I took a silver bullet for my Alpha mate, and it destroyed my body. After eight failed procedures and eight times being abandoned for the woman he always swore meant nothing, I gave him one last chance: show up for me. He chose her again. So I canceled the final procedure, revoked his rights, and left the pack. Only after I was gone did he realize I was never coming back, and his desperate chase turned into the cruelest punishment.

Three years ago, during a border raid, I took a silver bullet for my Alpha mate, Enzo. The silver poison destroyed my womb. For three years, the Blackthorn Pack doctor tried to repair the damage before finally telling me, in a low, careful voice, "Luna Elena, your body can't take many more healing procedures. This is your last chance to have a pup." Enzo had missed the last eight mating windows, every single one because of Nina, the lone wolf he had rescued five years earlier. The first time, I took the heat-inducing pills. My body had gone cold from waiting too long to mate, cramps twisting through my abdomen, and I ended up curled on the rug in the master bedroom, trying to reach him through the mindlink. He told me he'd be there in twenty minutes. Twenty minutes later, he told me Nina had lost control during a night training session, spiraled into a breakdown, and he had to go to the training grounds first. The second time, the fertility drugs made me vomit nonstop. Enzo kept the mindlink open while Nina talked him through the next day's training schedule. "If we miss this cycle, we'll just wait for the next full moon." He said it so casually, like what I was going through barely mattered. The eighth time, I had a 104-degree fever and was lying in the recovery lounge at the pack hospital, waiting for Enzo to come confirm the procedure. In the end, his phone was off, and he had blocked me on the mindlink too. The next morning, Nina finally texted me. "Sorry, Elena." "My chest got tight during patrol last night. I almost collapsed on the mountain trail, so Enzo took me to the ER." "But don't worry. I've already rescheduled him for next Monday. Your procedure won't be delayed this time." I stared at the message, my fingertips slowly going cold. The pack had long since gotten used to seeing the Alpha with Nina at every kind of function. Somewhere along the way, she had gone from pitiful lone wolf to the Beta handling the Alpha's personal schedule. Everyone assumed that as long as Nina kept track of his calendar, nothing would fall through the cracks. Because for years now, it wasn't me, the Luna, running Enzo's daily life. It was her. I told the doctor, "Cancel the procedure." "Luna, this is your best chance of conceiving. The injections are already prepared. If we cancel now, three months of preparation will be wasted." "I know. Cancel it." The moon priestess studied me for a long moment, then nodded. "As you wish, Luna." By that evening, the bloodline dissolution papers had been delivered to me. I signed my name, pressed my thumbprint to the page, and sealed it with wolf blood. That night, for once, Enzo came home before ten. He was still on the phone with Nina when he walked in, and he didn't really look at me until the call ended. "Nina confirmed everything for Monday." He tossed his cloak over the back of a chair. "You don't need to worry. Nothing's going to go wrong this time." The dissolution papers I had just printed were lying on the dining table. He reached for them. My chest tightened. But then his phone rang again. Nina. Enzo answered almost immediately. "What's wrong?" He turned away, his voice softening at once. "You're short of breath again? Did you skip meals today?" "Don't stay alone. I'm coming over." I stood there, watching him already reach for his coat. "Nina doesn't need to reschedule the ninth procedure." Enzo paused, then finally turned to look at me. He frowned and lifted a hand toward my forehead. I stepped back. "The last few times were my fault." "This time I've cleared my schedule. I'll be with you all day, okay?" I looked at him without saying a word. His phone buzzed again. A new message from Nina. "Enzo, I really can't be alone right now." His brow furrowed immediately. "She's not in a good place right now." His hand was already on the doorknob. "I'll go check on her. We'll talk when I get back." "Enzo." I stopped him. "What I want to say isn't about Monday." He turned back, and for the first time, I saw real impatience flash across his face. "Then what is it?" I looked at him and said nothing. Once the door shut, the pack house fell silent again. I sat back down at the table, logged into the pack medical system, and removed all his access. I revoked his status as my emergency contact and blood-bond partner. From that moment on, Enzo no longer had permission to view my treatment records. This time, I didn't need him there. And I didn't need his consent.

At 2:13 a.m., Nina texted me. "Elena, sorry for taking up Alpha's time again in the middle of the night. Hope you're not upset." She attached a photo. Enzo was standing in the kitchen, heating up a pot of chicken soup for her. His sleeves were rolled up, and his movements looked practiced and patient. In our six years as mates, Enzo had almost never cooked for me himself. He used to say that once our pup inherited the Alpha position, he'd make me breakfast every morning. Instead, the first thing I got was him staying up late to make soup for someone else, no matter how busy he was. I stared at the photo for three seconds, then deleted the message I'd been about to send him. Early the next morning, I went to see the moon priestess and formally accepted the job offer from the trade council in Cliffshore Free City. It was a neutral coastal city, unaffiliated with any pack. Supernaturals and humans lived side by side there, under rules nothing like pack law. Back in the storage room, I dragged out three years' worth of treatment records. Silver stimulation logs, bloodline monitoring charts, anesthesia consent forms, recovery notes, neurological evaluations after every failed attempt. An entire box full. Enzo saw it before he left and frowned. "You'll need those for follow-up appointments. Don't dig through them." "There won't be any follow-ups." That afternoon, before I went to the pack hospital for one last round of bloodwork and an ultrasound, I opened the passenger door and saw a pale blue thermos sitting on the seat. A Post-it was stuck to it. "Nina. Don't skip breakfast again." I stood there beside the car without getting in. Enzo turned in the driver's seat to look at me. "What is it? Move her stuff." "It's just a thermos." "I don't want to sit next to her things." The air went still. Enzo stared at me, then leaned over and moved the thermos to the back seat, his voice turning colder. "She just left it in the car. You don't have to twist everything into something ugly." I turned to look out the window. I had no interest in arguing over whether Nina did it on purpose. No matter how many times it happened, he always took her side. At the pack hospital, the receptionist recognized me and gave me a professional smile. "Good afternoon, Luna. Miss Cole already called this morning to confirm your paperwork." I stopped short. "Miss Cole?" The nurse glanced down at her notes. "Nina Cole. She said she was coordinating Alpha's schedule and wanted to make sure everything was set for Monday." I stood there, my fingertips curling tighter. Nina had bypassed me and inserted herself directly into my treatment. Enzo's phone rang. The second he answered, his expression tightened. "What? You're alone at the training base?" "Don't panic. I'm on my way." I looked at him. "Her again?" "Her evaluation got moved up. She's not doing well." Enzo was already turning to leave. "Today's just routine healing. You can go in by yourself." "If you walk out today," I said, watching his back, my voice quiet but sharp, "we're done." Enzo turned around like the thought had never crossed his mind. "Elena, can you not do this right now?" "Do this?" I looked at him and let out a short laugh. "You're my mate, and every time I need you, you leave. And somehow this is me causing a problem?" Enzo's face darkened. "I told you, stop lumping everything together." "No." "You're the one who decided what matters. And somehow I'm always second to her." Before he could answer, Nina's voice came through the phone, tearful and shaky. "Enzo... please..." He turned and left almost immediately. "Text me when you're done." He threw the words over his shoulder and walked out without looking back. I stood at the entrance of the pack hospital, watching him disappear around the corner. Then I turned and walked back to the front desk. "I want to revoke every authorization for this cycle." The nurse blinked. "All of them?" "All of them." She led me into a small office in the back. As I signed the last form, my phone buzzed. Nina. "So sorry, Elena. Stole Alpha away from you again." I stared at the message and, strangely enough, laughed. The nurse looked at me carefully. "Luna, are you all right?" I hit confirm. "I'm fine." As I walked out of the pack hospital, I pulled up the onboarding documents from Cliffshore Free City. Then I deleted every app on my phone that tracked heat cycles, appointments, and moon phases.

I was walking out of the pack hospital just as Enzo's car pulled up to the curb. He strode over and reached for me as if nothing had happened. "All done? Are you hurting anywhere?" I angled away, avoiding his hand. Enzo's hand hung in the air for a second. Then he reached into the back seat and pulled out a paper bag. "You haven't eaten. Drink something warm first." The irony was almost unbearable. He could cook with his own hands for his Beta. And I, his Luna, got whatever takeout he had grabbed on the way. We had been driving for a while when he suddenly asked, "You don't have anything else planned today, do you?" As if only just remembering, his voice softened. "If you're free this afternoon, let's stop by the mall." "For what?" "To pick up some baby stuff," he said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "We should start getting ready." "I don't want to go." "Elena." There was already a warning edge in his voice. "Stop letting your emotions get the better of you. It's not good for the pregnancy." I turned to the window and said nothing. Ten minutes later, the car pulled up outside a baby store. Enzo glanced at his phone and said, "Nina's meeting us too. Her friend just had a pup, and she wants to pick up a gift while we're here." I turned to look at him. "And you're only telling me now?" "It's on the way." He said it like that settled everything. "You don't need to be so hostile toward her." A few minutes later, Nina pulled the door open. "Luna, hope I'm not interrupting." I looked at her and said nothing. She, meanwhile, acted completely at ease. She walked straight over to Enzo and started looking at strollers with him. "Enzo, is this the one you said had the better safety rating?" She rested a hand on the handle and smiled up at him. "You really know more about this than I do." A sales associate came over, glanced between the two of them, and smiled. "Shopping for your first stroller?" Before Enzo could answer, Nina laughed and shook her head. "Oh no, we're just picking out a gift." She paused, then added half-jokingly, "Though he really has been doing his research on strollers lately." The clerk gave them a knowing smile. "I can tell. You two are taking this very seriously." I stood a few steps away, watching Nina push a stroller around and discuss materials, features, and brands with Enzo, as if they were the ones expecting a pup. Enzo didn't correct her. When the clerk stepped away to get a catalog, Nina idly picked up a baby monitor from the shelf and said lightly, "Isn't it a little early to be shopping for all this?" She looked at me, her tone casual. "I mean, you still have to make it through the procedure first, right?" The air went completely still. Enzo's expression changed. I looked at Nina. "You have no right to discuss my medical information in public." Nina's smile faltered. A second later, her eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry." She bit her lip, her voice going small. "Enzo talks about it so much, I forgot for a second what I shouldn't say." That apology was crueler than no apology at all. She was telling everyone within earshot that Enzo had shared everything with her, my privacy and my pain. Before I could say anything, Enzo frowned. "She apologized." I turned to him. "You really can't hear what she's doing?" "She misspoke once." Enzo's voice turned cold. "You don't have to take everything as a personal attack." I stared at him, my chest tightening. "She discussed my procedure in public, and you think that was just a slip?" Nina was already crying. "Elena, I really didn't mean to." She tugged gently at Enzo's sleeve, as if she were trying to hold herself together. "I was just worried about you. If you're upset, I'll leave." Enzo turned to her immediately, his voice softening at once. "You don't have to leave." Then he looked back at me, his eyes completely cold. "That's enough, Elena." "Do you really have to make a scene in public?" I looked at him, and suddenly I couldn't get a single word out. Just then, the door opened again. It was Mark, one of Enzo's friends. He saw me, then glanced at Nina standing beside Enzo, and his expression shifted. "Elena, are you and Enzo...?" Enzo didn't look at me first. The first thing he did was hand Nina a tissue. "Take your time." I turned and walked out. Enzo came after me and caught my wrist. His voice was low, but the anger in it was unmistakable. "She apologized. How long are you going to keep dragging this out?" I looked at him, and then, somehow, I smiled. "Enzo, have you still not figured out that Nina was never the real problem?" He frowned. "Then what is?" "It's you." "You're the one who made her think she could schedule you, speak for you, and take my place by your side." Enzo's face went cold. "You're too emotional to talk right now." "Then let's not." I raised a hand to flag down an Uber. Enzo tightened his grip on my wrist. "Elena." I looked down at his hand and said softly, "Let go." His grip loosened slightly. "I didn't choose her." I let out a quiet laugh. "Then if she called right now and said she wasn't feeling well, would you leave again?" Enzo was silent. A second was all I needed. I pulled my hand free and got into the Uber that had just pulled up.
