At my engagement party, my mafia fiancé’s mistress dumped pig’s blood over my white dress and called me cursed. Lorenzo punished her so hard everyone said he loved me more than his own life. I believed it—until I heard her voice coming from the basement of our home. He had never sent her away. He had hidden her right under me. She beat me, trapped me, made me lose a baby I never knew I had. Lorenzo blamed me, doubted me, and chose her again and again. So I ran. On the West Coast, Damian King gave me a new life. But when Lorenzo came back begging, his mistress came back too—with a car aimed straight at me.

第1章

At my engagement party, Lorenzo and I were standing on the stage, receiving toasts from the whole family. Then Bianca Russo came flying out of the crowd with that bucket. “You cursed jinx! Stay the hell away from Don Moretti!” She spun toward Lorenzo, eyes wet, voice cracking. “What does she have that I don’t?” Lorenzo slapped her clean across the face and had two of his men drag her out. “Listen to me. I don’t fuck around with street rats. You touch Aria again, and I’ll bury you myself.” But Bianca didn’t stop. She wouldn’t stop. She jumped me outside my building. Threw hot coffee in my face. Paid some guys to corner me in a parking garage. Every single time, Lorenzo shut her down. Hard. Then one night, she wired a bomb to my car. I spent a month in the ICU. My right leg never walked straight again. Lorenzo lost it. He broke both her legs with a tire iron and pulled strings to get her sent upstate to federal prison. Everyone in the family said the same thing — “Don Moretti would die for that woman.” Until the day I went down to the wine cellar for a bottle of red. I heard voices through the wall. Soft. Wet. Familiar. It was Bianca. “My leg still aches when it rains. You were rough with me, baby.” Lorenzo was quiet for a second. Then, flat: “Then remember it.” She giggled. “What would little Aria think if she knew you were punishing me… in bed?” “Enough.” “I’m kidding. Just keep me company every day, and I won’t stray.” My blood turned to ice. So this was our undying love. --- This. “Softer, Lorenzo. Jesus, you’re always so rough.” Her voice came through the wall again. “Does your precious Aria ever see you like this, Don? What would she do if she heard us right now?” “Shut up.” “You like me better. You only keep her around because you feel sorry for her, right?” “Focus, little girl.” “Lorenzo, I want out. I’ve been in this basement for months. I’m losing my mind down here.” “Not yet. It’s not time.” My nails dug into my palms until I felt blood. Bianca was supposed to be locked up upstate. So how the hell was she in my house? In my basement? How long? A month? Six months? Or had she never seen the inside of a prison at all? I turned and dragged myself up the stairs. At the bedroom door, my knees gave out. I hit the floor and stayed there. I lay flat on my back, staring at the ceiling, tears sliding sideways into my hair. Everything came rushing back. When I was eighteen, my parents were killed in a mafia crossfire meant for my father. He was a made man. They shoved me under a car and covered me with their bodies while the bullets and rubble came down. They died. I lived. After that, I couldn’t handle closed spaces. Elevators, tunnels, low ceilings — I’d stop breathing. Lorenzo built this penthouse for me. A glass ceiling over the whole top floor. He said, “Aria, no walls will ever cage you here. Look up. There’s always sky.” He took me to the best doctors. Flew me around the world when the nightmares got bad. Held me every single night I woke up screaming. I finally gave him my heart. All of it. Back then, he loved me like it hurt him. Now… A pair of hands lifted me off the floor. Lorenzo was frowning. “What the hell are the staff doing? My wife is on the ground and nobody sees her?” I looked up at him. He had cleaned up. Not a mark on him. Nothing to show what he had just been doing. Except the collar. He had flipped it up, but I could still see the edge of a bite mark on his neck. I pushed his hand away. “I sent them home early.” Something thudded downstairs. I stared into his eyes. “Someone’s down there?” His pupils flickered. He smiled. “You’re hearing things, baby. Probably the pipes.” I didn’t say another word. Lying in bed that night, I couldn’t close my eyes. When I woke up, Lorenzo was gone from beside me. He was on the couch, looking troubled. “Aria. Bianca’s trending on Twitter.” I opened my phone. TMZ had a whole spread up. “Don Moretti’s former protégée released early on good behavior. Nowhere to go, no family. Begs for forgiveness.” “Will the Don show mercy?” “Take her in, Lorenzo! Have a heart!” Lorenzo sighed. “The whole city’s watching. If I don’t take her in, tomorrow we look cold-blooded. The Consigliere is on my back about the family’s image.” “Just… let her stay a little while, baby.” The words weren’t even out of his mouth before someone burst into the room and dropped to their knees in front of me. Bianca. Slapping her own face. Sobbing. “Aria! I’m garbage! I know I was wrong! Please forgive me!”

Something sharp twisted in my chest. I didn’t need to guess. Lorenzo had bought that TMZ story himself. He couldn’t just walk her out of that basement, so he was using the press to force me to nod yes. I forced out one word. “Fine.” Bianca’s face lit up. Her eyes flicked to Lorenzo. Fast. Loaded. I pretended I didn’t see it. Late that night, the mattress shifted beside me. Lorenzo murmured, “I’ve got a few emails to answer.” I kept my eyes shut. The second his footsteps faded, I got up and followed him down the hall to the study. The door was cracked open. Bianca’s voice was low and full of laughter. “I knew you’d come find me. Your body doesn’t lie, Don.” “Shut up.” “You always tell me to shut up, but you never stop, do you?” I stood there and dug my nails into my palms until they bled. I went back to bed and pulled the stuffed bear he gave me three years ago against my chest. Back then, he had told me, “Hold this and the nightmares can’t touch you.” I pressed my face into it. My chest burned. There was something broken in me now that I didn’t think would ever grow back. That weekend, Lorenzo had some of his crew over for dinner. His young lieutenants. His up-and-comers. Three rounds of whiskey in, somebody brought up the engagement party. “Real talk — the boss’s woman marrying him? She hit the lottery. She was never in his league.” My fork stopped halfway to my mouth. Another one jumped in. “Bianca went overboard, sure. But she wasn’t totally wrong, was she?” They laughed. Loud. I turned and looked at Lorenzo. The old Lorenzo would’ve slammed his glass down and thrown them out on the street. Not tonight. He leaned back in his chair, drunk-eyed, and waved a lazy hand. “All right, all right. Cut it out.” Light. Casual. I spoke up. “Lorenzo. You’re really going to let them talk about me like that?” He frowned. His voice got irritated. “They’re wasted. Their mouths are running. You gonna get into it with a bunch of kids?” I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. Bianca walked over with a glass of wine. “Ma’am, let me toast you. I owe you an apology. I was young and stupid, and I hurt you.” She bent forward. Her wrist tipped. A full glass of red poured straight down the front of my white blouse. “Oh no! I’m so sorry!” The wine ran down my chest. The white silk soaked through and stuck to my skin. My bra was showing through, every line of it. A couple of the guys snickered. Elbowed each other. The corner of Bianca’s mouth curled up. I stood up and slapped her across the face with everything I had. Crack. The whole room went dead silent. Lorenzo shot to his feet. “Aria! What the hell are you doing?!” He caught himself. Cleared his throat and dialed it down. “You don’t hit people. I don’t care what happened, you don’t put hands on someone.” I stared straight at him. “I’m drunk too.” Bianca cupped her cheek. Tears rolled. Little hiccup-sobs. “I know she’s angry with me. I don’t blame her…” Every single one of them rushed to comfort her. Nobody looked at me. I turned and went upstairs. Their voices followed me. “Don’t cry, Bianca. Hitting people is never okay.” “Get her some ice. Her cheek’s swelling.” “She really is bad luck, that Aria. Ruining everyone’s night.” I shut the bedroom door behind me. I’d put every ounce of me into that slap. My palm was still buzzing. Another sleepless night. My head pounded till sunrise. At dawn, I slipped out to buy something for the pain. I hadn’t taken ten steps past the front gate when a black SUV screeched up in front of me. Someone threw a hood over my head and dragged me into the back.

I came to through a haze, my head pounding. Rust everywhere. Rusted walls. The smell of rust. Rust on my tongue. Ropes around my wrists and ankles. I couldn’t move. Bianca walked up and stood over me. Arms crossed. Looking down at me. “Bitch. You had the nerve to slap me?” Her voice was pure venom. “Lorenzo broke both my legs for you. I spent months in that hospital bed thinking about exactly how I was going to grind you into dust.” She crouched down and put her face right up against mine. “But you know what… I should thank you.” “You’re such a cold fish, you couldn’t even keep him satisfied in bed.” She laughed. “After he had me, he couldn’t stand to send me away. He hid me. Came to me every day. He’s crazy about me now.” I stared her dead in the eye. “If you’ve got the guts, kill me.” She stood up and smirked. “Kill you? No. That’d be too easy. I want you to wish you were dead.” She stepped back and snapped her fingers. “Boys. Work her over. Don’t stop until she can’t beg anymore.” The first fist landed in my stomach. I thrashed. Somebody grabbed the back of my head and slammed my face into the concrete. The punches came harder. My breath got smaller and smaller. Then two heavy slabs came down over me. Concrete. They actually covered me with concrete. Dark. Total dark. Panic flooded in from every side and swallowed me whole. I was eighteen again, buried under a collapsed building, my mother’s blood dripping onto my forehead. I was right back there. I started screaming. “Let me out! Let me out!” “Don’t lock me in here!” “I can’t — I can’t breathe —” I don’t know how long I screamed. My throat went raw. Then nothing came out at all. Then — I heard him. Lorenzo’s voice. Somewhere above me. I pulled every last piece of air out of my lungs. “Lorenzo! Lorenzo, I’m here! Help me!” But my voice was gone. What came out was thinner than a breath. “Baby, don’t panic. She probably got upset and went out for a drive.” Lorenzo didn’t answer. Then Bianca again. “Honestly? She’s a black cloud. Look at your business since you two got engaged. Deal after deal falling apart. One after another.” Lorenzo was quiet for a long beat. Then, low: “Yeah. Sometimes I wonder if she really is bad luck.” Tears ran sideways off my face into the dust. I remembered every word he had ever said to me. He said, “Marrying you is the best thing that’ll ever happen to me.” He said, “Bad luck? People are full of shit. You’re my lucky charm, baby.” Now he was saying, “Yeah. Sometimes I wonder.” He had become one of them. He thought I was the jinx now too. Somewhere in the distance, a clock tower started chiming. One. Two. Three… Twelve. Past midnight. It was my birthday. Outside, fireworks exploded. Big ones. Boom after boom. Bianca squealed. “Lorenzo! You remembered I love fireworks!” Lorenzo laughed. “Little girl. Of course I remembered.” The fireworks went on for a solid half hour. Color after color, lighting up the whole sky. Through the crack in the slab, I caught tiny slivers of light. Red. Blue. Gold. On, off. On, off. My body was going numb. I thought about the first year I knew Lorenzo. My parents were still alive. He set off fireworks outside my window all night just to get me to say yes. He stood down on the street, tilting his head back, yelling up at me — “Aria! Just one look, baby, just look down once!” Back then, his eyes were full of me. Just me. Now his fireworks were for somebody else. Something warm ran between my legs. I closed my eyes. The world slid away.
