
I stared at her in disbelief. She ignored the look on my face, took the mic Mikaela handed over, and tossed it to me.
"Yeah, come on. Let's hear a few songs from Mr. Influencer!"
"We should thank Nad for hooking us up. You influencers sing for strangers on livestreams all day, anyway. Singing here shouldn't be a big deal."
"Why are you just standing there, Mr. Influencer? Think you're too good for us?"
"So your followers are worthy of hearing you sing, but we aren't?"
Their cruel, humiliating teasing sank into my heart like a thorn. Pain shot through me with every heartbeat.
My eyes stayed glued to Nadine the whole time. Finally, she snapped at me impatiently.
"Look at you. Who's that attitude for, huh? Sure, you're some big influencer, but only because everyone decided to hype you up. What makes you think you can act like a diva here?
"With that nasty temper of yours, I'm literally the only person who'd even put up with you. If you don't wanna sing, then fine. Just get lost. Stop embarrassing yourself in front of everyone."
My heart twisted painfully. Everyone looked at me with pity, like they were watching a circus act.
"Are you coming back with me or not?" My voice came out rough, with a hint of pleading I couldn't hide.
But Nadine still made no move to leave. She refused to even look at me, her face twisted with nothing but disgust.
I bit my lip and turned to go. The moment I stepped out, deafening laughter exploded behind me. They were all laughing at me.
Tears slipped down my face without a sound as I walked alone through the streets of Sandoff Isle, shivering as if the chill was coming from deep within my bones.
Couples passed by me, laughing and wrapped up in their own little worlds. Their happiness only made my loneliness feel even more terrifying.
At some point, the love story I'd pictured in my head had stopped matching the reality I was living, but I couldn't accept it. I refused to give up just like that.
At this age, I still honestly believed that love mattered more than anything.
I'd actually planned to propose to Nadine that night. I'd made up my mind—no matter how hard my family tried to get between us, I was going to be with her.
I pulled out a diamond ring box from my pocket and gripped it tightly as I dialed Nadine's number over and over. I lost track of how many times I called her, but she didn't pick up once.
The emotionless automated message played in my ear while the sharp corners of the ring box pressed painfully into my palm. I clenched it so tightly that it almost cut into my skin; it took everything I had not to break down in tears right there in the street.
I hated myself so much for being like this, but I just couldn't bring myself to let Nadine go.
Chapter 3
I was painfully aware of everything, and that only made it hurt more.
Nadine and I had been together for three years. In the beginning, we were amazing. She told me she would love me for the rest of her life, always stay by my side, give me everything she had, and treat me right.
I stood out in the wind alone for what felt like forever. Only after I called her until her phone was finally powered off did I drag myself toward the airport.
This was supposed to be a couples' getaway for the two of us to unwind together, but I was the only one going home now.
The loneliness was almost unbearable, and when I got home, I couldn't find my cat, Puffball.
Puffball was my emotional lifeline. She'd been with me for a long time, always curled up right beside me for so many of my livestreams.
I couldn't get through to Nadine, so I called the staff I'd hired to help feed Puffball while I was away. No one picked up, so I had no choice but to go to their storefront in the middle of the night to look for Puffball.
I waited there all night and finally saw the staff member at daybreak. When he heard I was there for Puffball, he gave me a strange look. Then, he gave me an address and told me that Puffball was there.
I couldn't believe my ears, but I still followed his directions to the trash cans by the south gate of the residential complex. There weren't many people around, and the trash hadn't been taken out yet. I spotted Puffball's snow-white body instantly.
That was it for me. I collapsed to my knees and just sobbed as if my whole world had ended. The tears wouldn't stop, and the pain in my chest only got sharper and sharper.
I never imagined that Puffball, who'd been with me for many years, would already be dead. Her body was covered in wounds, large and small. She was frozen stiff and already starting to rot in that reeking trash bin.
I couldn't accept that any of this was real. I yanked at my own hair, desperately trying to remember the last time I saw her.
Dad had forced me to go home, so I'd left Puffball in Nadine's care. She promised she'd take good care of her, but I was still worried, so I'd arranged for someone to check on her every day.
After that, I'd been in such a rush to take Nadine to Sandoff Isle that I hadn't gone home to check on Puffball myself. I never thought she would die because of it.
According to the staff member, Nadine had been abusing Puffball. Whenever she was angry, she would take it out on Puffball. The staff member had tried to stop her, but she'd snapped that it was a family matter and that he, as an outsider, had no right to interfere.
I drifted through the next few days in a daze. Nadine knew perfectly well how much Puffball meant to me. Every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was Puffball's broken little body, covered in wounds.
Losing her gutted me. It felt like the only thing I had left was this half-dead relationship.
…
The day Nadine came back from Sandoff Isle, I was a little late wrapping up a battle with another streamer. She stormed into my place, looking furious.
The moment I saw her livid face filling my livestream frame, my whole body went rigid. All I could see in my mind was Puffball's mangled body.
"Aaron, you bastard. Have you forgotten what day it is?" she snapped.
Her words suddenly reminded me that it was the 15th. In the past, whenever I was late, she would lose her mind and go off on me, screaming for ages.
"Nadine, can we talk later?" I asked in a small voice.
But all I saw in her eyes was impatience. Without warning, she raised her hand and slapped me across the face. Her nails scraped my cheek, leaving behind a burning sting.
Comments began flooding the livestream, but Nadine ignored them. She pointed at me with her phone and started screeching at me.
"You've really grown a pair, haven't you? What, do you want me to threaten you with a breakup again? Where's the money for today? Why hasn't it hit my account yet?
"Do I have to repeat myself every single time? How many times do I have to spell it out before you finally grow up? I don't wanna be stuck babysitting you forever!"
Chapter 4
I lowered my eyes and kept my mouth shut, doing my best not to look so pathetic. Bitterness spread through my chest, and I clenched my fists so hard that my nails dug into my palms.
When Nadine finally ran out of steam from all the screaming, the streamer I'd been battling couldn't stand it anymore and spoke up.
"Aaron, why are you simping for a woman like this? She's got nothing going for her, yet she acts like she's some princess. I'm honestly speechless. All she does is squeeze money out of you and gaslight you all day.
"Can you wake the hell up already? Don't make me lose respect for you. You're only 21, and you've already achieved more than almost everyone your age. You treat her like gold, but have you ever stopped to think about what you are to her? You're an ATM. That's it!"
Ever since Puffball died, I'd been pretending I was okay and acting like everything was fine, but I couldn't keep the mask on anymore.
I turned away, trying to hide how broken I felt. I looked at Nadine, silently begging her not to fight with me in front of everyone watching the stream.
She ignored me completely. Instead, she pointed straight at the camera and snapped, "Shut the hell up! I'm talking to my boyfriend. What does this have to do with any of you?
"Don't think I don't know what you guys are trying to do. All you care about is using people for attention. You're just a bunch of online beggars. Stop acting like you get to lecture me!"
Online beggars. The way she said it was vicious.
A relentless ache throbbed in my chest, so intense that I could barely breathe. Before I could say anything, Nadine turned her attention back to me.
"I swear these idiots have brainwashed you, Aaron. If you're not gonna listen to me, then get the hell out of my life. Now! Right this second! Get lost!"
She grabbed whatever was around her and started smashing everything. She smashed my stand, my speakers, and my audio interface.
This was our home and also my streaming studio. Now, in front of all these people, she was trashing the place piece by piece.
The livestream chat was exploding with comments, but I didn't read a single one. I simply ended the stream in silence.
"Nadine, why did Puffball die? Why was she covered in wounds? She was such a good girl. What did she do to get on your nerves? Why did you just toss her in the trash? You knew how much she meant to me. Didn't you promise you'd take good care of her?"
I threw out question after question, my eyes red-rimmed and gleaming with unshed tears. I still couldn't believe the person I loved most had destroyed what was most precious to me.
Nadine snorted. "It was just a damn animal, wasn't it? So what if I hit it a few times? So what if it died? What are you gonna do about it? Stop using that ball of trash as an excuse to pick a fight with me."
I loved cats. Like, really, really loved them. And Puffball had been like family to me. Nadine knew that.
My eyes were red and swollen, and every breath came out shaky. The pain was so sharp that it made me want to run from my own skin.
My silence only made Nadine double down. She yanked at my shirt over and over, cursing nonstop. "Get out! Just get out of my life! The farther, the better. I'm sick of looking at you!"
Then, she stormed off, slamming the door on her way out. She knew I was sobbing my heart out and falling apart, but she still didn't turn back to comfort me.
By now, I was used to it. Nine whole years separated us. To her, I was always the childish one, the dramatic one, and the one who was always making a fuss over nothing.
And to me, she was almost frighteningly composed. Most of the time, I couldn't even tell if she actually loved me.
Still, I was too far gone in my blind love and devotion to Nadine. Every time, I lied to myself, convincing myself that we had a great relationship, that she really did love me.
I switched off the lights and cried alone in the darkness for what felt like forever. I was a grown man, yet I was reduced to sobbing like a child.
Nadine didn't come home that night. Instead, I received a bunch of videos from other people. She was back at some club again, practically draped over some guy as she danced with him.
I sat there in the dark without moving, as if I'd turned to stone.
And when dawn finally came, I wiped my face dry. I told myself that some things had gone as far as they could go.
