Chapter 1

Every girl in Hudson Port’s underworld knows the rule of the Choosing. The Don’s Heir releases his falcon, and the woman whose glove it lands on becomes his wife. One bird, one bride. Never two. In my last life, the falcon landed on my sister’s glove. Then it landed on mine. A falcon had never chosen two women. Not once. The whole lawn went dead silent. Nobody knew what to do. The Heir is Dante Carrano, future Don of the Carrano family. His bride will be its next Donna, the boss's wife. My sister Bianca was the first to step forward, looking every bit the picture of grace and mercy. "Sisters shouldn't fight over a man," she said. "I'll step aside and let Zoe take my place as the Heir's bride." So I became Dante's bride. But on my wedding day, my maid, Pia, dropped to her knees in front of everyone. "Miss Zoe dusted herself with lure powder to attract the falcon!" she cried. "She was jealous of Miss Bianca. She couldn’t stand the thought of losing to her!" I was innocent, and I couldn’t prove a thing. Bianca stepped in, wearing that same gentle smile. "Zoe, if you wanted the future Donna title so badly, you could've just asked. I would've given it to you. Why stoop to something so cheap?" Just like that, I was finished. From that day on, she became the woman the Heir could never have, while I became the dirt beneath her feet. Dante blamed me for ruining his chance to marry Bianca. Every day, he had white dresses delivered to my room. I wore them. I copied her hairstyles. I knelt in the family chapel and wrote out prayers, line after line, until my fingers cramped. "You wanted her place so badly," he told me. "So go ahead. Be her. And spend the rest of your life atoning for what you've done." The day I went into labor, Bianca was miles away, running a free clinic outside the city. But Dante pulled every doctor he'd assigned to my delivery and sent them to her clinic, just to help her put on a good show. I was left alone with the pain, bleeding through the sheets. Hours crawled by. By the time the door finally opened, I was barely clinging to life. A doctor, I thought. It was Bianca. She should’ve been miles away, at her clinic. She leaned over my bed. "Remember your maid?” she whispered. "I put her up to it. The lure powder, too. I had her plant it on you." I stared at her. I couldn't even scream. She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a murmur. "How else was I supposed to become the woman everyone adores? And marry the man I actually want?" I coughed up a mouthful of blood. It sprayed across the bed curtains. The room tilted. Everything went black. When I open my eyes, I’m back at the Falcon Choosing, on the Carrano estate lawn, under the same white tents. My hands are shaking inside my gloves. The falcon does exactly what it did in my last life. It lands on Bianca's glove. Then it lands on mine. The crowd erupts. "Two women? How is that even possible?" "Maybe even God can't decide between them!" Donna Isabella, the Don's wife and the most respected woman in the family, watches us in silence. Then my sister Bianca steps forward. White dress. White veil. A tiny red birthmark between her brows. Her face radiates the kind of gentle goodness that makes people want to believe every word she says. "Donna, sisters shouldn’t fight over a man," Bianca says softly. "I’m happy to step aside and let Zoe take my place." The crowd practically swoons. In the front row, my stepmother, Margherita, sits up straight, beaming at her real daughter. She leans toward the woman beside her. "My Bianca’s been this way since she was a baby. Always giving her sister whatever she wants." "What a generous heart." the woman replies. "Anyone can see your daughter was touched by an angel. She was born for greatness." Margherita practically glows at the praise. I lower my eyes and keep my mouth shut. Bianca was born with a red birthmark between her brows. People called it an angel's kiss, a sign that she was destined for great things. By the time she was three, she'd started imitating the Virgin Mary in the paintings. White dresses. White veils. A soft voice. That serene little smile, as if nothing in the world could ever upset her. When I was little, my grandmother gave me a pearl necklace. Bianca took one look at it and sighed. "Pearls are beautiful, Zoe. But wearing them every day can weigh down your soul." Then she offered to carry that burden for me. A week later, she was wearing my necklace. "A peaceful heart can be happy anywhere," she told me. "Even in a closet." So I was moved into the old storage room behind the kitchen, and my bedroom became her private prayer room. That's Bianca's way. She never comes right out and asks for what she wants. She drops a few sweet little hints, puts on that angelic face, and waits until you hand it over just to make her stop. And now she's doing it again. She doesn’t even want the Heir. But she’d never pass up a chance to be the star of the Choosing. She wants the reputation. She wants the man she actually loves. And she wants to keep the Heir hoping he still has a chance with her. So instead, she offers me up as the perfect solution. "Zoe!” Margherita snaps, dragging me out of my thoughts. "What are you standing there for? Say thank you to your sister for being so generous!" She marches over and grabs my shoulder, shoving me toward Bianca. I let her push me, then jerk my arm hard. A puff of fine powder shakes loose from my glove, right under my nose. "Achoo!" I sneeze three times, hard, my eyes watering as I clap a hand over my face. "Sorry, Mother. Something’s tickling my nose." Then I lower my hand and turn my wrist, as if I’ve only just noticed. A faint dusting of yellow powder clings to the cuff of my glove, sparkling in the sunlight. I stare at it. Then I look up, my voice trembling. "What is that?" For the first time, Bianca's perfect composure slips. Margherita goes white. "What are you talking about?" she hisses. I stumble back two steps, playing the frightened girl to the hilt. Then I raise my voice so everyone on the lawn can hear me. "Donna! I have no idea what this is. The falcon landed on my glove. Could this be why? Please, have someone test it right now, in front of everyone. I need to clear my name!" Donna Isabella raises a hand. The family’s head falconer steps forward. He rubs a pinch of the powder between his fingers, sniffs it, and his expression changes. "Donna, it’s lure powder." I gasp, letting my voice break. "I don't know who's trying to frame me. Thank goodness I noticed it. If I hadn't, I'd never have known!" Whispers ripple through the crowd. "Would she really expose the evidence herself if she were guilty?" "Looks more like someone planted it on her." Bianca's lashes flutter, but for once, she has nothing to say. Margherita panics. She rushes forward and grabs my arm. "Your sister is offering you the next Donna’s spot! Just thank her and drop it! Stop making a scene!" Before I can answer, engines purr at the edge of the lawn. A line of black limousines glides up the drive. “Dante’s here,” someone whispers.

Chapter 2

Dante Carrano strides onto the lawn. Dark suit. Collar slightly undone. A thin sheen of sweat at his temple. He must've rushed over. Donna Isabella blinks. "Dante? Weren't you in a meeting with your father?" Dante stops in front of his mother. "Mother, this is about my future wife. I couldn't sit still in that meeting. I was afraid someone might get in the way, so I had to see for myself." As he speaks, his gaze sweeps over my face. Donna Isabella smiles. "There was a little incident. We found powder on Zoe Rinaldi's glove, but she noticed it herself and asked us to test it. That says something about her honesty, doesn't it?" Dante looks me over, his eyes sharp and calculating. Then he lets out a laugh. "Mother, don't you think that's a little too convenient?" "It's like a thief shouting, 'Stop, thief!' She puts on a whole show, points out the powder herself, and walks away looking like the most honest person here. We're looking into this. All the way." The crowd starts buzzing. "Dante’s got a point." "Looks like she’s trying to play the angel, just like her sister." "Too bad she’s a terrible actress." I lower my eyes, digging my nails into my palm. In my last life, Dante was convinced I'd rigged the Choosing to steal Bianca's place as his bride. He hated me for it. On our wedding night, he had me moved to the guest wing. The next morning, white dresses appeared in my room. He ordered me to wear them. Then he had Bianca's little red birthmark painted between my brows. At first, I fought him. I tore the dresses to shreds. I smashed the makeup against the floor. He let me rage. The next morning, more dresses arrived. Right on schedule. He never had to threaten me. He never had to explain. I knew I had no choice. So I gave in. I wore the dresses. Learned her makeup. Copied her soft voice and the slow, graceful way she walked. And just like that, Dante started treating me better. He'd drop by my room now and then. Sit with me. Make small talk. Sometimes he'd even bring me pastries. I was stupid enough to think things had finally gotten better. Then came the day I went into labor. Outside my door, I heard the butler whisper, "Mr. Carrano, all the doctors are gone. What about your wife?" Dante's voice came through the door, cold and flat. "A fake is a fake. Put her in Bianca's dresses, paint on her birthmark, and she'll still never be Bianca." Dante paused. "Even this baby... I only wanted it because I pictured it as Bianca’s." "Bianca is out there treating the poor, and she needs every doctor I’ve got. Zoe can wait. Let her deal with it." I lay there, bleeding, and finally saw how pathetic I'd been. I'd spent so long trying to become the woman he wanted that I'd forgotten I was a person, too. I blink, and the memory fades. Sunlight. The lawn. Dante, standing right in front of me, as cold as he was that night. This time, I meet his gaze. "Dante's right. We should investigate." Dante freezes. "You... you actually want us to investigate?" Before I can answer, Bianca steps in with that soft, soothing voice of hers. "There’s no need to assume the worst. Maybe someone was careless while the gloves were being prepared, and some powder rubbed off on Zoe’s glove." "If we turn this into a full investigation, we’ll have to question everyone who touched them. Some innocent people could get caught up in it. They don’t deserve that." Dante turns to her, his expression instantly softening. "Bianca, you’re too good for this world. She cheated to take your place, and you’re still looking out for her." I watch the two of them and almost laugh. Of course. Bianca gets to play the angel, and Dante gets to play her devoted protector. Meanwhile, I’m supposed to stand here and take the fall. "I'd still like to know what happened," I say. "If I did it, I'll accept whatever punishment I deserve." Margherita lunges forward and grabs my arm. "Have you lost your mind? Your sister is trying to let this go! All you have to do is thank her and move on. Why won't you just shut up and let it end?" I gently pull my arm free. "I didn't do it. So why should we just sweep it under the rug?" Dante sneers. He clearly thinks I'm bluffing. "You really think I have no proof? That's cute. Bring me Zoe's maid!" A guard drags Pia onto the lawn. She stumbles, drops to her knees, and starts shaking. "It... it was Miss Zoe," she stammers. "She paid me a hundred thousand dollars to do it." Dante turns to me, one corner of his mouth lifting in a smug little smile. "Well? Anything to say for yourself?" "A hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money," I say evenly. "Every dollar that leaves the Rinaldi household gets logged. Even cash withdrawals leave a trail. Send someone to pull the bank records." "See if a hundred thousand went missing recently, and where it went. Then we’ll know who’s telling the truth." Dante's smile disappears. His eyes harden. "You just don’t know when to quit, do you? Fine! Someone go to the bank and pull the records!" "No!" Margherita's voice cracks across the lawn. Everyone falls silent. Pia starts shaking even harder. Her eyes dart toward Bianca again and again, like she's begging her to do something. I stand perfectly still. I'm not pretending to be calm. I am calm. And Donna Isabella can see it. So can everyone else. Then Bianca finally speaks. "There’s no need to check the records," she says quietly. "I’m the one who told Pia to do it."

Chapter 3

Dante stares at Bianca. "Bianca?" Bianca lets out a soft sigh, her gaze distant, as if none of this matters to her. "Being the Heir's wife has never meant much to me. Money, power, status... it's all temporary. I've never cared about any of it." Then she turns to me, her expression full of sisterly concern. "But Zoe has always been different. She's ambitious. She wants to be the best at everything. She's been looking forward to the Choosing for so long, praying day and night that the falcon would pick her." "I thought if it landed on her glove, she'd finally get the one thing she wanted most. I never meant for things to turn out this way." Dante listens, his shock slowly giving way to something softer, more complicated. "Bianca," he says, his voice thick with affection. "Why do you always have to sacrifice yourself for everyone else?" Then he turns to me, suddenly looking like a man burdened by guilt. "I was wrong about you, Zoe." Dante lifts his chin, as if he's about to do me some grand favor. "Since you're so devoted to me, I won't leave you with nothing. I'll take you as my mistress. Not my wife, of course, but you'll have all the status and privileges a mistress of mine could ask for." He pauses, looking almost pleased with himself. "Two sisters sharing one man. People will call it a love story." Margherita jabs me in the ribs with her elbow. "Thank him," she hisses. "Now." I just smile. "Bianca has it wrong." Every head turns toward me. "Yes, I've been looking forward to today. Every single day. But the man I was waiting for was never the Heir." Dante's expression shifts. "You..." Margherita stamps her foot. "You stupid girl! Do you even hear yourself?" I don't bother answering either of them. Instead, I turn to Donna Isabella. "I'd like to enter the second round with the other women who weren't chosen." One eyebrow lifts. Donna Isabella knows exactly what I'm asking for. The Choosing isn’t only for the Heir. After he picks, the rest of us move on to round two. Every young man in the Carrano family raises a bird of his own, and so do the men of allied families. Each man trains the bird his skill and temper can handle, so no two are alike: a falcon, a hawk, an owl, even an eagle. The rule is simple: The women line up on the stage. The men wait below, birds on their fists. When the birds are released, each one flies to the woman its owner is meant to marry. Donna Isabella studies me for a moment. "Are you sure about this? The Heir has just offered you a place at his side. If you enter the second round and no one chooses you, you'll walk away with nothing." Dante can't take it anymore. He strides across the lawn and stops right in front of me. "What the hell are you trying to prove?" he demands through clenched teeth. "I’ve already agreed to keep you. What more could you possibly want?" Then he lowers his voice so only I can hear him. "I know you've come back, too. I wronged you in our last life, and I know that. But Bianca spent her whole life alone for my sake." "She never married because she was waiting for me. I can't let her down again. So stop pushing this. Know when to quit." I look him in the eye and smile. "If you don't want to let my sister down, then marry her properly. What does any of that have to do with me?" I turn back to Donna Isabella. "I've made up my mind." Donna Isabella looks from Dante to me. She takes her time, letting the silence stretch. At last, she nods. "Very well. Everyone has the right to choose their own path. Bianca Rinaldi will be the Heir's bride. We'll take a short break before the second round begins." The crowd breaks into smaller groups, people talking as they move away. I head toward the staging tent to wait for my turn. I barely make it a few steps before Margherita catches up with me. Her hand flies up. SMACK! The slap cracks across my cheek.
